Jump!

The music video “Jump” by The Pointer Sisters have the same titles, but different

meanings of the song “Jump” by Kriss Kross. Although, the two songs "Jump" by The Pointer

Sisters which is a R&B song and the hip hop version by Kriss Kross. The song title is the same

but the meanings are totally different. The Pointer Sisters is a love song and the one by Kriss

Kross is a hip hop song.

The Pointer Sisters are an American R&B singing group from Oakland, California who

had a successful “mainstream” during the 1970’s and 1980’s. The Pointer Sisters have diverse

into many genres of music such as: “Pop, Disco, Electronic music, Bebop, Soul, Funk, Dance,

Country, and Rock”. The Pointer Sisters have won three Grammy Awards and have received

HollyWood’s Walk of Fame. In the first music video “Jump” by The Pointer Sisters it features

three African American women. The summer hit of 1984 “Jump” is an energetic love song which

features the Summer Olympics and the athletes doing there event in the music video. The events

that were done during the music video were: The high jump, long jump, and also the triple jump.

This particular song was a change for The Pointer Sisters because they were more of the group

that did Retro R&B in the 1970’s but there music producer asked them if they could change it up

a little bit and try doing a love song, the sisters agreed and when the song “Jump” came out by

the sisters it was upbeat and energetic for a love song. The song was also in a 2003 movie called

“Love Actually”. The main part of the song and my take on it by listening to the lyrics and

watching the music video is when they sing “you want more” is that they say “Jump” right after

that and it talks about if you want more in a relationship then you “Jump” for it. The appeal in

this music video relates to more of pathos because it talks about love and relationships and that

appeals to audiences emotions. The age range for this type of music video would be 16-30

because this song is for a more mature audience because it talks about relationships and the age

range that I picked is that, that is a great age range for relationships. The audience for this

particular song would be more of a mature audience because the whole takeaway on this song is

about jumping for love and relationships so it would appeal to more of a teenager and young

adult audience.

However, some may argue that there is footage of athletes doing their event from the

summer of the 1984 Olympics. Although, this may be true the footage that was used were clips

of the athletes doing the high jump, long jump and triple jump the reason they did that in there

music video is because the song is “Jump” and they thought it was a good idea to put some of the

jumping events in the video to signify the word “Jump”.

The duo “Kriss Kross” was an American Hip Hop duo that was formed in the early

1990’s the the duo consisted of Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly and Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith. The

rapping duo was discovered by “Jermaine Dupri” in 1991 and had a hit worldwide called “Jump”

which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and got double platinum as a single. In my

second music video it featured two young boys rapping. The duo was only thirteen when they

started until they got discovered by eighteen year old “Jermaine Dupri” in the Atlanta mall. In

the music video the duo did a fashion style which included wearing their clothes on backwards.

The song was also in a 2011 movie called “Friends with Benefits”. The duo was together from
Salyers 3

1990-2003 because Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly died from a drug overdose and that left Chris

“Daddy Mac” Smith without his partner in crime. Since the death of Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly,

Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith has launched his own website to showcase his paintings and also to

cover his passions including music, design and film. The video stars the two boys “Mac Daddy”

and “Daddy Mac” and a bouncing hydraulics car jumping to the beat and the two boys rapping

and then you hear the main chorus “Jump, Jump” everyone jumps. The main part of the song and

my takeaway on it just by listening to the lyrics and watching the music video is that when the

young duo says “Jump” everyone around jumps. One appeal would be pathos because the appeal

in the music video engages the music listener when they watch the lyrics and it also engages the

audience in the music video because the duo is younger so therefore a younger audience will be

more engaged rather than an older audience. The age range for this particular song would be 13-

20 because this song is for teenagers and young adults.

However, some people can interpret it differently than what I have interpreted it.

Everyone has a different opinion, no one has the interpretation as you. Some people can interpret

that “Jump” by Kriss Kross was the best hit in the 1990’s. Although, if that being true then all

the songs that came out in the 1990’s would be the best hit because all artists think that they have

the newest hit when it comes out.

In conclusion, even though the songs have the same song title, they do not have the same

meaning. One of the versions of the song “Jump” is an energetic love song while the other

version of the song “Jump” is a Hip Hop song. In one music video it talks about jumping for love

and the other music video talks about how the duo Kriss Kross makes you jump.
