A RESEARCH PAPER OF PLAGIARISM

ABSTRACT

Plagiarism is labeled as an “academic dishonesty” but how odes plagiarism takes

place up to what extent a material can be considered as plagiarized or not. It brings

a lot of confusion to people without knowing that they are now copying the work of

other people. This study aims to inform and be an instrument to guide students to get

back to the ethical norms and prevent them to have further problems. This study also

aims to understand the factors that lead the students to commit plagiarism; they

might plagiarize due to having difficulties in the language use, pressured on the time

and lack of knowledge about plagiarism.

Students who believe that plagiarism is not a serious case and those who think that

other students plagiarize frequently increase their eagerness and confidence to

commit such dishonesty. This research focused over the full range of types of

plagiarism, from using another author’s ideas and thought to submitting an entire

document copied verbatim from another author’s work.

A RESEARCH PAPER OF PLAGIARISM

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

I. Introduction

The issue of plagiarism is common to everyone it is not new especially in the field

of academics. Most of the students are committing plagiarism because of lack of

knowledge, well even professional and famous personalities and even in music

industry are having problem because of plagiarism.

Senator Tito Sotto was also accused of plagiarism twice. During his speech about

contraceptives he did not expect that some part of his speech is from the American

blogger. A UP students was also charge of plagiarism when he enters a photography

contest and submitted not his own work.

Plagiarism is a serious offence now almost everyone is committing mistakes and

underestimating the weight of this problem.

The Revised Penal Code of the Philippines or any special law does not consider

plagiarism a crime, except Section 33(b) of the Electronic Commerce Act.

A RESEARCH PAPER OF PLAGIARISM

Use of copyright material without attrition is a criminal offense. Plagiarism is not a

crime but is disapproved more on the ground of moral offense. Plagiarism is

considered academic dishonesty and a breach of journalistic ethics, subject to

sanctions like expulsion and other severe career damage. (From Wikipedia.)

Nowadays, there have been countless attempts to detect plagiarism and to punish

plagiarists and give sanctions through following specific ethical rules in higher

education institutions. There are soft wares that can detect plagiarism, but, since it

is quite expensive, not all the universities can afford purchasing it.

In addition, these rules and regulations which aim to discourage the attempt to

plagiarize other people’s work, particularly, the invention of technological

plagiarism detection tools can be truly beneficial and helpful if used by instructors

and institutions effectively and spontaneously (Beasley, 2004).

II. DISCUSSION

How do we define plagiarism? Where does plagiarism originate? What are the

reason of students or even professional in committing plagiarism?

A. Definition and Origin

In dictionary plagiarism, which means “literary theft”, is explained as coming from

the English word “plagiary” which means one who wrongfully takes another’s words

or ideas.

Plagiarizing someone’s work is considered stealing from them. According to

Academic world, especially considers plagiarism a grave crime. While it is alright

to take information from a number of sources. It is also important to cite those

sources and give credit where it’s due.

Sometimes, however, two similar ideas can end up sounding the same. Often two

writers will have the same tone in their writing. This means that many people may

be wrongly accused of plagiarism. This can destroy careers, reputations and can even

end with legal difficulties.

A RESEARCH PAPER OF PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism has become a world-wide problem and is increasing day by day. This

problem is increasing further mainly because of the increase in the number of online

publications. Using Plagiarism detection technique, we can compare the given

document with the target/original document. Plagiarism is borrowed from the Latin

Language, meaning "to Kidnap". ( Dr. Steve Organ)

According to the Merriam Webster Online Dictionary, plagiarism means;

 To snitch and pass off the words and ideas of another as one's own idea.

 Use another's work without crediting the source.

 To commit classical or scholarly theft.

 Present as new or original idea or product derived from an existing source.

 Colnerud & Rosander (2009): “Using parts, or the whole, of a text written by

another person without acknowledgement; submitting the same paper or parts

of it, for credit in more than one course, falsification of information.” p. 506

 Hard, Conway, & Moran (2006): “Presenting, as one's own, the ideas or words

of another person or persons for academic evaluation without proper

acknowledgement.” p. 1059

 Park (2003): “Plagiarism involves literary theft, stealing (by copying) the

words or ideas of someone else and passing them off as one’s own without

crediting the source.” p. 472

 Wang (2008): “Using somebody else’s work (words and thoughts) without

attribution.” p. 743

 Williams, Nathanson, & Paulhus (2010): “Any nonzero percentage detected

definitions of plagiarism is the act of using another author’s work without

citation, thus portraying it as one’s own work. Other common elements of

definitions include descriptions of the length of the copied text, whether taking

solely ideas from other authors is plagiarism, and the extent that the copied words

were taken verbatim. For the present study, a definition of plagiarism was

developed that addressed these elements: Plagiarism is representing another

author’s ideas or words as your own in course documents or electronic postings.

This would include submitting an entire document by another author as well as using

a portion of text or ideas from another author’s work and not citing the source.

While researching for an important personality that can explain plagiarism more we

found Dr. Steve Ogan.

Dr. Steve Ogan gave the root of plagiarism. According to him “the root causes of

plagiarism is not acceptable to unbelievers, meaning it should even be more so with

believers. Unfortunately, both believers and unbelievers are involved in plagiarism.

Plagiarism is a heart problem. According to the bible Jeremiah 17:9 says “The heart

is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it? I, the Lord,

search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and

according to the fruit of his doing”.

B. Reasons Why Students Plagiarize.

Students may or may not be aware that they are committing plagiarism. The open

opportunity and availability of internet that temp students to lift word, phrase, ideas

or paragraph and pasting it without thinking. But there will be no excuse that will

lessen the unethical behavior of students.

According to the research of Kent State University and Middle Georgia University

here are the list of reason why students plagiarize.

 Students may fear failure or fear taking risks in their own work.

 Students may have poor time-management skills or they may plan poorly for

the time and effort required for research-based writing, and believe they have

no choice but to plagiarize.

 Students may view the course, the assignment, the conventions of academic

documentation, or the consequences of cheating as unimportant.

 Teachers may present students with assignments so generic or

unparticularized that students may believe they are justified in looking for

canned responses.

 Instructors and institutions may fail to report cheating when it does occur, or

may not enforce appropriate penalties.

A RESEARCH PAPER OF PLAGIARISM

 Students may not know how to integrate the ideas of others and document the

sources of those ideas appropriately in their texts.

 Students will make mistakes as they learn how to integrate others' words or

ideas into their own work because error is a natural part of learning.

 Students may not know how to take careful and fully documented notes during

their research.

 Academicians and scholars may define plagiarism differently or more

stringently than have instructors or administrators in students' earlier

education or in other writing situations.

 College instructors may assume that students have already learned appropriate

academic conventions of research and documentation.

 College instructors may not support students as they attempt to learn how to

research and document sources; instead, instructors may assign writing that

requires research and expect its appropriate documentation, yet fail to

appreciate the difficulty of novice academic writers to execute these tasks

successfully.

 Students from other cultures may not be familiar with the conventions

governing attribution and plagiarism in American colleges and universities.

A RESEARCH PAPER OF PLAGIARISM

 In some settings, using other people's words or ideas as their own is an

acceptable practice for writers of certain kinds of texts (for example,

organizational documents), making the concepts of plagiarism and

documentation less clear cut than academics often acknowledge and thereby

confusing students who have not learned that the conventions of source

attribution vary in different contexts.

 Confusion between plagiarism and paraphrasing

 Confusion about terminology

 Careless notetaking

 Perception of online information as public knowledge

 Misconception of common knowledge

 Student ethics and relationship with the College

 Pressure from family, competition for scholarships and jobs

 Poor time management and organizational skills

 Lazy

 Student Panics

Conclusion

The reason why students plagiarize is because sometimes they do not have self-

confident and their self-esteem is low. They are not proud of their works. According

to the survey the causes to plagiarize are many things to do. They had a difficulty in

balancing their time or they are helpless so they look for an easy solution of their

problem. Even though plagiarist is usually plagued by sins such as, lying, cheating,

stealing, covetousness, laziness.

This is a problem in education which deals with the integrity of an individual. It may

connote dishonesty and intellectual theft, but, teachers and professors as well as
A RESEARCH PAPER OF PLAGIARISM

those who are in the higher positions should not forget that students are still in the

process of becoming the best possible version of themselves.

They may fall this time, but, as educators, it is their sole responsibility to motivate

the students to rise again and start anew amidst this mistake. Students are still works

in progress. They still have a lot of things to learn. It does not literally mean that the

teacher is tolerating the students, but, it is called tough love. Disciplining and caring

for them at the same time. Once they were guilty of plagiarizing, they must be

punished, but, also be given another chance to correct their mistakes. Everybody

deserves a second chance.
