Dear Nurse Residency Program Coordinator,

I am writing this letter to express my genuine interest in obtaining a position in the Nurse Residency Program
at Mayo Clinic for the February 2020 Cohort. I believe that this opportunity is one that truly embodies my
interests and my plans to transition into the professional role of a nurse. My extensive clinical background,
commitment to extraordinary patient care, and aptitude for learning would make for a valuable contribution
to your team.

This past summer, I had the privilege of completing the Student Nurse Externship at Mayo Clinic. I spent
eight influential weeks working night shifts on 3-West, the organ transplant and intermediate care unit.
During my time at Mayo Clinic, I gained not only imperative clinical knowledge and skills, but have also
gained a true appreciation and understanding of Mayo Clinic’s primary value, “the needs of the patient come
first”. I have always had great admiration for the compassion and dedication shown by the staff, as my father
has been a patient at Mayo previously. It was an honor to be able to take part in providing the very care that
the staff at this location are renowned for. Caring for transplant and intermediate patients has piqued my
interest and passion. I feel I was able to successfully adapt to organizing patient care on this unique and ever-
changing unit with the strong support I received from every staff member. I feel comfortable and confident in
my ability to conduct thorough head-to-toe assessments, recognize critical changes in patient status,
implement individualized interventions, and integrate my skill set as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

I am a new graduate registered nurse from the University of Arizona’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Program. As my enclosed resume indicates, I have a considerable clinical background, with experience in
several specialties of nursing. Most recently, I have completed my senior preceptorship working at Banner
University Medical Center in Tucson on the gynecologic oncology unit. Through this experience, this
experience allowed me to further enhance my skills, develop of therapeutic relationships, and improve health
outcomes of a vulnerable patient population.

I believe that I possess the qualities that Mayo Clinic is looking for in a new graduate nurse. I work and
communicate effectively on all levels; recognizing the importance of teamwork on the delivery of seamless
patient care. I readily take on leadership roles, but am not afraid to ask for help when needed. These qualities
will lead to a smooth transition into the world of professional nursing.
