ARTS OF VISAYAS

The Visayas is an island group in the Philippines, sub-divided into three non-administrative regions; Central, Eastern and
Western

HISTORICAL EVENT IN VISAYAS


The Visayas was first visited by the Europeans in 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan landed in the Philippines. The

The Visayan islands is where we see the strong Influence of the Spanish culture in the songs, dances, food,
textiles, attires, religious festivals and the architecture.
The Visayans Speak in different languages including Cebuano (the largest group), Ilonngo (Hiligaynon), Akeanon,
Waray-waray and Leyte.

ART ELEMENTS, PRINCIPLES, PROCESSES OF VISAYAS


 Curvilinear lines – Curved lines used in embroidery designs
 Geometric Shapes – Geometrical designs used in their mat weaving
 Natural Dyes - dyes from seeds, fruits and bark of trees used to dye mats and fabrics
 Repetition - when a line or color or shape/design is repeated in a mat or fabric.
 Contrast - - when a light color is woven beside a dark color or when a thin line or shape is placed beside a thick
line or shape to provide contrast.
 Weaving - the handmade craft of using warp and weft strips or string to create a fabric or mat.

FOLK ARTS OF WESTERN VISAYAS


-Panay Island is one of the largest island of the archipelago.
- This triangular island is composed of provinces of Iloilo, Antique,
Aklan, Capiz, and the island of Guimaras.
- The name of Panay island was given by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi when his team moved there
after experiencing food scarcity in Cebu. Panay literally means "there is food" in Spanish.
-Weaving is the primary form of arts and crafts in Panay island.

ILOILO
-In Iloilo, weaving Patadyong is an important industry.

Patadyong is a wrap-around piece of cloth worn by women. This type


of clothing is often colorful and features liner and geometric designs.

- Dinagyang Festival is a religious and cultural festival in Iloilo City, Philippines held on the fourth
Sunday of January, or right after the Sinulog In Cebu and the Ati-Atihan in Aklan.

-Dinagyang Festival is held both to honor the Santo Niño and to celebrate the arrival on Panay of Malay
settlers and the subsequent selling of the island to them by the Atis.
AKLAN
- It is the oldest province in the Philippines. Aklan is famous for Boracay.
-Aklan is known for weaving cloth made from pinya fibers.

ANTIQUE

-Binirayan festival was celebrated in Antique.

-"Binirayan" literally means "where they sailed to". It


commemorates the legend of the arrival of the ten Bornean datus
on the island of Aninipay now known as Panay.

CAPIZ

-Capiz is known for the Placuna placenta oyster shell that has
the same name locally and is used for decoration, and for
making lampshades, trays, window doors. (Capiz Shell)

GUIMARAS

-The Manggahan Festival is the Guimaras' largest event celebrated


yearly where variety of mangoes produced are also best for making
dried mangoes, jam and other delicacies.

NEGROS ISLAND

-In the pre-hispanic times, the island of Negros is called Buglas


named after the type of sugar cane that grows abundantly in the
island.
- Negros is an island of so many festivals one of which is the famous
and the most spectacular display of colors and beauty of Negrenses.
-Its capital is Bacolod City and it is Known as the "Sugarbowl of the
Philippines", Negros Occidental produces more than half the
nation's sugar output.

Masskara Festival - is a festival held each year in Bacolod,


Philippines, every third weekend of October nearest October 19, the
city's Charter anniversary.
