Marine Conservation Through Music

Overview:
There are many ways in which people learn, in some cases, people increase their learning by
participating in hands on activities. In my display board, I will be allowing people to press
buttons in order to hear fun melodies along with quotes that contain facts about marine
conservation. To achieve this, the participant will grab onto the anchor which is the home base,
and then they will press the buttons located on the poster in order to achieve a sound response.
The overall purpose of this display board is to raise awareness for marine conservation all while
allowing people to have fun while learning. Not only does this allow for increased knowledge
about marine life, but also engages the participant to learn about music without knowing any
actual notation. By experiencing the two together, the participant will have a stronger knowledge
of music and marine life conservation.
Technologies Used:
● Makey Makey ​https://makeymakey.com/​ This is a receiver that acts as a medium
between electrical impulses from one end of the controlor, through the other end and is
relayed through the computer on a coding program to create sounds.
● Scratch ​https://scratch.mit.edu/​ This is a coding website which allows for the use of
melodic notation to be translated into codes, and other sounds can be turned into codes,
which when the makey makey is plugged into the computer, the information that is being
passed from the board will be relayed into sound coming from the computer
● Soundtrap ​https://www.soundtrap.com/​ I used soundtrap.com to make a melodic
notation, which was translated into a midi file, and imported to Scratch.com to create a
code for the melodic notation
Participants will learn:
● To interact with a display board in order to produce the sounds and quotes
● Information about marine life to promote the conservation of marine life
● To combine the information they’ve learned with the fun melodic lines to create a better
understanding, awareness, and appreciation of marine life and its conservation
Design Plan:
● Dec 1: finish cutting and glueing the materials onto the board
● Dec 2: Write out title, and start putting in the buttons on the board
● Dec 3: make the melodies in soundtrap and then put them into scratch and record the
quotes that I was to include in scratch
● Dec 4: add any final touches and double check to make sure everything works including
the earth
