Cooperative Learning

1. Standards
• INTASC Standard: The teacher works with others to create environments that support
individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction,
active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
• INTASC Standard: The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies
to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their
connections, and to build skills that apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
• Objective 1. Students will be able to explain the importance of cooperative learning in
the classroom.
• Objective 2. Students will be able to divide a classroom into pairs using a mock roster of
ten students for a cooperative learning lesson and then, discuss reasons for grouping
students with diverse characteristics and abilities.
• Auditory: I will be giving a group lecture while discussing lesson and asking several
questions. Visual: While showing a PowerPoint presentation, I will also feature two
videos. Kinesthetic: Students will form groups to complete an activity.
2. Materials
• PowerPoint, YouTube video of being a team, YouTube video on cooperative
learning, notecards, written classroom scenario, True/False questionnaire.
3. Instruction – Learning Process
a) Introduction: Personal introduction and short YouTube video of IT team.
b) Mini-lesson: Show PowerPoint presentation.
1. Define cooperative learning. 2. Show cooperative learning YouTube video and talk
about some highlights such as breaking from boring lectures, student centered learning,
career readiness, and the idea that we are smarter together as a group. 3. Review the
difference between heterogeneous and homogenous and discuss effective ways to group
students. 4. Discuss key elements from Parkay and Dr. Kagan. 5. Review the benefits of
cooperative learning.
c) Practice: Divide class into groups of 4-5. Hand out mock classroom list and layout.
Have each group divide students with diverse races, genders, and performance levels into
five teams.
d) Exit Slip: Slide 8, True and False questions that assesses the lesson. Conclusion slide.

5. Reflection: After taking the research and trying to narrow it all down for the lesson, I felt
that I left out some specific pieces of evidence that might prove the importance of
cooperative learning. I attempted to highlight each important aspect so students will
remember how to group children as well as why cooperative learning needs to be
implemented. My hope was to encourage them to learn more strategies through experts
and online examples of successful learning situations. By showing the benefits and
describing some learning outcomes, future teachers should be excited to apply this
knowledge to each classroom without hesitation. The video I found describes some great
details of the lesson and by discussing some key points, students should be able to
understand how to implement these structures with practice and by careful observation of
ways they can improve.
Cooperative Learning Assessment

True or False?

1. Utilizing a cooperative lesson can help accelerate

academic achievement.

2. Cooperative lessons are required in each classroom.

3. Heterogeneous grouping is a group of diverse students

placed in the same learning group.

4. One of the key elements in cooperative learning is that

the groups are small, such as 4-6 students per group.

5. It is acceptable for members of the group to slack off

because there are other students who will make up the

difference.
