FRICTION

1. During a Morse test on a 4-cylinder engine, the following results were obtained:
Brake power of all cylinders operating 51.9 kW
Brake power with cylinder no. 4 cut-off 36.8 kW
Brake power with cylinder no. 1 cut-off 37.1 kW
Brake power with cylinder no. 2 cut-off 36.9 kW
Brake power with cylinder no. 3 cut-off 37.0 kW

Calculate the following:

The total frictional losses

The indicated power when all cylinders are operating.

2. A 4-stroke, 3-liter diesel engine runs at 2000 RPM, and delivers 100 kW of brake power and
consumes 280 grams of fuel per hour per brake kW. The rate of fuel consumption at no load is 5.6
kg/hour. Find:

* The mechanical efficiency when the brake power is 25 kW

* The brake mean effective pressure for a mechanical efficiency of 0.70
* Frictional mean effective pressure ( kPa)
* Brake specific fuel consumption when the indicated power is 85 kW
3. A 4-stroke, 6-liter diesel engine runs at 1500 RPM, and delivers 200 kW of brake power and
consumes 350 grams of fuel per hour per brake kW. The rate of fuel consumption is 42 kg/hour at 100
kW of brake power. Calculate:

* Frictional mean effective pressure ( kPa)

* Indicated specific fuel consumption when the brake power is 150 kW
* The brake power when the mechanical efficiency is 0.20
* The indicated mean effective pressure when the brake power is 80 kW
4.A 4-stroke diesel engine has a displacement volume of 7.5 liters. The engine is operated during a
Willans' line test. The crankshaft rotates at 1500 rpm. The rate of zero-load fuel consumption is 8
kg/hour. The frictional losses are 20 kW. Determine:
- The equation of the Willans' line
- The brake specific fuel consumption when the indicated power is 170 kW
- The indicated specific fuel consumption when the rate of fuel consumption is 30 kg/hour
- The mechanical efficiency when the indicated mean effective pressure is 500 kPa
