Problem Statement: Design a G+7 Story Building with following condition.
Height of First Story =4m
Height of remaining Story = 3m
Dead Load 3.5 KN/m2 (Floors) 2.5KN/m2 (Roof)
Live Load 3KN /m2 (Floors) 1.5Kn/m2 (Roof)

1. Go to File -> New model.

2. Change the Initialization options to Indian Standard as shown below.Then Click Ok.

3. Change the grid spacing and story data as per problem as shown below.

4. Add structural Objects provides the option for different template.


Select Grid only (In our case) and click OK

5. Now for defining material properties,
Go to DefineMaterial
Now in the Define Material window, click on Add New Material and provide the concrete
properties conforming to Indian Standard.
Change the region->India, material type-> concrete, standard->Indian, grade->M30.
Click Ok

6. Click Ok and a new window will be displayed as shown below.


One can the change the material weight and mechanical properties.
We are going to restrict our self to default properties, so click Ok.

7. Similarly add the material property for reinforcements bars
(here HYSD Grade 415 )
Change the region->India, material type->Rebar, standard->Indian, grade->HYSD 415.
Click Ok

8. Also add the material property for wall( here Masonry )

9. Go to DefineSection PropertiesFrame section
In Frame Property window, select the option of Add New Property
In Frame Property Shape type window, select Section shape as Concrete Rectangular

10. Now give the section name as B250*150 (generally dimensions are in mm).
And the same values are entered in the Section Dimensions box in mm.
That is Depth = 250mm and Width = 150mm.
Then select the option of Modify/Show rebar

11. Change the Design type as M3 Design only Beam.
Longitudinal and confinement bars as HYSD415
Covers as 40 mm. Click OK.

12. B250x150 will be added to the list .


Select B250x150 and select the option of Add copy of property.

13. Change the property name as B300 x 250 and also the section dimensions depth
and width as 300 and 250 mm respectively.
Remaining property will remain same as B250 x 150 (material and Rebar property)

14. Add more number of beams by repeating step no.12 and 13 by increasing the beam
dimensions, so that we check the design for most efficient section at last.

15. For adding the columns,
In Frame Property window, select the option of Add New Property
In Frame Property Shape type window, select Section shape as Concrete Rectangular.
Now give the section name as c300x300 (generally dimensions are in mm).
That is Depth = 300mm and Width = 300mm, Material as M30.
Then select the option of Modify/Show rebar

16. Change the Design type as P-M2-M3 Design, Longitudinal and confinement bars as HYSD415
Cover as 40 mm and reinforcement details as shown below.
Select Reinforcement to be designed under Check/Design.

17. Select C300x300 and select the option of Add copy of property.
Add more number of columns (C450 x 450, C500x 500, C700 x 700) by repeating step no.12
and 13 by increasing the column dimensions.
We can change the grade of concrete also.
Now we should see all the beams and column sections in Frame Properties window.

18. Select Add New property in Frame Properties Window and select the Auto Select List

19. Change Property Name as Auto Beam
Change Auto Select Design Type as Column
Select all the beam properties and select the option of Add to add them in Auto select List.
Select the option of Modify in Starting Section

20. In the Auto Select Start Section window select the section with least cross section
( Here B250 x150) and click Ok.

21. Similarly create an auto list for column ( Auto Column) by repeating the step
number 19 & 20.

22. Go to Define Sections Properties Slab Section. Select Add New Property
Change the Property Name to Slab150
Slab Material to M25
Modeling Type as Shell-Thin
Type as Slab
Thickness to 150 mm and Click Ok.

23. Go to Define Sections Properties Wall Section.
Select Add New Property
Change the Property Name to Wall 230
Wall Material to Masonry
Modeling Type as Shell-Thin
Thickness to 230 mm and Click Ok.

24. Select the option of Similar Stories at the right bottom corner taskbar.
This option enables one to edit different stories at same time.

25. Go to Draw Draw Beams/Column/Brace Quick Draw Columns

26. Change the Property as Auto Column in Properties of Object.


In the Plain View , click and drag and columns will be placed at the grid intersection.

27. Go to Draw Draw Beams/Column/Brace Quick Draw Beams/Columns.
Change the property to Auto Beam in Properties of Objects window.

28. Go to Draw Floor/Wall ObjectsQuick Draw Floor/Wall Objects


Change the property to Slab 150 in Properties of Objects window.

29. Select the Set Display Options.
In the Set View Options Mark the Extrude frames, Extrude Shells and Apply to all Windows.

30. Click on the Select Object on top left corner and select all the slabs on Plan View window as
shown below.

31. Next step is to assign the loads.
Go to Assign Shell LoadsUniform.
Select Load Pattern Name as Dead.
Provide Load = 3.5 KN/m2 and click Apply.

32. Go to SelectGet Previous Selection


Select Load Pattern Name as Live.
Provide Load = 3 KN/m2 and click Apply.

33. Now Go to Define-> Load Patterns.
Define the Load as Cladding
Type as Super Dead
Self-weight multiplier as 0 and click Add new Load.

34. Go to DrawAuto Cladding Option


and select the option of Use Floors .Click ok

35. Select the perimeter beams of all the stories and go to Assign Frame Load.
Select Load Pattern Name as Cladding. Uniform Load as 0.8 KN/m

36. Now Go to Define-> Load Patterns.


Define the load as EQx
Type as Seismic
Self-weight multiplier as 0
Auto lateral load pattern select IS 1893 2002 option. Click OK.

37. Select the defined Seismic load and click on Modify Lateral Load.
Provide the parameters required for seismic load calculation.

38. Now before we run analysis Define load combinations from


Define->Load Combination-> Add Default Design Combo. Choose appropriate design here
Concrete Design. You can define your own load combination by Clicking New combo and
provide the scale factor and load case accordingly.

39. Now we need to analyze our Model. Go to Analyze ->Run Analysis.
Click Run Now and Save your model
In model explorer select the type of display you want see in 3D View.

40. Right click on any frame element to see SFD and BMD. These values Max SFD and Max BMD are
used in designing of frames.

41. Go to DisplayStory Response Plot.
Display Type as Max Story Displ
Design Comb as DCon1.
A graph plotting the displacement of different story will be displayed as shown.

42. Change the Display Type as Auto Lateral Loads to stories.


Load Pattern as Seismic.
A plot of Seismic forces acting on different stories will be shown.

43. Now we need to check our design,
Go to Design Concrete Design ->Start Design/ Check.
A message will be displayed as shown below. Click yes to reiterate the analysis and design
automatically using higher cross section defined earlier.

44. The following message will be shown again. Keep iterating the analysis and design till you get a
safe output.

45. Go to Design Concrete Frame DesignDisplay Design Result
Select the Design Input as Design sections.

46. The design sections will be shown as below.


The varied design section of column and beam along height can be observed.
The analysis results shown are efficient and economical.

47. Right Click on any frame to see the design information.
Click on summary.

48. The detailed information about concrete design of a particular frame will be dispalyed as
shown.

49. Go to DetailingStart Detailing.
In windows explorer go to Reinforcement Cage View and select the column or Beam property
to view 3D Rendered View of reinforcement detailing.

50. In Model Explorer go to Reports. Double click on Project report or Summary Report to
generate the required report.

Food for thought:
 Problem Statement: Design the following building which is subjected to the below loading.
All members should pass the design check and the design should be feasible in practical

Note: Secondary beam don’t have any column present to support them .This model have column only
on the perimeter and are shown in the diagram using thickened black in Top view.
