Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event:
1. Number Talks. Subitizing
Invite students to do a quick number talk by looking at a set of dots. Explain that they
will only briefly see a set of dots and will then be asked to share how many dots they
saw. Then they will explain how they saw the pattern of dots and figured out the total
number. Engage the students in a class discussion about how many dots they saw and the
patterns in which they saw them.
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:
1. Mini lesson: Introduce the number for the day and have the students write the number
8 in the air while saying the short poem.
“Make an s, but do not
stop. Go back up, it’s an
eight at the top.”
2. Have the students sit around a circle and distribute the Math tool kit to students.
“Show me 8 popsicle sticks”
“Show me 8 counter chips”
“Show me 8 cubes”
3. After the students return the math tool kit. Have them stand up:
“Jump 8 times”
“Clap 8 times”
“Give your partners 8 high fives”
4. Complete the content chart for the number 8.
5. Give the students index cards and have them draw 8 dots, the number 8 and the
number word eight.
6. Review the previous number cards made.

Small Group extension:

Show students a ten frame.
“How many counters fit on this frame?”
“Are you sure? now try it and see”
“Does that surprise you, does it make sense?” Some students may need to touch
and count each box.

Have students rotate their ten frames to a vertical display, then horizontal display.
“How many dots do you see? How do you know”
Remove the 5 counter chips and display a horizontal ten frame showing 5, with dots
filling the top row.
“How many dots do you see? How do you know”
What do you notice about the top row?, bottom row”
How could you check to be sure it is 5?
Repeat the activity adding one counter chips at a time to show 6, 7 and 8.

Station Activities:
Teacher will remind the students of rules and procedures in the station.
Teacher table: Numeracy Progression
Bump it Game
Counting Collections

Assessment:
During the activities, informally assess students’ abilities and assist students that need
help.
