Etiquettte in Prescription

1. Definition of Etiquette

Etiquette in prescription is a paper that contains information about how to use the
medicine in one day (Prayoga, 2017). Usually etiquette is given by the pharmacist or
medical personal who work in drugstore. The function of etiquette is to give information
about time of using and dosage of medicine. Giving etiquette to patients it is expected
that patients can use the medicine appropriately, so that will give optimal efect. Besides
that giving the etiquette to patients can reduce the risk medicine abuse.

Etiquette has a vital function as a source of information for patients in drug use.
Patients have different character and ability to remember. If in a condition where the
patient does not have good ability in understanding or remembering how to use the drug
delivered by the pharmacist, information can be obtained on etiquette. for example, just
writing 3 times a day without any other information, then the patient might be wrong in
taking the medicine. Such cases occur in the use of antibiotics such as Amoxicillin which
must be taken 3 times a day and spent. If the etiquette is written incomplete, then maybe
the patient thinks if he is cured of his illness he will not continue treatment. Even though
we all know that antibiotic drugs have the potential to experience bacterial resistance if
used under the dosage / underdose or not according to the intended dosage. For this
reason, etiquette is very important for pharmacists to write complete etiquette to avoid
medication errors.

2. Type and function etiquette in prescription

In prescription etiquette is divided into two type, there is white etiquette and blue
etiquette (Prayoga, 2017). White etiquettte used for internal medicine and blue etiquette
used for external medicine. Internal medicine enter to disgestive teract system such as
syrup, tablets, capsules, and soon (Margareta, 2010). External medicine does not enter to
disgestive teract system, like ointment, creams, suppository, mouthwash, and soon.
3. Part of etiquette :

There are things that must be in etiquette:

a. Identity of drugstore and pharmacists managing pharmacies

In etiquette, identity of drugstore such as name, address, telephone number,
pharmacy permint and the identity of the pharmacy manager are important
components (Syamsuni, 2007). With this identity, the patients can easily find out the
name of drug store and the offider who prepared the medicine.
b. Identity patients
Written the identity of the patient correctly can avoid mistakes when giving the
medicine (Syamsuni, 2007). The patient’s family can avoid mistakes when giving the
medicine. Information such as “baby”, “child”, “master” and “madam” can clarify the
patient’s identity.
c. Recipe number
On etiquette, the recipe number must be printed to facilitate spacing if needed in
future.
d. Rules of giving medicine
The rule of giving medicine in etiquette must be clearly stated and easily
understood by patients, avoiding using abbreviational and using medical terms
(Syamsuni, 2007). For certain medicine that riqure additional informatiaon such as for
eyes, ears, rectal, atc and the information must be provided. And information on the
use of drugs used if necessary and the volume of liquid medicine used to suit dosage
e. Name and strength of the medicine
By giving the name of medicine and the strength of medicine it can easily find out
dosage given to patients (Widyaningsih, 2018). Also the patiens will know the name
of medicine consumed and the dosage used.

f. Date of compounding the medicine

The medication is prepared based on the request of the prescription and according
with patients condition at a certain time. Written the date of compounding the
medicine on etiquette will show the patients therapeutic needs at that time.

There are several thing that must be considered in writing etiquette. The first is do not
use abbreviation or medical terms that patients may not understand. Secondly, number must
be written down for example “one”, “two”, “three” and so on (Atijah, 2011). For the external
medicine must be given aditional information as for the ayes, ears, rectal and so on. This is
very important for patients that are or still unfamiliar with it. Such as suppository and ovules
that are not swallowed. Writing etiquette must be accompanied a volume of liquid medicine
to help patients get right dosage. For the exsternal medicine must be printed usening blue
paper and in the blue etiquette must written contain “EXTERNAL MEDICINE”.

4. Etiquette In Real Life

Etiquette in prescription is a paper that contains information about how to use the
medicine in one day (Prayoga, 2017). In the real life we know about the use of etiquette
it is still not used well to ask for information about medicine received by patients. Most
hospitals and certain pharmacist have used etiquette correctly, but there are some
pharmaceutical installations that have not properly used etiquette. Most of those who
have not used etiquette properly are puskesmas. Many of them wrote how to use the drug
on the drug packaging. This can be caused by several factors, the first is the end of the
availability of etiquette in the place, and the second is the lack of awareness of
pharmacists or pharmaceutical technical personnel regarding the importance of etiquette
for patients. Even though etiquette is something that must be given to patients. Because
etiquette does not only contain the rules of use in one day, but also contains about the
name of the drug and its strength, expiration date, place of use of the drug if it is an
external drug, and dependence on the drug if it is an antibiotic drug. If only the use of
drugs is written on the packaging, the patient does not know the important things about
the drug as mentioned earlier. This can affect the healing process of patients, because of
the improper use of medicine.
Pharmacy technical staff should give etiquette to patients correctly. Because that
includes things that are very important for patients in helping the healing process. Mistakes in
giving etiquette can adversely affect a patient's health. Especially for special medicine such
as antibiotics that must be spent, if not spent it will lead to resistance to the antibiotic, if there
is resistance, then it must be repeated. In etiquette there is also a time for drug use, such as in
the morning, afternoon, evening, night, must be clear. And for external etiquette must be the
use of medicine such as the eyes, nose, ears, and so on. By giving etiquette can reduce the
patient's mistakes and can reduce the negative impact of the drug

5. Conclusion
