Engine FADEC FCS 5.0 and new MOP / IDG Gear Incorporation
Applicability:
PW1100G-JM: PW1127G-JM, PW1127GA-JM, PW1133G-JM, PW1133GA-JM
References:
This communication is to inform all Pratt & Whitney (P&W) PW1100G-JM operators of the issuance of the
above-referenced Service Bulletins and FAA AD note relating to preventing IFSDs due to fractures of a
gear within the main gearbox (Ref 4, previous PW1000G AOC’s).
The FAA has published the Reference 3 AD addressing incorporation of FCS 5.0 software and the new
MOP / IDG Gearshaft Assembly into the fleet. P&W has released Service Bulletins Reference 1 and 2
providing revised EEC software and a new integrated drive generator / oil pump drive gear assembly. The
Reference 3 AD language does not directly refer to the Reference 1 and 2 Service Bulletins; however the
referenced Service Bulletins provide the instructions on how to comply with the AD requirements. As
detailed below, the AD requires:
(1) Incorporation of the new integrated drive generator / oil pump drive gear
assembly for ETOPs operation within 90-120 days
(2) Incorporation of the latest EEC software (FCS 5.0) within 120 days for engines
which do not have the new integrated drive generator / oil pump drive gear assembly
Since the issuance of the Reference 3 AD on 13 June 2019, P&W has received several requests from
Operators regarding clarification of the installation prohibitions. The following is provided to help clarify
the intent of compliance with Reference 3, FAA Airworthiness Directive FAA-2019-0393.
The Installation Prohibition of the AD means that no engine main gearbox (MGB) assembly can have the
MOP / IDG gearshaft removed and replaced with a down-changed MOP / IDG gearshaft after the
effective date. The Installation Prohibition does not affect the installation of engines onto aircraft or MGB
assemblies onto engines.
The FAA language does not refer to P&W SBs; rather it refers to specific P/Ns or assembly P/Ns. While
that could lead to some confusion, the intent is clear with the right background, which is provided below.
Background:
MGB assembly P/N 5322505 is the current (pre-change / down-change) Main Gear Box Assembly. The
words ‘install a part eligible’ in the Reference 3 AD refer to the new MOP / IDG gearshaft. Integrated
drive generator (IDG) oil pump drive gearshaft assembly, P/N 5322630-01 is the current (pre-change /
down-change) gearshaft configuration. The new Integrated drive generator (IDG) oil pump drive gearshaft
assembly, P/N 5322882-01, is introduced by Reference 2, PW1000G-C-72-00-0129-00A-937A-D.
Required Actions
(1) Remove the MGB assembly, part number (P/N) 5322505
[P&W clarification: this is the current Main Gear Box Assembly], and install a part eligible for installation
as follows:
(i) For engines that operate on 180-minute extended operations (ETOPS) flights, within 90 days from the
effective date of this AD;
(ii) For engines that operate on 120-minute ETOPS flights, within 120 days from the effective date of this
AD.
[P&W clarification: These two above actions apply to ETOPS operation only; meaning replace or
upgrade a current main gearbox assembly so there is a new IDG oil pump drive gearshaft assembly
installed in it.]
(2) For engines with MGB assembly P/N 5322505, within 120 days from the effective date of this AD,
remove electronic engine control (EEC) software earlier than FCS 5.0 from the engine and load EEC
software that is eligible for installation.
[P&W clarification: Meaning install the new EEC software 5.0 into engines that do not have the new
Main Gear Box Assembly with the new IDG oil pump drive gearshaft assembly installed.]
(1) After the effective date of this AD, do not install integrated drive generator (IDG) oil pump drive
gearshaft assembly, P/N 5322630-01, into an MGB assembly.
[P&W clarification: Meaning do not install the current gearshaft into the gearbox; if the current gearshaft
needs to be replaced, it must be with the new gearshaft. This does not restrict the installation of any
engine with the current gearshaft/gearbox from being installed onto any aircraft with the exception of
ETOPS as specified in (1) above.]
[P&W clarification: Starting June 28th, it is not allowed to load or re-load FCS 4.5 or earlier software
onto any PW1100G engine - ETOPS or not / new gearshaft or not. It does not require engines with 4.5 or
earlier to be upgraded by June 28th. The upgrade requirements are specified in (2) above.]
