2.1 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: Follow facility general safety guidelines for electronic
assembly and testing.
2.4 Exterior surfaces must be free from scratches, sharp edges and burrs. Any paint touch-ups
must be neat and blend well with surrounding surface.
2.5 Wiring should be held neatly in place. Wiring should not rub against sharp edges such as
sheet metal ends or screw threads.
2.7 The person performing assembly operations is responsible for meeting the print
requirements. The checksheet is to be filled out by the assembler for each machine.
2.8 The location of the labels is defined on the prints. The labels are to be mounted straight,
without bubbles or lifted edges.
2.9 If a machine fails a test, indicate on the checklist the failure and repair. The unit must be
tested again after the repair for that function. The results of the test after the repair must
be recorded.
2.10 Any/all unexpected error codes displayed during testing must be resolved before
continuing.

3.1.3.1 Clean outside surface of the incubator block with isopropyl alcohol
prior to attaching the blanket.
3.1.3.2 The blanket must be laid flat with no lifting of the blanket away from
the incubator block. (Inspection to be done prior to placing insulation

Theory of Operation
This section will describe mechanical, electrical and software component aspects of the 3M Attest
290/290G Auto-reader/Incubator.
A. Electro-Optics Apparatus
The sled board contains the electro-optics apparatus for the 3M Attest 290/290G Auto-reader. Inside
the enclosed extrusion are two photo sensors and a bulb, or excitation source. Light from the excitation
source is shown on and reflected off the Biological Indicator, filtered to the desired wavelength, and a
proprietary embedded control system accurately measures the fluorescent activity. The embedded
control system also monitors the bulb intensity. This apparatus should not be disassembled unless the
manufacturing guidelines are followed.
Since the excitation source’s output intensity varies with respect to time ‘on’ and the proprietary
embedded control system’s ability to minimize the output variations, this timing technique assures that
each biological indicator placed into a reader incubator well will be read in the same excitation source
‘on’ time with a variation of less than +/- 1% of the total specified readout time.
D. Excitation Intensity
Each time a biological indicator is read by the electro-optics apparatus, the excitation source will
remain on for a fixed length of time, regardless of the number or location of the biological indicators.
________________________________________________________________________
Page 32 of 38 3M©2009 78-8078-9168-0
Attest Auto-reader Service Manual
After this on time, the excitation source intensity will be measured. This technique will allow the
ability to measure the output intensity of the excitation source after it has been operated, and stabilized.
If this output intensity is less than a chosen set-point, then the excitation source failure determination
can be ascertained. Error message (E8) will be displayed for the user if the excitation source is too dim
to accurately measure fluorescent intensity.
E. Sled Positioning.
The Electro-Optics Apparatus is mounted on a moveable platform called a Sled. The Sled position is
referenced to a home position via a sensor mounted on the sled and a vane mounted on the frame. This
establishes the home position of the sled. The home position is determined automatically at power-up
as well as when a series of BI readings are completed. Positioning is accomplished with a stepper
motor as an open loop system. The motor is given a certain number of steps to move the Sled from
one well position to the next. The number of steps moved away from the home position is
accumulated, and when the Sled returns home, the number of steps needed to move home is subtracted
from the accumulated value. A difference of more than 3 steps between the two values 3 consecutive
times will result in the system preventing normal operation, and an error message (E9) will be
displayed for the user. If the difference is more than 3 steps, the readings will be ignored and retaken.
F. BI Insertion Detection.
BI presence in each Incubator Block Well is determined using a photoelectric sensor mounted on the
NMOM board and placed next to each well. When the unit detects the cover open, the BI detection
sensors are read and the A/D value is compared to a setpoint. A value above the setpoint indicates the
presence of a BI. A value below the setpoint indicates an empty well.
H. Display.
The display consists of red, yellow, and green LEDs for each Incubator Well and dual 7-segment
displays. When a BI is inserted into a well, the yellow LED will light, indicating a BI in process.
After the full incubation time, if the BI result is negative, the green LED will light and remain on until
the BI is removed. If at any time during incubation a positive result is determined, the red LED will
light and remain on until the BI is removed. The buzzer will also sound if enabled, until the "buzzer"
button is pressed or the BI is removed. If a positive BI is removed then red LED will remain lit for
approximately 10 seconds, allowing the BI to be replaced for growth readout purposes. The 7-segment
display will display caution and error codes as well as time remaining for each BI if the "time
remaining" button is pressed. The LEDs all light in a test mode when the cover is opened. If a BI is
removed before incubation is complete, all LEDs for that well will light and the buzzer will sound for
10 seconds, with caution code C2 displayed, indicating the need to replace the BI. After 10 seconds,
the BI data is lost.
