LAB EXERCISE NO.5

A. OBJECTIVE:
To observe the effect of constricted/reduced area to velocity

B. INSTUMENTS & ACCESSORIES:

2 Containers (bottle and a regular shaped container of known volume capacity)
and timer.

C. PROCEDURE:
1) Open the faucet and fill the container of known volume and record the time it takes to
completely fill the container.
2) Cover less than half of the faucet tip with your finger/s, and open the faucet, then
record the time to fill the container, also obtain the area available for water flow or the
uncovered area.
3) Cover more than half of the faucet tip with your finger/s, and open the faucet then
record the time to fill the container.

D. DATA AND OBSERVATION

Volume of the Container: 1 L = 1000 cm3

No. of Trials Time (t) Area Uncovered Computed

(seconds) (cm2) Velocity (cm/s)
1 35.00 2.27 12.59
2 25.96 1.51 25.51
3 20.32 0.76 64.75

E. DISCUSSION

In this experiment, we conducted three tests to observe how long it will take to
completely fill a container with known volume but with different areas of flow for every trial.
First, the faucet tip is fully uncovered. We recorded the total time of flow to fully fill the
container. The faucet’s opening diameter is also measured to compute the area. Next, we
covered less than a half of the faucet tip with fingers and do the recording of time and area
of the uncovered part. And for the last trial, the faucet tip is covered more than half of the
total area. The velocity of every test is computed using the relationship:

volume of the container /areaof the uncovered part

velocity=
time

F. CONCLUSION

From the data and calculations shown above, it can be seen that as the area
reduces, the velocity of flow increases. This is supported by the continuity equation whereas it
is stated that the velocity of flow is inversely proportional to the area of flow.

We therefore conclude that an increase in velocity is the effect of

constricted/reduced area of flow.
