Quests of Valeria Solo Play Rules

INTRODUCTION AND GAME PLAY

VAL is the Quests of Valeria AI opponent, playing against you as Player 1. VAL seeks to HIRE citizens to his tableau then
COMPLETE as many quests as possible while denying quests to Player 1. VAL may only COMPLETE a quest that has been
RESERVED. If the Quest deck is ever empty and a new quest is needed to replenish the Tavern, Player 1 loses. If VAL
completes a 5th quest, Player 1 has one last turn to complete quests and accumulate VPs before end game scoring.
Player 1 plays as listed in the rule book; VAL plays as listed below.
SET UP

 Set out tavern card in center of table.

 Shuffle Guild Masters – deal one face down to VAL and a second to Player 1.
 Shuffle the Citizen Deck and deal out 3 citizen cards to VAL – create a face-down stack of the cards to the right of
the GM card for VAL.
 Deal out 3 citizen cards to Player 1’s hand.
 Lay out citizen cards under Tavern card in spaces 1-6 as outlined in the rulebook for a multiplayer game.
 Shuffle and deal out 4 Quest cards in a line above the Tavern.
 VAL always goes first – place the Starting Player card on top of VAL’s GM card.

VALS TURN
 CHECK for Reserved Quests -> if a Reserved Quest is present for VAL, FIRST ACTION will be to COMPLETE a quest /
SECOND ACTION will be to RESERVE a new quest {proceed to Completing a Reserved Quest section for further info);
if no reserved quest is present or a reserved quest cannot be completed now, proceed to the FLIP step {BYPASS THIS
STEP FOR THE FIRST TURN OF THE GAME}
 FLIP the top card of the citizen deck; Symbols in the left-hand corner will outline VALs actions for this turn (After
completing all listed actions, discard this card to the Citizen Discard pile):
o FIRST ACTION -> HIRE based on displayed Citizen Role
o Locate the Citizen Role icon (Worker, Soldier, Shadow, Holy) on the flipped card.
o Find the least cost citizen in the Tavern matching this symbol (reading from left-to-right)
o Hire this citizen, paying any card costs from the face-down stack next to VALs GM card.
o If unable to pay the costs from the stack OR there is no matching Citizen Role symbol in the Tavern, hire the
left-most (zero-cost) Citizen.
o VALs hired citizens are placed in a line from left-to-right starting to the right of the face-down stack near the
GM card.
o Perform all extra actions / powers listed on the bottom of the hired citizen’s card (to the best possible):
Extra Actions:
Hire -> Hire the least cost citizen available in the Tavern, paying costs from the face down stack; if unable to
pay costs, extra action ends
Draw -> Draw card(s) face down from the main Citizen deck and add this to the top of the face down stack
next to VALs GM card.
Reserve -> Find the highest VP quest in the Tavern and reserve this in a stack to the right of VALs citizen
tableau. If there are multiple quests with matching VP, select the quest with the LOWEST TOTAL
RESOURCES, regardless of resource symbol. If still tied, select one of these matching quests at random
(Bard) Draw 2 -> Discard top card of VAL GM Stack; Draw 2 to replace face down on top of GM stack; if no
cards in stack, DO NOT complete this action.
(Assassin) Discard -> Randomly discard one card from Player 1’s Tableau.
(Bogatyr) Quest -> Complete a reserved quest, if able (See Completing a Reserved Quest section)
(Thief) Steal -> Randomly place one card from Player 1’s Hand on the top of VALs GM Stack

(Bishop) Recruit -> Randomly place one card from Player 1’s Tableau into VALs Tableau
(Sorceress) Discard -> Discard the HIGHEST cost citizen in the Tavern (right-most)
o SECOND ACTION -> VARIES based on displayed Resource Icons
o Locate the Resource Icons (Gold, Magic, Strength) on the flipped card.
o Perform the following actions:
 Gold -> DRAW one card from the main Citizen deck and add this to the top of VALs GM stack.
 Magic -> HIRE the lowest cost citizen available in the Tavern, paying costs from VALs GM stack; follow all
extra actions on hired citizens as outline under the FIRST ACTION section.
 Strength -> COMPLETE a Reserved Quest OR RESERVE if a Quest is not available or cannot be
completed
o Start with the top Resource icon and perform actions for ALL listed Resources (these ‘extra’ actions
compensate for lack of synergistic play by VAL)
{Example} Merchant card is flipped for SECOND ACTION, VAL will first DRAW one card to the GM Stack then
HIRE the lowest cost citizen in the Tavern.
o BONUS ACTION -> After all other SECOND ACTIONS have been completed, complete the extra actions on the
bottom of the flipped card as if it was hired (see above)
o If the TOTAL of the displayed Resource Icons equals 3 (Paladin, Alchemist, Priestess, Butcher, Rogue,
Champion), RESET the quests in the Tavern and RESERVE the highest VP quest, breaking ties with the lowest
resource costs. {This is in lieu of a printed BONUS ACTION on this card.}
o CLEAN UP -> At the end of VALs turn, discard the flipped card. Also, consolidate Citizens in the Tavern to the left
and replenish to 6, refilling from the Citizen Deck. Replenish Quests in the Tavern to 4, refilling from the Quest
Deck.
 COMPLETING A QUEST (VAL)
o Select a Reserved Quest; if multiple quests have been reserved, start with the highest VP quest, breaking ties
with the lowest TOTAL number of required resources. Search VAL’s tableau for matching Citizen Role icons,
beginning with the left-most citizen in VALs tableau. If all matching citizen roles are not present, select a
different reserved quest OR if no further quests are available, a quest cannot be completed at this time.
o For each matching Citizen for the selected quest, pick up those cards from VALs tableau and compare the TOTAL
number of Resources Produced on these cards versus the TOTAL number of Resources Required on the quest.
Resource icon types do not matter, just the listed number.
 If the TOTAL number of Resources Produced in VALs tableau < TOTAL number of Resources Required on the
quest, the quest cannot be completed at this time.
 If the TOTAL of the citizens’ resources => the quest requirements, COMPLETE this quest.
 If the TOTAL of the citizens’ resources < the quest requirements, begin adding the left-most citizen from
VAL’s tableau, adding the TOTAL number of resources to this quest. Repeat as necessary until the quest can
be completed.
o SPECIAL NOTE ON WARLORD, SORCERESS, AND MINER: As these cards have a doubling effect, by themselves,
they are worth zero for resources when selected for their Citizen role. If these citizens are added to a quest
later for their resources, they will double the total of the resources accumulated for the quest to that point.
o EXAMPLE – Quest to be completed is ‘Escort Brother Maynard On Pilgrimage’; VAL has in the tableau (from left
to right) -> Peasant, Sorceress, Archer, Summoner, Alchemist. Beginning with the left-most citizen, search for
matching citizens; first matching citizen is the Archer (Soldier) and next is the Summoner (Holy). These two
complete the requirements for citizens and bring a total of 3 resources (two Strength and one Magic, but types
do not count). In order to round out the quest, start back at the left-most citizen and add the Peasant (+1
resource / running total of four). Next add the Sorceress, who doubles the total resources accumulated
(Running total of four is now doubled to eight). Eight is the total number of resources needed for this quest
(one Gold, four Magic, and three Strength = eight Total Resources), so this quest can be completed. The
Alchemist is not needed on this quest, and shifts to the left, allowing room for future hired citizens.

o When a quest is completed, discard all citizens selected for that quest and shift to the left all remaining citizens
in VALs tableau; gain any bonus actions provided by that quest, hiring new citizens to the right of those
remaining in the tableau.
END GAME SCORING
Game ends immediately if the Quest deck is empty and a quest needs to be replaced in the Tavern; Player 1 loses.
If either VAL or Player 1 have 5 or more quests at the end of Player 1’s turn, the game will end and scoring will be
completed as outlined in the multiplayer rules, following tie-breakers as necessary.
