ACI 318 Commentary help you understand how a
certain provision applies to your situation?

Would reviewing another engineer’s building

design calculations and structural drawings,
using a step-by-step explanation, help you?

Would an easily searchable library of articles

about common field problems and common repair
approaches help you with your field problems?

Would a series of articles explaining concrete and

concrete materials be of help?

Then technical help is just a mouse click away. The

Concrete Knowledge Center presents practice-
oriented technical information useful in the design,
construction, and repair of concrete and concrete
structures. Visit us on the Web at www.concrete.org.

Welcome to the American Concrete Institute

Welcome to ACI—one of the world’s leading authorities on concrete technology.

As a member of ACI, you will receive benefits designed to keep you on the
leading edge of concrete technology. These benefits are discussed in detail
later in this booklet.

The strength of the Institute is its membership. During more than 100 years
of operation, ACI, through its members, has contributed to the progress of
construction technology. For a history of ACI, visit www.concrete.org/
members/mem_info_history.htm. As a member of ACI, we encourage you to
share your expertise by participating in our technical committees (see Page 14
for details).

Introduction To ACI
Our mission is embodied
in our motto...
Advancing Concrete
Knowledge.

Only by working together can we expand the database of concrete knowledge.

The membership of ACI includes anyone interested in concrete from all segments
of the industry involved with the design, construction, and maintenance of
concrete structures.

With members in over 100 countries, we are truly an international society

that provides you with information on engineering and construction practices
worldwide. ACI, in cooperation with concrete-related associations around
the world, has formalized a number of International Partnership Agreements
in the interest of facilitating the formation of a unified concrete knowledge
community made up of equal partners. Through these agreements, you can
access information from our Partners—information not normally available in
any one country.

ACI committees offer a forum for representatives from the concrete industry,
engineers, researchers, and other interested individuals to discuss and
publish technical information related to concrete design and construction.
Through a broad consensus process, ACI codes, reports, guides, and specifications
are developed that reflect the best concrete knowledge in the fields of concrete
design, construction, inspection, materials, and repair.

ACI strives to provide you with the reference material to help you in your day-
to-day work. ACI has over 400 documents dedicated to improving the design,
construction, maintenance, and repair of concrete and masonry structures. As
a member, you will receive discounts of up to 40% on all purchases and may
be eligible to charge purchases to your interest-free account.

Our online Concrete Knowledge Center offers case studies, answers questions
related to ACI codes and standards, and is available to you at no charge (see
Introduction To ACI

Page 10 for details).

If you need CEUs to maintain your engineering license, up to 0.8 are available
free of charge (see Page 11 for details).

As an ACI member, you receive Concrete International (CI), the Institute’s

monthly magazine. CI presents articles on topics of major importance to those
involved in the practice of concrete design and construction. Durability, floors
and foundations, proper mixing and curing, and formwork are just a few of
the content areas covered. You also may choose the ACI Materials Journal, ACI
Structural Journal, or Concrete Repair Bulletin (CRB) as part of your membership
package. The ACI Materials Journal and the ACI Structural Journal are the peer-
reviewed venues for papers summarizing the current research in areas such as
structural analysis, materials properties, design theory, and testing. For practical
information on repair and rehabilitation, you may choose the CRB.

For a complete listing of ACI publications, events, and activities, or to

update your membership records 24 hours a day, please visit our website at
www.concrete.org.

ACI is dedicated to providing the tools and resources you need to excel in
the concrete industry. The information in
this booklet is arranged to help you receive
the most value from your ACI membership. View ACI’s Bylaws

Sustaining Member receives all of the Member benefits and has the company
logo displayed on ACI’s website, in CI each month, and at ACI conventions
and World of Concrete each year. Further, a Sustaining Member receives a
complimentary copy of each new ACI document; a copy of the ACI Manual of
Concrete Practice in a six-volume set and one in CD-ROM; two copies of CI, the
ACI Structural Journal, the ACI Materials Journal, and the CRB; discounts for all
employees on ACI publications, seminars, conventions, and online CEUs; and
a membership plaque.

• A Young Professional Member (formerly Junior) is an individual interested

in concrete who is less than 28 years of age.

• A Student Member is a person 28 years of age or younger and a registered

full-time student at an educational institution. Full-time students over
28 years of age may be granted Student Membership on an annual basis
when the request for such classification is endorsed by the student’s
faculty advisor. See Student Programs on Page 17 for more information
regarding free E-Memberships for students.

Concrete Knowledge Center

This online tool is a collection of practice-oriented technical information

useful in the design, construction, and repair of concrete and concrete structures.
Through the Concrete Knowledge Center, you may review actual design case
studies, view references from the ACI 318, study common technical questions,
download design spreadsheets, review troubleshooting articles, access
hundreds of technical video presentations, visit a virtual concrete laboratory,
and download select ACI documents free of charge. This online resource
center can help you:

• Reduce design learning time

Case studies presented in the Concrete Knowledge Center can reduce
learning time for engineers less familiar with concrete design. These interactive
studies provide step-by-step direction for analyzing, designing, and detailing
reinforced concrete structures in the context of real-world projects.

• Better understand code provisions

The commentary for ACI 318 provides background, design recommendations,
and references to related code provisions. Now, read-only access is available
to 292 individually authored papers cited in the commentary.

• Answer commonly asked questions

ACI receives questions daily regarding provisions in the code requirements.
You can now access answers for questions on topics such as sustainability,
residential concrete, formwork, and so much more.

10
These features are particularly useful to practicing engineers who need to
use the ACI 318. Experienced engineers will find these resources helpful
in refining their design practices. To visit the Concrete Knowledge Center,
go to www.concrete.org and click on Technical.

Certification

ACI offers numerous programs internationally to certify concrete craftsmen,

technicians, supervisors, and inspectors.

Benefits of ACI Certification to the individual include receipt of an

internationally-recognized credential from ACI indicating the individual has
demonstrated knowledge and ability. In many cases, certification provides
the opportunity to be considered for employment on projects where ACI
Certification is required directly or by reference in the project specifications.

Benefits of ACI Certification to employers include the ability to easily identify

individuals who have demonstrated their knowledge, skills, and ability to

pass the ACI Certification examinations and in employing these individuals,

the ability to bid on projects requiring ACI-certified personnel, as well as being
recognized as a company committed to quality.

For more information, go to www.ACICertification.com.

20
The project requires quality construction
materials and engineering design.

Why shouldn’t it demand the same for

construction personnel?

Every year the American Concrete Institute certifies over

20,000 field technicians, laboratory technicians, inspectors,
flatwork finishers, tilt-up supervisors, and shotcrete nozzlemen.

On your next project, specify quality—specify ACI Certification.

To learn more about the ACI Certification program, visit

www.ACIcertification.org.
Awards, Honors, and Member Recognition

ACI recognizes the contributions of many different, deserving individuals or

corporations in the form of awards, scholarships, fellowships, paper awards,
personal awards, and others. To learn more about ACI awards and to view a

list of recipients, go to www.concrete.org/members/mem_info_awards.htm.

Honorary Members

The Institute acknowledges persons of eminence in their field, and

those who perform extraordinary meritorious service to the Institute, by
conferring on them Honorary Membership, which is ACI’s highest honor. For
more information and a list of Honorary Members, go to www.concrete.org
and click on Membership.

Fellows of the Institute

ACI honors members who have made outstanding contributions to the

production or use of concrete materials, products, and structures in the areas of
education, research, development, design, construction, or management. In
