UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, MARDAN

Department of Computer Software Engineering

Assignment # 2: Complex Engineering Problem

Subject Name: SE-405 Computer Communication & Networks
Semester: Spring 2019 (6th) Marks: 10
Assigned on: 13-05-2019 Submission Due Date: 24-06-2019

Target CLO-3, PLO-3: Design/Development of Solution, Taxonomy Level: 4 (Analysis and Evaluation)

Note:
1) This assignment should be undertaken by the students individually.
2) Assessment of this assignment will be done through the rubrics handed over to the students.

Problem Statement:

University of Engineering and Technology Mardan has four (04) teaching departments, library, admin
block, hostels and other offices. A dedicated 50 Mbps PERN fiber optic connection is available for
providing connectivity from the Campus premises to the ISP through a gigabit Ethernet connection.
Students, supporting staff and faculty in the mentioned buildings need connectivity to the Internet either
through their laptops, smart phones or desktop computers.

Objectives:

Following are the objectives of this assignment:

i. To ensure wired and wireless connectivity as per requirements to all the users.
ii. To ensure fair and optimal usage of the available bandwidth.
iii. To auto-configure IP (in private range), sub-nets, default gateway etc. of all the systems.
iv. To identify the consequences to society and environment posed by the solution provided.
Investigation:

The above network is already deployed; however, there are many issues in the existing solutions.
Students need to investigate the problem/problem areas.
Evaluation

Students need to justify the choice of their design (e.g., topologies), components (e.g., switches
and access points), links etc.
Design:

Students need to design a solution which achieve the mentioned objectives.

Deliverables:
The deliverable should consist of: (i) A full fledge running network system designed in the Cisco’s
Packetracer keeping in mind the users’ requirements and constraints. (ii) A short report in the standard
format encompassing the problem analysis, requirement document, design, and implementation.

Complex Engineering Problem

Attributes Conformance

S# Attribute Present in the Problem

1 Range of conflicting requirements: This assignment is Yes
intended to challenge students to address a wide range of
conflicting issues – including, but not limited to, the fair
share of each user within the available bandwidth.
2 Depth of Analysis required: There is no obvious solution to Yes
this assignment. Creative thinking in terms of usage of
appropriate technologies to design is central to this
assignment.
3 Depth of knowledge required: Demonstration of sound Yes
engineering design principles and problem solving is
required to solve this assignment. In-depth knowledge of
Computer Networks is required to accomplish this task.
4 Familiarity of issues: Students are not familiar with the Yes
issues which may be encountered as they are
doing/experiencing this task for the first time. Significant
challenges beyond what students have experienced in
previous projects are present in this assignment.
5 Extent of applicable codes: Is not outside the problems No
encompassed by standards and codes of practice for
professional engineers.
6 Extent of stakeholder Involved: Diverse groups of Yes
stakeholders (Students, faculty and allied-staff) with
involvement and level of widely varying needs.
7 Consequences: Have significant consequences in a range of Yes
contexts. For example, cyber crimes, online frauds, hacking
etc.
8 Interdependence: The system consists of sub-systems and Yes
components. Students must address the design of each
component separately and in combination with the other
components.
