1. Name of Lesson: M&M Mathematics

2. Grade Level: First Grade

3. Suggested Group Size: Individual Instruction

4. Subject: Mathematics; Essential Concepts, Skills, and Experiences

5. Standard: (1)1.4 use the inherent patterns in numbers to count by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s to
100 [NS/PS 1.1.5]

6. Objective: Students will understand how to group objects into 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s in
order to count to 100.

7. Materials:

• Ziploc Bags full of more than 100 mini M&Ms located in a green basket on
the right top shelf behind the teacher’s desk
• A paper with how to count to 100 in 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s located in the green
basket on the right top shelf behind the teacher’s desk, with the M&Ms
• Number lines counting from 1-100 for students located in their desks
o Extras number lines are on the middle of the second shelf behind the
teacher’s desk in a blue basket. Make sure to collect them after the
activity and return them to the basket.
• Hand Sanitizer bottle on the corner of the teacher’s desk
• Clorox wipes in a yellow container under the kitchen sink in the back corner
of the classroom
• Printed spread sheet with students’ names and the list of grouping methods,
located in the grade book binder inside of the top drawer of the teacher’s desk

8. Procedures:

1) The teacher will locate the green basket mentioned in the materials section
and take out the paper with different ways to count to 100.
2) The teacher will stand in front of the class, with the paper, and ask students to
follow the teacher’s lead in counting to 100 starting with 1s, then 2s, then 5s,
and finish with 10s. This is to refresh the students’ memory of how to do so.
3) Explain to the students that they are each going to get a bag of M&Ms (hold
up a bag to show the students). Explain that they are going to count 100
M&Ms out of the bag (inform them there are more than 100 in there).
4) After they have counted 100 out, they will separate the 100 M&Ms into
groups of 2s and then raise their hand for the teacher to check. After the
teacher gives the okay, they can move on, to separating the 100 M&Ms into 5s
and repeat the process over until they have done up to 10s and each grouping
has received an okay from the teacher.

5) After explaining the directions, Let the students know they can pull out their
number lines as mentioned in the materials section, if they are struggling. (If
students can’t find theirs, give them one of the extras from the blue basket as
mentioned in the materials section)
6) The teacher will put a drop of hand sanitizer on each of the student’s hands
and give each student a Clorox wipe to clean their desks.
7) As the teacher goes around to give each student a Ziploc bag of M&Ms they
will have a trash can for students to place their used Clorox wipes in.
8) Walk around the room to ensure students are on the right track. Help answer
students’ questions.
9) When students’ raise their hand bring the printed spread sheet over and check
that they have grouped correctly by having students count them aloud for you.
If students do it correctly put a check mark in the spread sheet next to the
student’s name and under the correct category. Inform them that they can
move on to the next set of number grouping. If the student has made an error
in the grouping have them try again and come back to check. If they have
made an error in the counting, have them start over. If they still aren’t getting
it help them and then let them do it on their own to show they know it. The
teacher may then give the student a check mark and an okay to move on.
10) Once the student has completed all of the grouping methods, they should
return all of their M&Ms to their Ziploc bag, and then can eat their mini
M&Ms.

9. Assessment: Each time a student completes one of the grouping methods they will
raise their hand and the teacher will go over to check it. The student will also count
the grouped numbers out loud so the teacher can ensure that they can count by 1s, 2s,
5s, and 10s up to 100. When the student does it correctly the teacher will mark them
off with a check mark, for each group of counting, in the grade book to see who
knows how to do it and who needs more help.
