Throughout my educational experiences, I often found myself encountering challenges in

literacy from understanding context as well as in the process of decoding material. In general, it

seemed as if I aimed to use the knowledge accumulated from past educational experiences such

as trying to apply the simplistic formula of question and answer basis to everything that I was

learning. So when I first entered highschool, specifically AP American US History class, I was in

for a wide awakening, not aware that my way of learning process altogether would

change.There would come times where I would read a piece of text regarding the reconstruction

taking place after the civil war and I would find myself struggling with understanding the

material at hand as I looked at the unfamiliar words on the pages not knowing how to make sense

and being unaware of the author’s purpose and usage of diction since it was all so new to me. I

had a mission to try and absorb all the devices that were contained within the pages. After what

seemed like hours and hours of looking up definitions, taking annotated notes based off watching

youtube videos, reading online articles websites such as ​History.com ​ and other pieces of

interactive digital or print resources, I finally found what I was searching for and was able to

better understand the content. I was able to decode the complex reading and form it based off

my own findings and observations to connect it into a way that I was able to understand for my

well-being. Furthermore, I found that the more I studied the subject, the better I was able to fully

grasp the information and succeed in the reciprocation of the material. From then on out, it

became like a routine that before or after any assignment given, I would make sure to further

dive into the topic researching anything I was struggling with as well as search for ways to

connect what I was studying to modern usages such as social media like twitter as a way to

formulate different ideas to better come across and understanding for what I was learning.
