Certainly, seen as a discrepancy in social interaction, social media has been a great outlet

and communication proxy for me. Social media has been in my life for the better. Teaching me

to be able to differentiate things such as healthy communication and toxic communication with

relationships and friendships. Much of the things I learned has even assisted with my academic

knowledge of topics like history, science, and journalism. I appreciate all the people I have met

strictly through social media including people from graduating class that I became friends with

on Instagram and Twitter just by having NCAT as a common interest. Closer friendships have

benefited through good social interactions and the sending of memes. It has allowed me to

connect with people on a business level by supporting students that own businesses and

marketing their work. Social media has allowed me to form potentially long-lasting relationships

with people I would not have met the same way if it were not for social media.

Even though I see social media as a major benefit, I know a lot of people that is not as

trusting with social media whether from past experiences or things learned outside of experience.

Instagram has 500 million daily active users and I know people who don’t have accounts simply

because they don’t like the user interface of the application or they deactivated their account

because of a traumatic experience. I have friends who have been catfished by people they were

talking to for long periods of time and they turned out not to be who they said they were.

Instances like that lay out a platform for people to lose trust for social media interactions. I
believe social media has made a way for people to make easy money, get their businesses

broadcasted, and makes it easier for people to support others. For content creators, it has never

been easier to get thousands to see your work especially when you are in the right social

networks. Models, musicians, artists, directors/videographers, photographers and curators are

able to branch out their work and gain supporters. This allows for creatives to be discovered and

get paid for their talent and hard work. Communication, building relationships or a business

through social media will continue to evolve and lives will thrive off the interaction with it, but

hopefully more people will understand social media from my perspective and use it to the best of

their abiltiies.
