Classroom Management Model

Classroom Expectations

RESPECT:

1. Me
2. Each other
3. Equipment/Instruments
4. Classroom

- Respect is important because it helps in keeping the classroom a safe environment

that makes everyone feel welcome and appreciated.

BE:

1. Prepared
2. On time
3. Accountable
4. Attentive
5. Courteous
6. RESPECTFUL!

- I included all of these because these are also qualities that my students should be

expecting from me. These are also qualities that will prepare students for when they

are older and have their own jobs.

Technology: There is a time and a place. If cell phones or any other forms of technology are in
use without permission, the phone will be taken for the rest of the class period.

- This rule is important because it says that students must have permission from me

(the teacher) in order to use technology in my classroom. That being said, if there is

no permission then I will be able to take the phone away until the end of my class.
Philosophical Approach to Dealing with Misbehavior and Challenging Students

Not every student is going to seek the teacher’s approval. In fact, some of them could

care less about how we feel about them and will do anything that they can to push our buttons.

That is when we as teachers need to remind ourselves why we do what we do and that is to reach

all students and guide them onto the path of success. Students come from many different

backgrounds and sometimes that means that they don’t even have approval from their parents at

home. That is why it is our job to show students that we care about them and even if they aren’t

seeking for our approval, we know that they are capable of achieving success. Sometimes we

have more faith in them than they do in themselves.

If a student is constantly misbehaving, they are seeking attention. I would start by not

giving the attention that they are seeking. If they start bringing other students into the equation

they are now disrupting other students from their learning which isn’t fair. That is when I take

the student who is misbehaving out of the equation. Either they are going to participate in the

class, or they are going to have to explain to the principle or their parents why they decided not

to participate in class. Overall, I want to make sure that I am paying attention to all of my

students but if they are seeking that attention then I will make sure that I am not giving them that

attention in front of the entire class to avoid more conflict between the student and I. After class

when I can address the situation one on one then I will give that student attention and figure out

why they are acting the way that they are. Often times, the student has something going on

outside of school that is making them act up which is why it is my job to figure them out and

then find a way to work with the student.

Classroom Student Anecdote

Background Information: This student is either a freshman or sophomore in High School. She

plays the trumpet and it is very evident that she wants nothing to do with band. She plays her

trumpet with one hand and sits so slumped over that it looks like she can slide out of her chair at

any moment. Not only does she play with poor posture while sitting, she can also magically

march on the field, play her trumpet, and check her phone at the same time. While we were

outside going over drill, this young lady did not hold back on checking her phone and using it

during Marching Band rehearsal.

Description of the Incident: After learning drill for halftime the teacher decided to transition

from halftime to pregame. During this transition the student was checking the phone even as the

teacher was giving instruction right in front of her. This is when the teacher finally had enough.

Discipline Measure Used: The teacher then walked up to the student and said, “If you don’t put

that away I will take it away.” Well, she made it seem like she was going to put it in her pocket

but she didn’t realize that I was watching from behind. This means I saw her pretend to put the

phone in her pocket as the teacher was walking away and pull it back out. Then she became

aware that I was watching the whole thing go down as I said, “HEY!” Never in my life did I ever

think that a student might rip my head off until that moment. She gave me one of the nastiest

scowls that I have ever seen. In fact, the teacher and I talked about it later and he said, “If looks

could kill, you would definitely be in an ambulance right now.”

Assessment: If I was the teacher, I would have made the interaction more private. I would also

make sure that my expectations are always known. I need to always be holding my students

accountable, otherwise they aren’t going to expect it when I finally do something about the

misbehavior.
