1.0 PURPOSE

2.0 SCOPE

3.0 CONTROLLING SPECIFICATIONS

4.0 MATERIALS

5.0 PROCEDURES

6.0 INSPECTIONS
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this procedure is for supervision of concreting works at site and to
ensure that proper quality control is made at site.

SCOPE:
This procedure covers supervision and method of record keeping for all concreting
works at all structures.

CONTROLLING SPECIFICATION
IS: 456 and approved construction drawings.

MATERIALS
Fine & Coarse Aggregate
Procured materials for site work will be tested for all the properties as stipulated in
IS: 383 and to check its suitability. These materials will be free from injurious
amounts of alkalis, vegetable matter, and other deleterious substances.
The grading of aggregates will conform to table 2,4 & 5 of IS: 383 After assessing
the properties of the aggregates, a suitable mix proportion for different grades of
concrete will be tested in lab and the same will be got approved by the Engineer in
charge. Grading of aggregates shall be checked weekly for their conformity with
mix design grading. Each type and grade of aggregate will be stored separately on
hard firm ground.
Cement:
Unless otherwise specified cement will be ordinary Portland cement conforming to
IS: 269 and IS: 8112. Cement will be stored in godowns at site to protect from
dampness and will be made easily accessible for proper inspection and accounting.
Cement mobilized for the work shall have MTC, or otherwise, it should be tested in
a reputed lab as per the relevant IS specifications.

Steel
Tor steel reinforcement for cement concrete works will confirm to high yield strength
deformed steel bars of Grade Fe 415 and IS: 1786 and relevant parts of IS: 456
and co-related with MTC (Manufacturer's test certificate). MTC which will be
produced for all types of reinforcement steel and for all the consignments coming
to site and in the case of absence of MTC, the same shall be tested in an approved
lab as per the relevant IS code and sampling procedure. All reinforcement bars will
be clean and free from dirt, oil, paints, grease, mill scales, and loose rust. Bar
bending schedule will be prepared before cutting.
Form Work
Formwork will be of commercial plywood or steel plates. The shuttering will be
supported on battens and props of pipes cross-braced together. The surface of
shuttering in contact with concrete will be given a coating of shuttering oil. Removal
of shuttering will be as per IS 456. The completed form- work shall be inspected as
per QA/QC plans.
Water
The water used for site work will be clean and free from harmful chemicals and
organic material. To ascertain the same, a sample of water will be tested in any of
the reputed laboratories prior to the commencement of work and later on in case if
any visible change is found. The water shall be in general confirmed to the
requirement of IS: 456.

PROCEDURE:
All concreting works will confirm to the latest editions of IS specifications. The
grading, design of mix, sampling, and strength testing of concrete will be as per IS:
456 and other relevant codes mentioned therein.
A. Plain Cement Concrete:
For all PCC works, the concrete will be mixed in an approved mechanical mixer.
The coarse and fine aggregates will be measured in approved measuring boxes or
in weigh batcher. For volume batching the mass of aggregates to be used will be
divided by the bulk density of the aggregates to get the mix proportion. Compaction
of lean concrete will be done manually using rammers. PCC for flooring etc shall be
consolidated using vibrators. Form work for PCC will be done using battens I
wooden planks as and where required.
B. Reinforced Cement Concrete:
For all the RCC works, concrete shall be produced in Batching Plant. Batching of
concrete ingredients shall be by weigh batcher only. Nominal mix concrete by mixer
machine as an alternate shall be produced only in case of exigency or smaller
quantities not viable with batching plant. The Engineer in charge shall be informed
about the concreting program well in advance. Availability and arrangement of
necessary materials and equipments shall be checked before calling for inspection.
All information pertaining to a particular concrete pour shall be incorporated in Pour
Cards and the pouring shall commence only after due review of relevant QA
documents. Coarse aggregate, fine aggregate and water sample used for
concreting shall be checked in case of change of source.
Requisite concreting ingredients shall be mixed in approved batching plant. The
mixing time shall not be less than 2 minutes for a mixer drum of 0.75cum. capacity
and 2.5 minutes for a mixer drum of capacity more than 0.75cum. Concrete shall
not be dropped from a height of more than 1.5m and shall be laid in position in
horizontal layers and shall be compacted using mechanical vibrators. The whole
process shall be completed before initial setting takes place.
Whenever a construction joint to be provided in a monolithic structure, bonding
grooves will be formed in the concrete already laid and the surface will be
roughened, cleaned and given a wash of neat cement slurry before laying new
concrete as laid down in clause 12.4.1 of IS:456. The concrete will be cured for a
minimum period of 07 days from the day of casting. Bending, binding, lapping and
placing reinforcement in position will be done as per IS: 456, IS: 2052 and other
relevant codes.
Bars will be cleaned of rust, scales, grease, oil, and any other foreign matter before
placing in position. Unless otherwise specified, minimum cover, spacing, and bond
length will be as per IS: 456.

C. Monolithic reinforced cement concrete:

If the design requirement of any structure is monolithic, then the pouring shall be
done continuously to avoid formation of any cold joints. Curing will be done for a
minimum period of 07 days from the day of casting.
INSPECTION
Sampling and strength testing of concrete cubes shall be in accordance to IS: 456
and other relevant codes mentioned therein.
