Universal Design for Learning

This tool supports the Universal Design for Learning by being able to accommodate different learners. This
the video that I am creating with the students, there will be a transcript for those that have a hearing
disability. For those who are visually impaired, then the audio will be provided for them and even headphones
for them to modify the volume of the video. The BrainPOP video that I have provided for the lesson also
includes these features for students who need that support.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will be opening up the lesson by letting students watch the BrainPOP video so they can get some background
knowledge of what we are learning. Then I will go over the continent of the world and they all are. I will
include interesting facts or features of each continent. Then I will have students chose a group and have them
chose a continent of their choice. Only one continent per group and no one can have the same continent.
Students will then create their own video of the continent they have chosen.

I will be showing students an example of what I have created but my video will include all continents and a
brief overview of each continent. Students will be going more in depth to their continent by doing research.
They will be able to use online resources and print resources for this part. Students will then gather their
information and start working on creating this video. I will be an aid to students who need help with the

iMovie software when it comes to creating their video. Students will have a few days to work on this activity
and plenty of time to use resources in the classroom and the library. Once students are done, they will
present their videos to the class.

Importance of technology:

Using a multimedia tool is critical in this lesson because of the experience it provides for students. They get to
create their own video and show it to the class, they get to see technology at their fingertips. They get to do
their own research to create an impactful video. They also get to include cool features of each continent such
as the culture, music, where it is located and other cool facts that they want to input into their video.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Some issues could definitely arise when it comes to this lesson. I have to keep in mind that there are privacy
policies when students are doing their research. Students could come upon websites that aren’t safe. Some
parents do not like their child on the internet because of the harmful content they could be exposed to. To
minimize this issue, I would provide students with a list of online resources that they can use. I would make
sure these websites provide all the information that my students need so that they don’t stray away on to
other sites. I would also provide a newsletter or a post on my classroom blog for parents to have insight on
what it is their children are working on. If parents have some kind of issue with the project, then they could
contact me and I could either provide another activity for that student or I could accommodate the project for
that student.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson impacted students learning by creating an experience for them. They were in control of a lot of their learning
by finding the research information they wanted for their movie. They created their own movie and included features
that they felt would make their video better. They were able to present their video to the class and show what they have
learned. This lesson could have been taken above and beyond for students by also allowing them to create these movies
for international culture day. Students could have dressed up, created a dance or showed a cool artifact from that
continent and shared it with not only the classroom but the school. This is one of my favorite lessons because I love that
my students get to learn about other cultures. It is almost as if they get to leave their classroom to discover a new world,
but they never leave your sight.
