Cover Letter for Internship 1

Food Research and Action Center

Washington, D.C. 20009

Dear Summer Internship Coordinator:

I am writing to express my interest in the summer internship the position in the Child Nutrition
Policy Analysis division at the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC). I am a first year
Master’s student at the Yale School of Public Health concentrating in Social and Behavioral
Sciences. My goal upon graduation is to work in the field of nutrition policy, and an internship at
FRAC would allow me to build new skills and network with experts in the field.

Prior to entering Yale I worked at the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity where I
contributed to important research and advocacy efforts. One of the accomplishments I am most
proud of was the development and coordination of a project examining the cost-effectiveness of
non-food and food fundraisers in Connecticut schools. In addition, I supported the New Haven
Food Policy Council by researching, creating informational and strategic documents, and
drafting a food policy for the City of New Haven.

Through coursework at Yale I have been immersed in policy evaluation and analysis. For
example, as part of a recent practicum experience I collaborated with the New Haven School
Wellness Committee to evaluate the implementation of school wellness policies. I was
introduced to the rigor and methods of evaluation and was fortunate to be invited to present my
project at the most recent annual meeting of the American Public Health Association.
Additionally, I completed a policy analysis exploring Food and Drug Administration reform
legislation currently circulating in Congress.

I am passionate about food policy issues and would love the opportunity to contribute to the
important work at FRAC as a summer intern. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,

Lana Hawkins-Cohen

Mr. Oren Davidson
New York-Presbyterian Hospital
New York, NY

Dear Mr. Davidson,

I am writing to express my interest in the summer internship position within the Support Services
and Patient Centered Care Department at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. I am currently a first
year student at the Yale School of Public Health concentrating in Health Management. As part of
my program, I have completed core public health courses as well as Accounting, Sourcing and
Managing Funds, and Operations at the Yale School of Management.

My goal upon graduation next spring is to secure a fellowship in hospital administration. I

believe that a summer internship at New York-Presbyterian will be invaluable in helping me
develop a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics that drive the financing and delivery of
care in a large academic medical center.

Prior to enrolling in graduate school, I worked for three years as the Director of Meeting
Planning for the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. This position provided me with the
opportunity to collaborate with doctors, allied health professionals and patients in developing
educational programs that raised awareness about PH with the goal of earlier diagnosis, better
disease management and improved patient prognosis. My experience in aligning the motivations
of various stakeholders and executing projects in high-stress situations has helped me to foster a
strong skill set that will translate well in a hospital operations role. I am eager to apply the
lessons I’ve learned in project management to improving clinical quality and the patient
experience within the hospital delivery system.

I believe that the combination of my academic and professional experiences has provided me
with the organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills that will enable me to make a
significant contribution to the Support Services and Patient Centered Care Department at New
York-Presbyterian Hospital. Enclosed please find a copy of my resume, which provides
additional information on my background and work experience. Thank you for your time and
consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Beth Gerardi

Cover Letter for Job Opportunity
Dear Hiring Manager,

In May 2016 I will graduate from the Yale University School of Public Health with a Master of
Public Health degree and a concentration in Health Policy. I am applying for an Associate
position at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), with a preference for the New York office. My
training in analytics, leadership skills, and experiences in collaborating with senior leaders in a
consulting role at HealthPro Consulting provide me with a foundation for blending well into
BCG’s case teams. I first learned of The Boston Consulting Group when I heard Boston office
director Meg Brandt’s inspirational talk at the Harvard Healthcare Conference in January 2013.

This past summer I worked in the Health and Productivity practice at HealthPro Consulting
where I gained essential analytic, strategy, and process-thinking skills. One highlight of my
experience was to review over one hundred medical records for employees under medical
management at a large hospital based client, and derive potential trends that the client could use
in their program design strategy. I produced analytics to support my initial findings that there
were significant gaps in management for multiple costly and preventable disease states. I
presented my results to our company chairman and worked directly with him to develop program
design strategies that our client will implement. Since it is a relatively new practice, I also
championed an internal project that documented and streamlined all processes involved in a new
client engagement. This project required me to work closely with key actors at each stage of the
project lifecycle, allowing me to document and analyze their processes. This document is now
used in new employee training and as a practice reference guide for all new engagements.

My interdisciplinary academic background has provided me with a broad set of skills that are
extremely applicable to consulting. Through graduate coursework in health economics and
management including Cost Effectiveness &Decision Making, Global Health
Economics and Negotiations, I havegained insightful perspectives on solving difficult health care
questions.

The Boston Consulting Group has stood out to me because of its strong sense of a team culture
and wonderful opportunities it provides for personal growth and development. I believe that my
education and experience will enable me to make significant contributions not only to BCG , but
more importantly, to the clients you serve. Thank you for your time and consideration, I look
forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Clifford P. Angel

Dear Westat Recruiter:

I am writing to express my interest in the Clinical Research Associate position in Rockville, MD

which was posted on Westat’s Career Opportunities website. In May 2014 I will graduate from
the Yale School of Public Health with a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology of Microbial
Diseases.

Your need for a Clinical Research Associate is a close fit with my research experiences at the
Arizona Burn Center and the Arizona Laboratories Division of Neurobiology (ALDN). During
my time conducting clinical research at the Arizona Burn Center, I collaborated with physicians
to develop IRB-approved protocols, investigated the outcomes of nerve regeneration among burn
patients, and evaluated burn scoring systems for medical diagnoses. My work at ALDN
involved collecting and analyzing complex datasets, a skill that will be very valuable to the
Clinical Research Associate position.

I am excited at the prospect of working for Westat, a company known for its high standards in
quality research and program evaluation. The enclosed resume provides further details of my
academic background and professional experience, particularly my strong training in
biochemistry, data management, biostatistics, and clinical trials.
