If taking the train from the city center, your stop will be the Oriente Station,

Calatrava's transport hub built for the Expo and serving as its arrival point.
You’ll arrive at the upper level, covered by a translucent roof composed of a
reticulated roof structure which gave the station its fame. It is beautiful, light
and bright, a real welcoming gesture to the arriving passengers. The lower
levels, however, impressed me the most. Composed of five identical concrete
bridge structure, spanning a total of 80m wide and 260m long, these vaulted
spaces are at the same time extremely contrasting to the lightness above and
so fitting to the whole language of the building. The shapes formed by the
symmetries in the structure curiously lead you through the spaces in a fluid
and natural manner. Low ceiling corridors give way to great halls semi-
enclosed under the station's structure

an mai tarziu. Statia a fost deschisa oficial in 19 mai 1998.

CONCEPT
Design-ul este o fuziune intre goticul classic si modernism. The Estação do Oriente was
constructed as one of the centrepieces for Expo ‘98, and its design is a fusion between
classic Gothic architecture and striking modernism
The Estação do Oriente train station was constructed as the main passenger terminus
for Expo ‘98 show. The organizing committee invited designers to submit plans for the
multi-tier station that could also act as an exhibit hall during the exposition; this is why
the complex contains so much open space.
The Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava was selected in 1994 and construction
started a year later. The station was officially opened on the 19th May 1998 two months
before the start of Expo 98.

ANALIZA CONTEXTULUI URBAN

The Oriente Station is one of the world’s largest stations, with 75 million passengers per
year, making it as busy as Grand Central Terminal in New York.
The station is a hub of trade, at various levels, different means of transportation: train, bus,
subway and taxi. Access, both east and west, make the building an important hinge in the
urban fabric, capable of uniting the two sides separated by the city before the train tracks
and connects the metropolitan area and the suburbs.

. There are vast sweeping concrete arches inspired by gothic cathedrals, while the high
vaulted metal latticework adds the futuristic element to the station’s appearance. Being
over 20 years, the Estação do Oriente is starting to show its age, but it is still a
magnificent building and will impresses tourists passing through.
