1
Topic: Identify the possible research area of your interest giving general idea and brief
introduction.
Question1:
What are the different topics, in your opinion, in which research could be conducted?
Write two- three topics. (Say, for a students working in resort design can do research on
trends in resorts design, historically significant resorts, Psychology of resorts visitors, Safety
and security in modern day Resorts etc.)
Answer:
The possible research area that interests me is providing schools in villages. The overall
idea of providing education to each kid in the country interests me. As per the 2012
statistics, the total adult literacy rate in India is only 62.8%. In India today, 4% of our
children never start school. 58% don’t complete primary schools. And 90% don’t
complete school.
I personally feel that the first step to the nation’s growth is educating one and all. And
since the education facilities in rural areas are way less as compared to the cities, I
would like to focus here. My research would include finding ten rural areas where the
need of educational facilities is really felt, and shortlisting down to the most desperate
area and giving proposals to them.

The different topics in my opinion where research would be needed are, statistics of
children in a rural setup and possibility of the school becoming a success, psychology of
villagers, residential possibilities for faculty that come from cities to teach students,
vernacular architecture of the area for design, involvement of local people during
design and construction, material available in the local area and transportation
facilities for the school ex. buses and cars and sustainability of the design.

Question 2:
How each topic will help the discipline and profession?
Write one or two paragraphs on each topic for possible directions of the research and
expected possible outcomes and how it will add to knowledge of the discipline and
profession. Describe the nature (basic or applied) of the research.
Answer:
STATISTICS OF CHILDREN IN A RURAL SETUP: Only once we know the number of children
in an area, would the outcome be known. For example, in an area, where we mostly
have just grown-ups who are too busy in their profession, the idea of a school may
never get viral. Hence a lot depends on the percentage of children in the rural setup.
Purpose: To study the number of uneducated children in a rural setup
Basic Research: Study of existing infrastructure and database of previous literacy graphs
Applied Research: Survey of inhabitants
Possible outcomes: The area may have educated children needing no school, or
uneducated children needing this infrastructure.

PSYCHOLOGY OF VILLAGERS: A lot depends on how the people in the rural setup react
to the idea of providing schooling to their children. Many a times, one questions as to
why you are taking so much interest in their kids. Maybe a good way to understand this
would be to take a survey, through which we could know the mindset of people. To
make them understand the need of schooling, maybe a camp should be organized
where experts are called for, who can interact with the local people and explain to
them the aim and purpose of the entire process.
Purpose: to study mind set of villagers to know if they are in the favour of this facility
Basic Research: Prior research done on that area, or views of people who have visited
the village.
Applied Research: Survey of inhabitants
Possible outcomes: Inhabitants may or may not be in the favour of providing schooling
to their children or family members.

RESIDENTIAL POSSIBILITIES FOR FACULTY: For the functioning of the school, initially we
would need teachers coming from cities to teach students and train elders, in-case
they want to teach the kids subjects varying from their local religion, culture, agriculture
etc. So in this scenario, residential facilities would have to be provided for the faculty
that comes to the rural setup. If a guest-house facility is not available in the rural setup,
then one would also have to design hostels close to the school.
Purpose: To give temporary lodging to staff that comes to the villages to teach children
or hold a camp with them.
Basic Research: Study of existing infrastructure, if the village has any guest house and if
yes then how many guests can it hold at a given time.
Applied Research: Survey of the area involved
Possible outcomes: The village may or may not require a lodging building to come up.

LOCAL ARCHITECTURE: Modern architecture in a rural setup would look too out of place
and would always feel alien to the kids studying in the school. Hence a good study
needs to be done in the local architecture, with a good study of the local materials
and the construction style and techniques.
Purpose: To study the local techniques of building and materials used.
Basic Research: Study of building typology of the area
Applied Research: Survey of existing buildings, and seeing a building being built.
Possible outcomes: Greater knowledge of the building style of the area.

TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES: Not just transportation but also the infrastructure needs to
be studied into. Transportation facilities would be important because we would have
teachers from cities frequently travelling, and if the rural setup is in an area that no
roads can access then it would create a problem. Also for the initial construction phase
materials would need to be transferred from one place to another, which would require
proper roads.
Purpose: To study the existing infrastructure that would be needed for providing
transportation
Basic Research: Study of bus patterns, and speaking to people travelling to those areas
Applied Research: Survey of the existing infrastructure and views of the people
Possible outcomes: Need for betterment of the road facility.
INVOLVEMENT OF LOCAL PEOPLE DURING DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION: In any given
project, success can be met only when people of that area equally contribute and
participate in the project. When designers take their views on how they want to live in a
given space and design accordingly, only then will that space be used by the
inhabitants.
Purpose: To involve the local people in their views of the project and in construction
Basic Research: Knowing the basic mind-set of the people, to know if they are proud of
their construction style/practices.
Applied Research: Survey of inhabitants and telling them the importance of their
participation
Possible outcomes: Involvement of local people in the project, leading to success of
the project!
