Exercise # 3

DR. JOSE RIZAL: A FULLY FUNCTIONING PERSON

1. Research and define the terms “fully functioning person” and “healthy personality”.

 A fully functioning person is one who has embraced “existentialliving”. In

other words, they are able to live fully in the moment. They experience a
sense of inner freedom and embraced creativity, excitement, and
challenges. Healthy personality is manifested by individuals who have
been able to gratify their basic needs through acceptable behavior such
that their own personality is no longer a problem to their self.

2. Enumerate and explain the characteristics of a fully functioning person.

 A growing openness to experience having a growing openness to

experience is about moving away fromn defensiveness.
 An increasingly existential lifestyle we tend to filter our experiences
through the lens of what we already believe about ourselves and the
world, usually in a way that confirms these beliefs.
 Increasing organismic trust basically, self-trust. This is about trusting our
judgement and our ability to behave appropriately in any given situation.
 Freedom of choice when we trust our internal process and our external
behaviour, we develop a greater freedom of choice.
 Creativity with the freedom to be ourselves and the self-trust that
underpins this freedom, we are able to be more creative. As Rogers
points out, we can also be more creative in the way we adapt to our
circumstances without feeling a need to conform to norms and values
that conflict with our own.
 Reliability and constructiveness to me, this suggestion is about balancing
our inner and outer worlds. Rogers describes this as being open to all our
needs and able to maintain a balance between them. His belief is that
when people have a congruent view of themselves (i.e. one in which their
self-worth, self-image and ideal self overlap rather than exist as separate
entities), even aggressive needs are matched by an intrinsic goodness
within the person.
 A rich full life Rogers suggests the “fully-functioning” individual
experiences joy and pain, love and heartbreak, fear and courage more
intensely. This reminds me of what Brené Brown writes about how we
can’t selectively cut ourselves off from certain experiences: when we
numb so-called negative emotions, we numb everything. Opening
ourselves up to a rich, full life means receiving the full gamut of human
experience—the good, the “bad” and the challenging. And this isn’t easy.
As Rogers writes in On Becoming a Person: “This process of the good life
is not, I am convinced, a life for the faint-hearted. It involves the
stretching and growing of becoming more and more of one's
potentialities. It involves the courage to be. It means launching oneself
fully into the stream of life.”

3. Compare a person with a healthy personality and a person with unhealthy

personality.

• A healthy person is one who shows the normal behaviour in terms of eating,
talking and while walking. A person who has sense of humor and can show the
emotional sensitivity will be considered healthy. But if a person who got the high score
in neuroticism trait, will be considered as unhealthy in terms of the psychology.
4. Review in the picture in a newspaper/magazine, choose a picture which could
symbolize the functioning of an individual with a healthy personality. Cut and paste the
picture on the space provided and why you choose it.

 I choose this picture because it shows here that she is a healthy

person. You cannot joihn a beauty contest/ pageant if you’re not
totally a healthy person. If you join a beauty contest you should have
the qualities of a healthy person, because you will be the one who
model yourself to others.

5.Compare Dr. Jose Rizal’s characteristics of a fully functioning person. Did he have a
healthy personality? Explain and support your answers with specific examples.

• Yes, because he experience to be far away from his family just to defend his
fellow Filip-inos, he also have a confidence and trust himself, creativity by using his
intelligence, reliabilty and constructiveness.

6.Compare your own personality characteristics of a fully functioning person. Do you

have all the characteristics of a person with a healthy personality if your answer is no,
what do you intend to do about it?
 No, I don’t have a healthy personality because sometimes I cannot
control my angerness, anxiety, vulnerability, self-conciousness and our
depression. But all I have to do about it is to try hard to control and be
positive in every aspects of negativity.

7. What are the beneficial effects if majority of Filipino citizen will be able to develop a
healthy personality?

 The beneficial effects if majority of Filipino citizen will be able to

develop a healthy personality there will be a possibilty that we will be
in peace, united, unanimous, and amicable. We will having a wonderful
society/ country.

good; but that when the motivation is materialistic, it is bad. Well, I’m going to
