The bar chart illustrates the percentages of waste
being recycled, abandoned to landfill or incinerated in various European countries.
It is clear that landfill sites are the most popular
method of waste disposal among EU countries in general compare to incineration or other methods. Only two countries recycle at least half of the rubbish.
All the fifteen countries dispose rubbish to landfill
sites, while half of them, for example UK, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Finland have 50% above of waste disposed to landfill. Greece leaves the most rubbish to landfill, followed by Ireland, with percentages 90% and 85% respectively. Both countries recycle 10% of rubbish and do not have incinerators.
Austria is the most environmentally friendly country
with 63% of waste recycled. Belgium also shares similar recycle trend that 50% rubbish are sent to recycling companies.
