REACTION PAPER ON MODERN THEORIES OF MANAGEMENT

Management is the process of designing and maintaining an environment for the

purpose of efficiently accomplishing selected aims. Managers carry out the functions of
planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling. Managing is an essential activity
at all of the organizational levels. However, the managerial skills required vary with
organizational levels.

Although women have made progress in obtaining responsible positions, they

still have a long way to go. The goal of all managers is to create a surplus and to be
productive by achieving a favorable output-input ration within a specific time period with
due consideration for quality. Productivity implies effectiveness (achieving of objectives)
and efficiency (using the least amount of resources). Managing as practice is art;
organized knowledge about management is science.

The development of management theory involves the development of concepts,

principles, and techniques. There are many theories about management, and each
contributes something to our knowledge of what managers do. Each approach or theory
has its own characteristics and advantages as well as limitations. The operational, or
management process, approach draws on each "school" and systematically integrates
them.

Finally, the organization is an open system that operates within and interacts with
the environment. The systems approach to management includes inputs from the
external environment and from claimants, the transformation process, the
communication system, external factors, outputs, and a way to reenergize the system.
No doubt, a manager who makes serious attempts to translate theory into reality is
bound to increase productivity more than a manager who chooses to use the ‘fire
brigade’ or trial and error approach.

REACTION PAPER ON COMPENSATION AND REWARDS- DETERMINANTS AND

APPROACH

Compensation is an interesting area in human resource to study. In the modern

workplace, compensation is very important as it aims at improving job satisfaction and
also the staff morale. Incentives tend to raise the self-esteem of the workers and at the
same time make the workers be proud of the organization they are working for.

Provision of incentives day in day out helps to attract more qualified personnel to
the company which will, in turn, raise the company competitiveness in the market.
Benefits that are often directed to the workers is also important when it comes to
propagating staff morale. Attending to the employees in the appropriate manner will
help to attract more qualified staff to the organization and also help to retain the existing
staff altogether.

The reward approach not only takes care of the financial security of the
employees but also looks after the overall development of their employees in the
society. It's a delicate matter that should be perfectly balanced especially when the
organization is rewarding different people working in one team.

The key to make this reward system to be successful one is to make sure
employees understand the difference, the advantages and the importance of both
financial and non-financial rewards. Financial rewards such as bonuses may motivate
the employee temporarily and maybe come in handy in times like this but non-financial
rewards stay in the employee’s mind forever. Not only have these kinds of rewards
made them feel valued but also increase their morale and their motivation.
