FINAL COURSE REFLECTION INSTRUCTIONS

In your composition notebook, write a thoughtful, 4-6 page response to the following prompt.
As you outline and write, consider the course as a whole, including in-class notes and exercises,
reading material, the major essays, and also our minor assignments (MLA practice, Moodle
work, reading material, etc). Studies show that reflecting on your writing process can greatly aid
you in becoming a better writer, and a more effective student. Consider how your skills have
changed and your writing has adapted or grown during the course of the class.
To earn full credit, be as specific as possible. Give examples to illustrate your ideas, and lend
your writing a thoughtful, reflective tone. As always, be sure your ideas are organized and
clearly expressed. This writing will be collected with your completed composition notebook, on
our final day of class.
Discuss most or all of the following questions:
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE AND METHODS:
• Please describe your previous knowledge of writing and rhetoric before this course
began. How did your thinking change as the course progressed?
• Please describe your writing process before this course, and the process(es) you used
during the course. How, specifically, has your writing process (as well as your habits and
rituals for writing or studying) changed over this term?

DURING OUR CLASS WORK:
• How do you develop topic ideas for your projects?
• What pre-writing activities do you use (outlining, etc)? Be specific.
• How do you approach the first draft?
• What feedback have you received on your drafts? (Feedback may include interaction
with peers, your instructor, or the writing center.)
• How do you choose to revise your drafts? How do you make tough decisions when it
comes to adding or deleting material?
• How do you feel about the research process? What types of sources had you used in the
past, and how has your research process changed during this class?
• Did anything surprise you about the kinds of research you were asked to do in this class?
• How do you choose sources? How do you know which are useful and which aren't?
• How do these sources contribute to the development of your paper?

WRAPPING IT UP:
• What do you think will be your next step, as you mature as a researcher? What is your
key challenge?
• Overall, what have been the most meaningful changes you've made to your writing style
and process during this term? (Consider the process, your audience as you wrote, use
of rhetorical strategies, organization, etc.)
• How does your understanding of "the rhetorical situation" for a writing assignment
affect your approach to writing now?
