A MINI-LINK TN Network Element (NE) can, from a hardware and installation

point of view, be divided into two parts:

• Indoor part

• Outdoor part

From a functional and configuration point of view, an NE can be divided into

the following parts:

Basic Node The Basic Node holds the system platform providing
traffic and system control, such as traffic routing,
multiplexing, protection mechanisms and management
functions.

It also provides traffic interfaces, PDH, SDH and

Ethernet, for connection to network equipment such as a
radio base station, ADM or LAN.

Finally, it includes indoor mechanical housing, power

distribution and cooling.

The indoor part consists of an Access Module Magazine (AMM) with plug-in
units interconnected via a backplane. One plug-in unit occupies one slot in the
AMM. The AMM fits into standard 19" or metric racks and cabinets.

The following text introduces the standard indoor units and their main
functions. For each unit there exist several types with different properties.

Access Module Houses the plug-in units and provides backplane

Magazine (AMM) interconnection of traffic, power and control
signals.

Node Processor Handles the system's main traffic and control

Unit (NPU) functions. Does also provide traffic and
management interfaces.

Line Termination A plug-in unit that provides PDH or SDH traffic

Unit (LTU) interfaces.

Modem Unit (MMU) The indoor part of a Radio Terminal.

This plug-in unit determines the traffic capacity and
modulation scheme of the Radio Terminal.

Power Filter Unit Filters the external power and distributes the
(PFU) internal power to the plug-in units via the
backplane.

Fan Unit (FAU) Provides cooling for the indoor part.

The indoor part also includes cables and installation accessories.

The interconnection between the outdoor part (Radio Units and antennas)
and the indoor part is one coaxial cable per MMU carrying full duplex traffic,
DC supply voltage, as well as operation and maintenance data.

2.2 Outdoor Part

The outdoor part is supplied for various frequency bands. It consists of an

antenna, a Radio Unit (RAU) and associated installation hardware. For
protected (1+1) systems, two RAUs and one or two antennas are used. When
using one antenna, the two RAUs are connected to the antenna using a
power splitter.

The RAU and the antenna are easily installed on a wide range of support
structures. The RAU is fitted directly to the antenna as standard, integrated
installation. The RAU and the antenna can also be fitted separately and
connected by a flexible waveguide. In all cases, the antenna is easily aligned
and the RAU can be disconnected and replaced without affecting the antenna
alignment.

LINK E ETSI Product Catalogue (EN/LZT 712 0191).

5.1.1 AMM 2p

The mandatory plug-in unit is NPU

LTU 12x2 is used in the half-height slot.

5.1.2 AMM 6p

The mandatory plug-in units are:

• PFU
• FAU
• NPU

Protected MMU and LTU 155 must be placed together in slots, starting at
even numbers.

5.1.3 AMM 20p

The mandatory plug-in-unit is NPU and PFU.

The half-height slots are reserved for PFU1. One PFU1 is mandatory, but an
extra PFU1 can be mounted providing redundant power feeding.

Protected MMU and LTU 155 must be placed together, starting at even
numbers.

5.2 Traffic Routing

The main function of the MINI-LINK TN is to aggregate traffic carried on traffic

interfaces in the Basic Node from many sites into higher capacity
transmission links.

All traffic interfaces are multiplexed or de-multiplexed to E1s, which are cross-
connected by the Basic Node.

The STM-1 interface supports the SDH multiplexing structure AU-4/VC-

4/TUG-3/TUG-2/VC-12. It terminates 63 VC-12’s and supports asynchronous
mapping of E1’s into VC-12’s.

The Basic Node AMM 2p also support mapping of Ethernet traffic into a
number of E1 lines. The capacity is selectable from 1 to 16 E1’s.

5.3 Traffic Protection

The MINI-LINK network provides several mechanisms for high network

reliability.

The following table summarizes how the MINI-LINK TN can support different
types of protection strategies.

Protection types
Type of Mechanisms provided
protection
Redundancy Duplicated
• Busses for Cross Connection (AMM 6p &
AMM 20p)
• Power (AMM 20p)
• Fan
Link protection 1+1 E1 SNCP
MSP 1+1 for STM-1 connections
Network 1+1 E1 SNCP
protection SNCP used in ring topology

The Basic Node has an architecture with separate busses for traffic and
control signals. This separation means that in most cases the traffic will
continue (but without redundancy) when there is failure in the control system.

5.4 Traffic Performance

5.4.1 E1 cross-connect performance

The MINI-LINK TN provides a switching capacity of 820 Mbit/s, which enables

non-blocking switching of approximately 400 E1 interfaces. The traffic
connections are asynchronous and with independent timing.

The free running frequency of 2048 Kkbit/s is ± 50 ppm taken 10 years aging
into consideration.

The Basic Node delay, interface to interface, on unstructured connections is

less than 650 µs.

5.6 Loops

Loops can be used to verify that the transmission system is working properly
or they can be used to locate a faulty unit or interface.

The following loops are available on all plug-in units that carry traffic (NPU,
LTU, and MMU).

Connection This loop can be initiated for an E1 or STM-1 (63xE1).

Loop Each E1 in the traffic connection is looped in the TDM bus
back to its origin. If an E1 interface is traffic routed an AIS
is sent to the other interface in the traffic routing.

A Connection Loop can be used in combination with a

BERT in another NE to test a network connection
including the termination plug-in unit, in case a Local
Loop cannot be used due to the lack of a traffic routing.

Rx Loop This loop is similar to the Connection Loop but the loop is
done in the plug-in unit close to the TDM bus, where a
group of E1s in the traffic connection is looped back to its
origin

The following loops are available on plug-in units with an E1 or STM-1 line
interface (NPU and LTU).

Line Loop Loops an incoming line signal back to its origin. The loop
is done in the plug-in unit, close to the line interface. An
AIS is sent to the TDM bus.

A Line Loop in combination with a BERT in an adjacent

NE is used to test the transmission link between the two
NEs.

Local Loop Loops a line signal received from the TDM bus back to its
origin. The loop is done in the plug-in unit. An AIS is sent
to the line interface.

A Local Loop in combination with a BERT in another NE

can be used to test a connection as far as possible in the
looped NE.

Automatic switching can be in hot standby or in working standby (frequency

diversity). Receiver switching in space diversity systems is hitless.

In hot standby mode, one transmitter is working while the other one is
standby, that is not transmitting but ready to transmit if the active transmitter
malfunctions. Both RAUs are receiving signals and the best signal is used
according to an alarm priority list.

In working standby mode, both radio paths are active in parallel using
different frequencies.

Radio terminals transmit on one composite channel

• Bi-directional asynchronous PDH traffic channel(s) with associated
stuffing control
• Data communication channels with associated stuffing control
• Internal control channels

Incorporated in the composite stream are also information to support framing

BER-measurement, FEC etc.

6.2 Radio Functionalities

6.2.1 Radio frequencies

Within the restrictions on channel arrangement and subranging imposed by

the different Microwave Units (within the RAU) the channel frequency can be
selected from the O&M system.

Frequency band and subrange, as well as lowest, highest and selected

channel frequency is readable from the O&M system.

Radio Terminals operate with the following channel spacing:

• 3.5 MHz for 2x2 Mbit/s
• 7 MHz for 4x2 Mbit/s C-QPSK and 8x2 Mbit/s 16QAM
• 14 MHz for 8x2 Mbit/s C-QPSK and 17x2 Mbit/s 16QAM
• 28 MHz for 17x2 Mbit/s C-QPSK and 32x2 16QAM

RAUs are produced for frequency bands, subranges and channel plans
according to tables below.

Frequencies can be selected in 0.25 MHz steps, except for Radio Terminals
with RAU1 8 or RAU1 N 8 that have an extended frequency resolution of
0.025 MHz steps for index 11-18.

6.2.4 Transmit Power

It is possible to turn the transmit power on/off controlled by:

• O&M system (locally or remotely)
• 1+1 protection logic to support hot standby operation

Moreover the output power level can be stepwise selected, from O&M, on site
(this function is not available on Radio Terminals with RAU1 26 with standard
output power).

Optionally, it is possible to equip the Radio Terminal with RAU1 with fixed
and/or mechanically adjustable attenuators to extend the electronically
adjustable range.

6.2.5 Loops

The following loops on the near-end Radio Terminal are supported in order to
find out if the RAU or MMU is faulty.

IF Loop In the MMU the traffic signal to be transmitted is, after

being modulated, mixed with the frequency of a local
oscillator and looped back for demodulation (on the
receiving side).

RF Loop In the RAU a fraction of the RF signal transmitted is

shifted in frequency and looped back to the receiving
side.

In addition the Rx Loop can be used to verify the communication over the
radio path.

6.2.6 Radio Section Protection

6.2.6.1 Configurations

All configurations giving radio section protection are based on the same RAUs
and MMUs as used for unprotected terminals.

Hot-standby operation:

• Both transmitters are tuned to same frequency.

• One transmitter is active and the other is in standby.
• Both receivers are active and tuned to the same radio frequency.
• This configuration is capable of providing hitless (error free) switching at
fading conditions.
• Switching (receiver and/or transmitter) due to hardware failures
is non-hitless.
• Two antennas are used for space diversity.
• One or two antennas may be used for hot standby.

Working-standby operation:

• Transmitters are tuned to different frequencies.

• Both transmitters are active.
• Both receivers are active and tuned to the corresponding transmitted
frequencies.
• This configuration is capable of providing hitless (error free) receiver
switching at fading conditions.
• Switching (receiver and/or transmitter) due to hardware failures
is non-hitless.

6.2.6.2 Receiver Selection

The below given receiver selection criteria applies to both working

standby/frequency diversity and hot standby/space diversity.

Two modes of operation are available:

• Manual mode, with receiver selection controlled manually through the

O&M system (locally and remotely).

• Automatic mode, with receiver selection controlled by locally generated

receiver alarms and status signals.

In the event of automatic mode operation receiver changeover (propagation

protection) due to fading is hitless (error free). Receiver selection is based on
locally generated receiver alarms and status signals and monitored through
the O&M system.

In the event of automatic mode operation and hardware failure, the receiver
with the lowest alarm criticality is selected (hardware protection). The order of
criticality is defined as follows:

1. No RAU/MMU inserted (most critical)

2. Traffic-affecting hardware failure identified.

3. Non-traffic-affecting hardware failure identified (least critical)

Receiver selection is based on locally generated receiver alarms.

6.2.6.3 Transmitter Selection

Transmitter selection only applies to hot standby/space diversity system.

Two modes of operation are available:

1. Manual mode, with transmitter selection controlled manually through the

O&M system (locally and remotely).

2. Automatic mode, with transmitter selection controlled by locally generated

transmitter alarms and status signals or by request from remote end
receivers.

The operating mode is controlled and monitored through the O&M system.
Automatic mode is default mode of operation.

In the event of automatic mode operation and hardware failure, the

transmitter with the lowest alarm criticality is selected (hardware protection).
The order of criticality is defined as follows:

1. No RAU/MMU inserted (most critical)

2. Traffic-affecting hardware failure identified.

3. Non-traffic-affecting hardware failure identified (least critical)

Transmitter changeover is not required to be hitless (traffic interrupts are

allowed).

Transmitter selection is based on locally generated transmitter alarms and

status signals.

6.2.7 Transmission Performance

The performance of the Radio Terminal is measured and logged based on the
ITU-T Rec G 826. In case of protected operation the performance estimate
refers to the performance of the protected path.

6.7 Received Signal Indication

6.7.1 For Path Acceptance

When measured in steady state condition an RF-input level measure is given

with an accuracy of ± 2 dB for RF-input levels -30 dBm to -60 dBm and ± 3
dB for RF-input levels -60 dBm to -80 dBm

6.7.2 For Antenna Alignment

This detector presents on an external standard voltmeter a voltage

corresponding to RF-input level, roughly logarithmic.

Accuracy: The accuracy of the measured voltage converted to RF-input

level using standard diagram shall be within ± 2.5 dB for RF-
input levels -30 dBm to -60 dBm and ± 3 dB for RF-input levels
–60 dBm to -80 dBm when measured at the RAU testpoint.

7 Power Supply
AMM 2p has the DC input located on the NPU2

AMM 6p has the DC input located on the PFU2.

In AMM 20p there is one DC input per PFU1, and FAU1 needs a separate
power input.

7.1 DC Supply Interface

The AMM 20p and AMM 6p provides DC supply interfaces through the front of
the PFU units. The AMM 2p has the DC interface on the NPU2.

FAU1 needs a separate power supply, if an interface panel is not used.

The power is floating, i.e. not connected to station ground.

The connector on the power cable provides spike protection.

7.2 Supply voltage

An external DC/DC converter shall be used when 24V input voltage is

required for AMM 6p and AMM 20p.

7.3 Input under voltage protection (all plug-in units) and supervision

(Supervision is applicable for PFU1)

The –48 V input voltage is supervised, and if the potential falls below –40.5 V,
an alarm is generated and the current is turned off. The under voltage
protection function releases if the input voltage comes back.

7.4 Soft start (all plug-in units) and electronic fuse

The soft start and electronic fuse limits inrush currents at start up, or currents
in case of short circuit. This protection feature is activated faster than the blow
fuse, which is the final security function. Thus, the blow fuse is only used if the
electronic fuse is faulty.

For 24 V power feeding the blow fuse will also protect against short circuits
from +24V to chassis.

The electronic fuse is latching, and must be manually reset by switching the
power off and on.

8 Cooling
A Fan Unit provides forced cooling of the magazines and circuit boards. The
units continue operation with one failed fan. If the cooling then is insufficient,
the thermal management function will prevent the damage of the Basic Node.

When several magazines are mounted in rack, each magazine will have
independent cooling.

AMM 2p The Fan Unit, FAU4, with three fans is located within the
magazine. Cooling airs enters from the right and exits at the left
of the magazine.

The Fan Unit may be omitted when the total dissipated power
within the magazine is less than 45 W and a 1U space is
located above the magazine.

If a MMU2 is used in the AMM2p a FAU4 is needed.

AMM 6p A Fan Unit, FAU2, with two fans must be located within the
magazine. Cooling air enters from the front and exits at the rear
of the magazine.

There must be at least 30 mm free space behind the magazine

for sufficient airflow. If the space is less than 30 mm, a free
space of 1U should be left above the magazine.

AMM 20p Cooling air enters from the front, below the magazines. The air
flows out at the top of the magazine. A Fan Unit, FAU1, with
three fans can be located above the magazine.

The Fan Unit may be omitted when the cabinet provides a

cooling airflow of at least 130 m3/h and the temperature of the
incoming air is less than 45 °C.

An optional Air Guide can be mounted above the Fan Unit to

lead the air out at the back.

If several magazines are mounted in the same rack, a cable

shelf in one magazine will act as an air guide for the magazine
below.

The fan units have one green LED and one red LED. The green is lit when
power is on. The red is lit when a fan failure is detected.

8.1.1 Fan Alarm Interface

The PFU1 fan alarm interface is a male 8 pin SOFIX connector.

The two FAU1 alarm interfaces to PFU1 are 8 pin SOFIX connectors.
