Introduction
When managing a switch, the Management Domain is always VLAN 1. The Network
Administrator's workstation must have access to a port in the VLAN 1 Management
Domain. All ports are assigned to VLAN 1 by default. This lab will also help demonstrate
how VLANs can be used to separate traffic and red uce broadcast domains

Procedure
Step 3 Verify connectivity

a. Was the ping successful?

Yes, the pings were successful.
Step 4 Show the IOS version

a. What version of the switch IOS is displayed?

IOS (tm), Version 12.1(22)EA4, RELEASE SOFTWARE(fc1).

b. Does this switch have standard edition or Enterprise edition

software? It has a standard edition.

c. What is the Firmware version of the switch?

C2950 Software (C2950-I6Q4L2-M).

Step 7 Display the VLAN interface information

a. Are there new VLANs in the

listing?
Yes, VLAN2 & VLAN3.

Step 11 Look at the VLAN interface information

a. Is port 3 assigned to VLAN 3?
Yes, it is assigned to VLAN 3.
b. Is the port still listed in the default VLAN?
No, because it is assigned to VLAN 3.

Home Task
Q.1 What is VLAN and why it is used?

A VLAN (virtual LAN) is a subnetwork which can group together collections of devices
on separate physical local area networks (LANs). VLANs make it easy for network
administrators to partition a single switched network to match the functional and security
requirements of their systems without having to run new cables or make major changes
in their current network infrastructure. VLANs are also important because they can help
improve the overall performance of a network by grouping together devices that
communicate most frequently.

Q.2 Identify the advantages VLAN has over physical LAN.

VLANs provide several advantages, such as ease of administration, confinement of
broadcast domains, reduced broadcast traffic, and enforcement of security policies.
VLANs provide the following advantages:
• VLANs enable logical grouping of end-stations that are physically dispersed on a
network.
• VLANs reduce the need to have routers deployed on a network to contain broadcast
traffic.
• Flooding of a packet is limited to the switch ports that belong to a VLAN.
• Confinement of broadcast domains on a network significantly reduces traffic.
• By confining the broadcast domains, end-stations on a VLAN are prevented from
listening to or receiving broadcasts not intended for them.

Q.3 Differentiate between Broadcast domain & Collision domain?

A collision occurs when two devices send a packet at the same time on the shared
network segment. Each port on a bridge, a switch or router is in a separate collision
domain. A broadcast domain is a domain in which a broadcast is forwarded.
Q.4 Identify the difference between access and trunk link.
A trunk link is not assigned to a specific VLAN. The access links are part of only one
VLAN and carry traffic to only the end devices connected to that VLAN. But a trunk link
is used to connect switches to other switches or to routers and can carry traffic from
multiple VLANs
