Grade Score Criteria

Outstanding The “Outstanding” Poem is outstanding in every way. The poem is well structured and all lines
are coherent. It begins with a good opening or introduction that contains a clear theme, is
(90-100) followed by stanzas that contain clear sentences with clear imagery and rhetorical devices, and
ends with a clear message. Content is complete and lacking in no area. There are no (or few)
errors in genre, spelling, tone, format, grammar, and content.
Excellent The “Excellent” Poem is above average in most of its parts. In the parts where it is not
comparable to some solid parts, it is still entirely acceptable. The majority of the poem is
(80- 89) coherent, structured, clear, focused, but there may be a few parts that requires light editing and
concise word choice. although it may contain some errors with genre, spelling, tone, format,
grammar, and content. these mistakes are not too much enough to affect from the overall
message and point being made.
Good The “Good” Poem is adequate in most areas, but exceptional in none. The message is clear
although probably lacking in both control and command. Organization may be a slight problem
(70 -79) but can be fixed. The lines provide support but are generally underdeveloped. There may be
multiple errors in tone, format, mechanics, grammar, and content, but these errors do not, for
the most part, detract from the overall writing.
Fair The “Fair” Poem is lacking in a majority of areas. It is generally unorganized and unfocused.
The topic is neither clear nor controls the entire poem. Most of the line is underdeveloped. There
(60 - 69) are frequent errors in tone, format, mechanics, grammar, and/or content that distract from the
content being provided. Its only saving grace is that, despite all of the errors, there appears to be
a legitimate effort put forth by the writer.
Poor The “Poor” Poem generally needs further explanation. There are significant problems
throughout. The message is often lacking, and the visual imagery, if there is one, it is vague and
(0 - 59) lack focused and maybe unorganized. The Poem shows no understanding of basic line structure,
coherent stanzas and overall theme, and there are significant errors in tone, format, mechanics,
grammar, and/or content. The effort on the part of the writer is not enough and perceive lacking
in general areas
