Application Essay #3
As my career as a student is quickly coming to an end, I can’t help but remember the
person I was 4 years ago when I began my career at Nichols College. Prior to Nichols, I had
minimal leadership experience. My freshman year was a tough one for me because I had a hard
time getting involved on campus. I believe that the end of the first semester was when I realized I
had potential as a leader. My professor for effective speaking had pulled me aside and
recommended that I applied to be an orientation leader because she thinks it would be a great
position for me. I took her advice and for the following two summers, I was an orientation leader
on campus. Orientation gave me the opportunity to share my love for the school and also allowed
me to be the first friend for the incoming students. Without orientation I would not be the leader
I am today. I learned how to address any type of situation, improve my skills when working in a
team, improved my skills as an individual, and work with every type of student.
Through other experiences on campus and off campus, I have noticed a drastic change in
my confidence and my abilities as a leader. My goal when I graduate is to find a position that
allows me to grow as a leader but is also a position where I am assigned specific tasks that are to
be accomplished by myself. As an aspiring event planner, I know a fair amount about the
industry, and I am hoping to be an event planner that follows the guidance of the event manager.
When it comes to events, organization is key, and an efficient and organized event is best

organization I represent, as well as work with other departments to ensure the satisfaction of the
Someone who is seen as a leader is one who is able to work with others, provides
guidance for those seeking it, solves problems, or finds someone who can solve the problem.
There are many aspects to a successful leader but what makes a great leader is someone who
operates on the basis of working with the 5 practices we learned about in The Student Leadership
Challenge.
By applying those to the industry I am looking to work in, it would make me an efficient
and reliable event planner that is well respected in the industry for many reasons. One example is
a leader who models the way. In event planning, it can get overwhelming being the only planner
but working with those around you and showing them how it’s done could lift some stress off
your shoulders when someone is capable of answering any questions that a client or guest has.
Inspiring a shared vision can make or break an event planner’s reputation. If you are able to take
your clients dream event and make it a reality, it gives you the credit of being a leader that is
capable of working with people as opposed to working for people. Events are challenge
especially since it is inevitable to avoid something going wrong. Through enabling others to act
and encouraging the heart. The joy and success of the event will push others to work with you
and will also improve all leadership skills since you are the one running the show.
