manufacturing in OEM or large scale industries is discussed .

II. Learning objectives:

After the end of the session, the students will be able to

a) Understand the importance of cellular manufacturing (BL2)

b) Compare the traditional manufacturing and cellular manufacturing. (BL4)
c) Summarize the types of machine cells and layouts. (BL5)

III. Content Delivery: (Instructional Strategies)

Summary of Group discussion:

Group discussion on cellular manufacturing held on 28.08.2017. This was conducted to

understand the Importance and advantages of cellular manufacturing .Differentiate the
traditional system and cellular manufacturing system in large scale industries. The
implementation of cellular manufacturing is to improve the part quality and production rate when
compare to traditional manufacturing.

1. Activity
(a) Phase I – Think(5 Minutes) – Importance and advantages of cellular
manufacturing. State the need of cellular manufacturing in Manufacturing
Industries (BL2)
Group discussion on cellular manufacturing held with 58 students on 28.08.2017.
This was conducted to understand the importance and advantages of cellular
manufacturing. Participants provided information in 5 minutes.

The discussion was designed to gather information from the students in regard to the following
outcomes:

1. To understand Importance and advantages of cellular manufacturing .

2. To tell how cellular manufacturing works.
3. To understand how to improve the product quality
4. To tell the importance of production planning and control.
5. To identify the reduction of unit costs.
6. To understand the role of employee involvement
7. To discuss the manufacturing flexibility

Objectives of the activity by the faculty, Mr.K.Umanath

Participant Demographics
The participated students are studying FINAL YEAR MECHANICAL ‘A’
Section. In this GD totally 58 students are participated. In that 1 girl and 57 boys
are participated. The participants are from three categories like that toppers,
average learners and slow learns.
Phase II -Student Perspectives

Outcome 1: a) To Understanding the importance of cellular manufacturing (BL2)

What is necessity of cellular manufacturing in industry?

The students discussed a number of reasons for implementation of cellular manufacturing:

Some of the students are discussed the following points,

 It is a quality improving techniques

 Finished good inventory less technique
 Waste elimination process
 Lead time reduction process
 Reduce setup time

The students had specific reasons for choosing a cellular manufacturing:

 Improvement of part or product Quality.

 Reduce more distances /more times

 Reduction of unit cost.

Outcome 2: b) Compare the traditional manufacturing and cellular manufacturing.
(BL4)

What are students’ perceptions of the comparison?

In general, students were extremely positive when talking about the cellular
manufacturing. They used various words to describe their experience of cellular manufacturing
like, “Cellular manufacturing is a process of manufacturing which is a subsection of just-in-
time manufacturing and lean manufacturing encompassing group technology. The goal of
cellular manufacturing is to move as quickly as possible, make a wide variety of similar
products, while making as little waste as possible. Cellular manufacturing involves the use of
multiple "cells" in an assembly line fashion.” They cited a number of the manufacturing method,
including conventional machines,DNC machine,CNC machine and group technology etc. All the
students agreed that the cellular manufacturing has significant advantages, including operator
less, less lead time and less setup time etc.

Outcome 3) c) summarize the types of machine cells and layouts. (BL5)

 How to classify the cellular manufacturing?

Some of the students listed the types of machine cells and layout.

They listed the following types

1.single machine cell

2.Group of cell with manual handling

3.Group of cell with semi integrated handling

4.Flexible manufacturing or Flexible manufacturing system.

Few of the students they pointed the need of machine cell and said”
Manufacturing Cells' Sets of machines that are grouped by the products or parts they
produce in a lean manufacturing environment. The use of manufacturing cells improves
material flow and is especially suited for batch production, even in relatively low
volumes.”

Phase III -Positive Features of cellular manufacturing

They pointed as Cellular manufacturing compared to other traditional manufacturing by

follows.

1. Reduction in setup time

2. Reduction in work in progress

3. Reduction in material handling cost and time

4. Reduction in material flow distance

5. Improvement in machine utilization

6. Reduction in production lead time

7. Improvement in quality

8. Better worker morale

The above mentioned points are discussed by students. The one overwhelmingly positive
attribute mentioned by participants is the part quality. They told that “The cellular
manufacturing, most or all operations occur in one area and among a small team. This focuses
responsibility and motivates the team to avoid similar defects in the future. Feedback on quality
problems is faster and surer thus quality is improved in cellular manufacturing”.

Phase IV-Negative Features of the cellular manufacturing:

Some of the students had negative opinion on cellular manufacturing .so that they are listed
some points.

M.EASWARMOORHY SAID “cellular manufacturing” is a great concept. But all good concepts
do have their own limitations and need proper care in their application, for results to be realized
in practice. Improper implementation and/or half hearted attempts may usually backfire.Setup
times or change over times may not always be significantly reduced just because the
components in the family bear apparent similarity.
Anitha.A shared, the assumptions regarding raw material and work in process
inventories need to be checked during the design of the cells. In a process layout, the machines
share√ a common pool of inventories whereas in an ill-designed cellular system, machines may
require own individual stocks of materials.

Aravind.K told that the improper cell formation whether based on component shapes/features or
on production flow analysis would turn out be in efficient in terms of time, investment and
humanistic aspects.
Balaji .R pointed that the Inadequacies in employee education training and involvement could
come in the way of proper implementation.

Deepakjose.K pointed that Cellular manufacturing is widely used for mass production.
 The one resounding complaint across all groups of
students is investment, skilled education and it takes long time for implementation.
 Several participants commented that there is not
enough or suitable for small and medium industries.

Phase V-Recommended Changes

It is clear from the responses and discussions that students and potential students are
committed to implement of cellular manufacturing is an essential target for industry. Participants
point to other techniques like GT and FMS. Recommended changes fall into three major categories:
low investment, skills improvement, manufacturing flexibility.
Low Investment
Even though implement the cell design concept, which is only for required area.
Skills Improvement
Integration should be user friendly so that we can learn easily.

Manufacturing Flexibility

cell design Implementation is applicable for variety of parts or products.
