Studies on circum annual rhythm of testicular activity in
relation to haematology were inade ona lizard, Varanus flovescens, The
testicular activity and haematological parameters showed parallelism
with humidity and rainfall was found to be most effective.
Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and raintall have beet
reported to play an important role in reproduction of reptiles". In recent yeatt
certain reports are alsy available on the seasonal changes In the blood components @
some Indian reptiles*..However, the information regarding the role of testicula
‘activity .on haomatology of reptiles are rare"-*. The aim uf present. Investigation}
to know the effect of vatious environmental factors (temperature, photoperio!
rainfall and humidity) on the cyclic activity of testis and blood parameters ¢
carnivorous Indian lizard, V. flavescens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Live adult healthy male specimens of V. flavescens of almost same length af
weiaht were procured from local dealer at Bhagalpur during different months of?Haematology of male lizad [145
year. They were acclimatized in laboratory conditions for a week. The animals were
sacrificed on 15th day every month. Specimens were first anaasthatizad and weighed
and measured from snout to vent and vent to tail tip. Pentabarbitone (U.1 mi/1009 body
weight) was used as enaesthesia. Animals were dissected and testis removed and
cleaned properly in saline water. After proper soaking of water with “filter paper,
testis were weighed on electro-monopan balance and fixed in Bouin's fluid,
Sections wore cut at & to7 microns and stained witl laeiutuaylin and Cosin.
The blood samples were collected in a citrated syringe by resorting to
cardiac puncture. Erylluucyle tolal counts were made by Naubaurer’s improved
haemocytometer using haem's diluting fluid", Haemoglobin concentration was
determined by Sahli's haemoglobinometer, Haematocrit was measured by micra~
haematocrit method using micro-haematocrit reader.
Meteriological data of day-length, humidity, rainfall and temperature wore
procured from Bhagalpur Agricultural College, Sabour.
OBSERVATIONS
The testis weight. relative weiaht and histology of the testis showed cyclic changes
in different months of the year. The testicular cycle of this animal can be divided
into four phases such as progressive, peak, regressive and inactive phase.
The maximum relative weight of the testis was noticed in the month of July/
‘Auoust and minimum in the month of December/January. From the month of February
itstarted Increasing in weight which ultimately reached to maximum in the month
of July/August Table 1).
Testis showed progressive condition in the month of May/June, the spermato-
gonia were seen in dividing condition and lumen were becoming narrower. In the
month of June traces of immature spermatozoa were also noticed in the lumen
mostly in peripheral region (Figo. 1, 2.)-Prakash, Thakur & Choubey
