INDIAN LUNACY ACT(1912):-

Indian lunacy act is derived from English lunacy act 1890. Its contains 8 chapters that comes in India.
This act legal aspect of psychiatric based on a ILA.

 Chapter 1st:- Define certain terms used in psychiatric treatment. These terms are-
 Asylum
 Lunatic
 Criminal lunatic
 Reception order
 Relative
 Cost maintenance
 Chapter IInd:- Contains the admission and procedure of psychiatric present in mental hospital:-
 Admission on voluntary basis
 Admission with special circumstance
 Admission on reception order with Petition
 Admission on reception order without petition
 Admission after judicial inquisition
 Admission as mentally ill prisoner
 Chapter lll:-
 Board of visitors:- State government will appointment board of visitors (at least three
members).
 One medical officer, not necessary to have psychiatrist.
 Other two members maybe social workers (care, treatment and discharge procedure)
 Chapter IV:-
 The care of lunatic my family member or relatives.
 Rule for partnership in properties, sale and settlement of properties were also described.
 Chapter V:-Lunatic properties Court amendments for assessing disbursement of properties fine
of 500 will be collected by the manager of lunatic appointed by Court, if he is not properly
maintaining.
 Chapter vi:-
 Establishment of asylum:- Board of visitors has to conduct monthly visit and periodically they
have to observe standard diet, medical check up, parameters and report it to government.
 If asylum are not functioning properly they can cancel the licence of asylum.
 Chapter VII:-
 Expenses of lunatic:- this chapter explain expenses or cost maintenance of patient care and
treatment during stay in hospital.
 Chapter VIII:- It deals with hospital rules and regulations established by mental hospital.
