Narrator 1: Long ago, about 2000 years, when King Herod ruled Judea, God sent the angel Gabriel, to a
young woman who lived in the northern town of Nazareth. She is nowadays known as the Virgin, Mary
and she was engaged to marry Joseph, son of David. They were chosen by God to have his only son,
Jesus.

Narrator 2: The angel said to Mary: 'Peace be with you! God has blessed you and is pleased with you!'
Mary was very surprised by this and wondered what the angel meant. Gabriel said to her 'Do not be
afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with the Lord. Behold you shall conceive a son, and you shall call
him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to
him the throne of his father David.

Narrator 3: Mary was very afraid but she trusted God. “Let it happen as God chooses!” she said.
Meanwhile, Joseph was furious when he found out that Mary was expecting a baby before their marriage.
He wondered if he should put off the wedding.

Narrator 4: Suddenly, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said: “Joseph, son of David, do not
fear to take Mary as your wife, for the child which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” The angel
explained that Mary had been chosen by God to be the mother of his Son. He told Joseph that the baby
would be named Jesus Emmanuel, which means 'Saviour' because he would save people of earth. When
Joseph woke up, he did what the angel asked and took Mary as his wife.

Narrator 5: In those days, Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire
Roman world and everyone went to their own town to register. Joseph also went up from the town of
Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David. Mary went alongside him.
They travelled by donkey a long way from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

Narrator 6: When they reached Bethlehem they could not find a place to stay. Many people had come to
register their names in the census. Every house was full, and every bed was taken in all of the rooms of
every inn. The only place that was available for them to stay was in a barn outside with the animals.

Narrator 7: So, in the place where the animals slept, Mary gave birth to her firstborn son, the Son of
God, and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger. The boy who would grow up to
be our saviour lie sleeping peacefully on a humble bed of hay.

Narrator 8: And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at
night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were
terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy
for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord
Jesus Christ. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Narrator 9: Suddenly a great choir of heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying:
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Narrator 10: When the angels had gone the shepherds said to one another, 'Let's go to Bethlehem to see
what has happened.' So the shepherds went to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph. The baby Jesus
was lying in a manger as they had been told. When they saw him, they told everyone what the angel had
said and everyone who heard the story were astonished. Then the shepherds returned to their sheep,
praising God for sending his Son to be their Saviour.

Narrator 11: That same night, a bright star appeared in the sky. Some Wise Men in faraway countries
saw the star and guessed what it meant. They were very clever men that studied the stars and had read the
old prophecies that a new star would appear when a great king was born. They set out to find the new
king and bring him gifts. The Wise Men followed the star towards Bethlehem. It seemed to stop and shine
directly down upon the place where Jesus lay

Narrator 12:. The Wise Men entered the stable and found Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The Wise Men
placed the gifts they had brought before Jesus. Their gifts were gold, frankincense and myrrh. They knelt
down and worshipped him, for they knew that one day, this tiny baby boy would grow up to save the
world.

Narrator 13: That night, the Wise Men were warned in a dream, by God, not to return to Herod, their
king, for he had plans to destroy the child. So they returned home to their countries in the East by a
different way, and spread the good news of Jesus’ birth to the world!

Can you hear the angels?

Stay standing

Narrator 14: Thousands of years later, we continue to celebrate the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Christians all over the world take time on this glorious day to celebrate and worship our king. Still today,
Christmas Eve marks the tradition of a candlelight service in many churches across the globe. The lights
go down at the end of the service, and as the traditional Silent night plays over us, we take turns lighting
the room up with our lights. This candlelight represents that Jesus is, and always will be, our light, even in
the darkness.

Narrator 15: To honor this tradition tonight, we would like to close our concert in a slightly different
manner, and invite you as not an audience, but a congregation, to join us in our song. Our older choir will
start a melody in the beginning, during this time please light the candles you received upon entry tonight.
Later on the song you will hear the elementary join in with a round of the traditional Silent Night. Please
allow them to sing it once and allow the troubles of this world to slip away and recenter your focus on the
true meaning of Christmas. The candles that you are holding are a representation of the light Jesus
brought into this world. They represent hope, joy, peace, faith, and above all the love of Jesus Christ. As
we sing over you we pray that just for a moment you are able to let go of the shopping, the hustle and
bustle, the stressful relatives, the cooking and the wrapping. Let go of disease and war. Let go of
unforgiveness, bitterness, sadness and fear. Let go of whatever is burdening your heart tonight and give it
to the Lord. When you are ready, we invite you to sing with us when the song repeats the second time,
knowing that nothing in this world is too big or too small to allow for a moment of His heavenly peace.

Peace on this Silent Night
