Safety Hazard Scenarios
Directions: With your group determine ALL the possible consequences of the actions (or inactions) in the
hazard scenarios. Using complete sentences explain and describe what the hazard is (1),
the consequences (2), and what might be done in the scenario instead (3).
Hazard Scenario
1. Cesar spills water on the floor and goes to get a
mop to clean it up. However, he doesn’t tell anyone
else about the spill.
2. Jasmine is pulling a tray of cookies out of the
oven, but instead of pulling the oven rack out, she
reaches in for the tray with one hand.
3. Matt puts out new pot holders and oven mitts and
notices some of them are wearing thing--one even
has a small hole.
4. Damian has just washed his hands but they are
not fully dry when he goes to unplug the toaster.
5. Jessenia is boiling a pot of water for pasta. She
sees steam coming out from under the lid. Just as
she goes to remove the lid Jorge reaches over to stir
the sauce on the back burner.
6. Giselle is in charge of setting the table however
she’s not tall enough to reach the glasses for
beverage service so she climbs on the counter.
Consequences
Caesars spilled water is the hazard, the
consequences that can happen is that someone slips
and breaks there head or neck, and get injured, the
way he could avoid this would be to warm someone
about the spill, or put a caution sign next to the spill.
Jasmine try to grab the tray from the oven instead of
pulling the rack is a hazard, The consequences are
that she could get herself burn marks on her arms
from the metal bars, the best way to avoid this would
be to pull the rack out, so less chance of burning and
then get the tray of cookies out.
The mitts and pot holders that have holes in them are
a complete hazard, because if in the use they could
cause a nasty burn on the wearer where the hole is
at burning you and dropping the object that contains
food, to avoid this from happening, buy some new
mitts or pot holders if you don't want to spend money
find a over mitt or pot holders at your house.
Damian's hands having water on them and wanting
to unplug the toaster is a complete hazard for
Damian, the reason is that water and electricity do
not mix well when someone is standing or covered
with water causing an immediate death, the best way
to avoid this would be to dry your hands and even
your arms completely and then unplug the wire to the
microwave.
The hazard in this scene is Jorge’s impatiens to stir
the sauce on the back burner while Jessenia opening
the lid right was just doing the right thing, The hazard
in this would cause Jorge to get steam burn at his
arm causing him to mess up the sauce and pasta,
Jessenia was doing her job, it's just that Jorge was
an impatient person, the way that Jorge could avoid
this would be to be patient and wait for jessenia to
finish stirring and then stir the sauce.
Giselle trying to grab glasses by climbing on the
counter is a complete hazard, the reason for this
problem is that she could fall off the counter and
smash her head and with her she gets glass falling
on her, the way she could avoid this is by finding a
stepping stool and using it to get the glassware
safely or find someone tall enough to grab the
glassware.
7. Diego is collecting dirty dishes to wash at the end
of the lab. He drops the utensils in the dish water
along with the slicing blade from the food processor.
8. Alanis is frying chicken but doesn’t read the recipe.
As a result she takes the wet chicken out of the
package and drops it directly into a pot of hot oil.
“That’s all fried chicken is, right?”
9. Danny and his group are overwhelmed by the
multi-step Beef Wellington recipe. As a result food
scraps and equipment are beginning to pile up in
their work station--including a knife that is resting
precariously near the edge of the counter.
10. Arelie is the chef in charge during the chocolate
chip cookie lab. She cracks her eggs directly into the
mixer while it is running, and notices a small piece of
eggshell clinging to the side of the bowl. She reaches
in to remove it before it disappears into the batter.
The hazard here would be the food processor in the
water, the reason for this is to try to grab the dishes
with the food processor worst case is that you get a
deep cut and get dirty dish water in the wound, the
best way to avoid this would be to empty the water to
avoid not knowing where the processor is at or call
on the teacher.
The hazard would the oil mixed with water splashing
everywhere, the reason is that oil mixed with water
causes the oil to pop and the oil would splash
everywhere getting on your skin or worse eyes. The
way to avoid this will be to dry the chicken and then
put it in the pot, or read the recipe, or better yet, learn
how to read.
The hazard is the knife sitting on the edge of the
counter, the reason is that some fly boy comes by
looking cool and non sholont, and he ends up cutting
himself or worse someone lays their elbow on the
edge of the knife and it starts flying towards
someone, to avoid this neatly put away your
equipment instead of piling it up.
The hazard is her trying to grab the egg while the
mixer is on, her doing this can cause her finger the
get chopped off by trying to get the egg and breaking
the machine, the best and easiest way to avoid this
would be to turn it off and picking up the shell to
avoid your finger getting chopped and the machine
not breaking.
