Introduction

Prison is a place where there will be a penal sentence period for people who violated the
laws of constitution. In prisons inmates undergo their punishment period and later released
into society. In Indian constituency prisons are of three types the taluka level, district level,
and central level. The jails in these levels are called Sub Jails, District Jails, and Central Jails
respectively. The other types of jail establishments are Women Jails, Borstal Schools, Open
Jails and Special Jails. Over the last few years most of the countries of the world has
experienced a remarkable increase in crime rate.

There is no particular reason for any disorder for criminal activities. Sometimes
society, cultural factors, political influences and law enforcement are responsible for
criminal activities of an individual. Crime rate is growing in India which can be found in
various forms i.e Lack of proper education system, Ineffective law and order systems,
Alcoholism and Drugs, Television, Lack of parent’s care & Poverty etc.
Human psychology requires an interactive zone with other people to develop a basic metal
comfort. If you are denied to social contact, your mind falls apart and leads to psychological
discomfort zone. Architecture is striving to redefine the role of recreating people in our
society. An increasing awareness in the need for communion and basic human psychology in

culture, which is different for normal social life. So based on this study, to design a house of
correction of the inmates on the both sides of bar (inmates & Constitution). The main aim of
this design is to reduce their psychological discomfort experienced in the prison at the time
of their reliving.

Need for study:

Prison and prisoners form a very important part of society which are being neglected or put
aside in considering the development and globalization. With the help of architecture
attempt is to create an environment for those people in house on both sides of the bar
which could create a better living lifestyle and also after effects of this would lead to a
better society as these prisoners have to come back to the social life.
