Overview
The Premium Materials Database contains fatigue properties measured on materials tested at
the ISO-9001 certified Advanced Materials Characterisation and Test Facility owned and oper-
ated by HBM nCode. This unprecedented collection of fatigue properties contains 95 materials,
mostly commonly used types of steel and aluminium, plus some other non-ferrous materials.
The high quality fatigue parameters include statistical estimates of scatter to enable reliability
and certainty of survival to be assessed.
Because HBM nCode recognise the difficulty of producing universally understood names, the
database also includes a list of searchable equivalents.
The comparison of standards from different international organisations is complex. There are
names shared by several standards bodies and in this case it is possible to provide exact mate-
rial equivalents. For others the material may share the same alloy family basis, but with detail
compositional or microstructural differences, and with static properties which overlap those of
the material as measured. Such materials could be considered comparable but not equivalent.
The detail of the procedure and sources employed is provided in the manual accompanying
the database.
It is the recommendation of HBM nCode that if the closest fatigue estimation is required for
design, then the material parameters which should be used are those from material tested in
the exact condition: This means composition, manufacturing route, and heat treatment condi-
tion (including strength) as used. This should ideally come from test coupons machined from
an actual component.
