Design Brief:

• Build an FE model of a concrete raft on elastic

subgrade as per the sketch herein
• The raft is to be made of reinforced concrete slab and
supports 3x columns (P1.1, P2.1 and P2.2) and 1x
staircase core (BC3) as shown
• Perform structural analysis of this raft and design
reinforcement and thickness of this raft in two
options:
• Assume 1.2m thickness and design
reinforcement for the resultant bending
moments and shear forces
• Find the most optimal thickness and
reinforcement quantity using concrete cost rate
of $250/m3 and steel cost rate of $1800/ton
• Loads and loading combinations acting on the raft are
given on the following slide.
• Loads are to be applied at the centre of gravity of
columns and the staircase
• Subgrade reaction modulus to be assumed is:
• Kz = 35 kPa/mm

Notes:
• N denotes vertical load acting downward
• There are neither horizontal loads nor moments from
the dead load nor from the live load. The horizontal
loads Vx and Vy and moments Mx and My are only for
the earthquake load cases.
• Ideally I would like the design to be done in line with
Austrlian Standard AS3600, but British Standard is
also acceptable
