GROUP CASE ANALYSIS

Natural Law Theory

In some point in our lives there will come a situation that will test us, each of us faces
some dilemmas that will really put us in the situation where we have to decide whether to take a
life or put your life at risk to save it. We ought to seek the best plausible decisions when we
encounter these kinds of situations, but how? Are we really sure that what we decide is the right
thing to do?
People focus too much in promoting goodness in the society. They always go for what is
the best, unlike the terrorist’s aim. We give so much importance on morality that we come up
with so many different theories to support our own belief of what good and evil and what is right
or wrong. We often consider so many aspects in our, stereotypes, and so much more.
This is not that bad especially if you are facing some moral dilemmas. You need to
consider what is more important based on what you believe in. In cases like abortion, murder,
stealing and other acts that are considered as worldly sins, people seems to have a divided stand
on this. Let’s examine some in cases of stealing; a hungry and homeless kid for example stole
from a very rich person a single dollar to buy food. We can say that this is justifiable just because
the kid needs to feed himself and the person is rich anyway.
However, there is a theory of natural law that implements a universal moral principle and
it would probably say that what the kid has done is wrong for it took advantage of an innocent
person’s wealth. This is just a mild scenario but there are cases where it’s in between life and
death. Let’s say for this particular case Gretchen who is a church preacher and became pregnant.
The sad part of the story is she experienced the ectopic pregnancy on her way and the only way
to get her safe is to abort the fetus.
Abortion is an example of taking one’s life and it is opposite to the church’s teachings.
The experts on cases like Gretchen’s suggested the process knowing it was a hopeless case for
the baby but for Gretchen, there is a higher chance survival. The natural law explains how this
action is against the law of nature. It’s because killing of an innocent child is a big no to this
theory.
The theory of natural has a suggestion for Gretchen’s case and to what moral decision
should be taken. Since killing does not agree with the natural law, Gretchen can only pray for a
miracle to happen that would save both she and her child. No abortion shall take place this time
but a hope for the best result. If this law will be taken seriously in Gretchen’s case, there should
be no regrets if it leads to death for both of them. Along with that Gretchen is also a devotee to
her religion in which she values life and abide in the teaching of the “BIBLE” about this matter
As a mother, most of the time, they prefer to sacrifice their own life just to save their
child’s. A mother’s unconditional love can be reflected in the virtues of natural law and it is
shown on Gretchen’s case abiding the law of nature. Although, the natural law is not entirely the
basis of moral reasoning, we can tell that it suggested something that a person will really do in
real-life situation.
Given a lot of choices in this world, no one would expect that all mothers will do the
same thing as what Gretchen would do in this situation. Some will proceed to abortion and some
will even give whatever it takes to save both if ever there’s a way. But, one thing is for sure, that
in natural law, a mother will not sacrifice her own child for her safety and it will take a rigid
explanation to bend her decision or even prove this theory to be totally absurd.
