Additional information:
There
are
song
selections
you
will
learn
to
help
you
understand
and
perform
the
notes/terms/key/chords/etc
that
are
being
introduced
in
each
unit.
By
learning
these
increasingly
challenging
selections,
you
are
building
the
skills
necessary
to
continue
on
to
Piano
II
and/or
literature
that
is
increasingly
more
complex.
Be
patient
with
yourself
and
work
hard.
The
rewards
are
great
when
you
have
developed
these
new
skills,
and
you
can
really
PLAY
THE
PIANO
and
you
become
a
strong
MUSICIAN!
All
students
will
be
given
choices
of
literature
to
select
a
Recital
piece
from.
They
will
learn
and
perfect
it
to
the
best
of
their
ability.
A
class
Recital
will
be
held
near
the
end
of
each
semester.
Students
will
play
for
each
other
and
will
complete
a
critique
of
each
student’s
performance.
The
critique
is
a
worksheet
with
specific
criteria
that
each
student
should
evaluate.
It
is
possible
for
a
student
to
complete
book
1,
and
move
into
book
2
during
their
full
year
in
Piano
I.
Students
are
encouraged
to
work
at
their
own
pace
and
their
progress
is
checked
daily,
and
often
several
times
each
day.
Please return the expectation sheet along with your $15 piano book fee by January 13.
Piano
Class
Expectation
Sheet
1.
You
are
required
to
purchase
a
piano
book
from
Mr.
Merritt/Mr.
Wright.
The
15.00
will
cover
your
piano
book
(which
you
keep)
and
cover
the
cost
of
additional
music
and
materials
used
in
the
class.
2.
Grades
are
based
on
daily
practice,
assigned
pieces,
occasional
computer
work,
and
written
assignments.
Regular
attendance
is
necessary
to
do
well
in
this
class!
After
your
second
absence,
and
for
each
absence
after
that,
two
points
will
be
deducted
from
your
participation
grade.
Work
can
be
made
up
with
an
excused
absence
slip
from
the
office.
It
is
the
student’s
responsibility
to
obtain
all
work
missed
from
the
teacher.
3. At the end of each 9 weeks you will be assessed on the following manner:
Daily
Assessment
Grade
–
how
well
you
stay
on
task,
practicing
your
assigned
selections,
class
participation,
having
your
music
and
pencil.
4. We will learn to play a wide variety of piano pieces from the book. We will not be focusing on current pop music.
5.
Since
piano
fulfills
an
Arts
and
Humanities
requirement,
we
will
integrate
lessons
in
the
music
history,
visual
arts,
dance
and
drama
into
our
classroom
assignments.
6.
Please
help
us
to
take
care
of
the
piano
lab.
We
are
fortunate
to
have
this
lab,
and
abuse
of
the
pianos
will
not
be
tolerated.
Please
take
extra
care
of
the
headphones
and
the
adapters.
7.
Because
a
curved
hand
position
is
required
to
play
the
piano
well,
short
fingernails
are
necessary.
Also
please
wash
your
hands
or
use
hand
sanitizer
before
and
after
class.
8.
Due
to
the
expensive
equipment
in
the
room,
there
will
not
be
any
food,
candy,
or
drinks
(including
water)
in
the
classroom.
9. You might not get individual attention on an everyday basis.
10.
You
may
use
your
own
set
of
headphones
if
you
desire.
Headphones
are
available.
We
have
adapters
available
if
needed,
and
they
must
remain
in
the
room.
Classroom procedures:
1. Be in the piano lab when the tardy bell rings.
2. Any absence or tardy slip should be placed on the teacher’s desk.
3.
You
should
proceed
to
practicing
your
piano
upon
entering
the
classroom.
Do
not
wait
for
the
teacher
to
tell
you
to
begin.
4.
You
will
be
dismissed
one
minute
before
the
bell
in
order
to
collect
your
things.
Do
not
go
past
the
double
doors
at
the
end
of
the
music
hallway.
Do
not
go
into
the
main
hall.
5. Any time you leave your piano, hook your headphones to the music stand, push your chair in, and turn off piano.
6. Please take your music book home with you each day. Do not leave it in the room.
