ABSTRACT

In our project, many phenomena appeared in the given document including passive

structures and economic terms. Since passive voice is still a difficult structure in English-

Vietnamese translation, we only concentrate on this grammatical construction to carry out

our study. The purpose of this thesis is to study the translation strategies employed to

translate English passive voice in the given document and to enhance translators’ skills

when dealing with English-Vietnamese passive structures in economic-related documents.

By clarifying their features and proposing strategies for translation, one list of 127 passive

structures has been extracted from a single source to be considered as samples. By using

content analysis and statistics, the frequency of passive voice in the document and the

prevalence of proposed strategies will be revealed.

Consequently, five strategies have been explored in our translation. The highest frequency

belongs to translating into passive structure with 43%. The second most widely used in this

translation is translating into parallel active structure (21%). Meanwhile, the strategy of

translating into neutral sentence only accounts for 6%. In addition, translating passive

structure mentioned not only depends on the agent-patient transferrence and the formal

word “được, bị” in Vietnamese but also relies much on translating “Ved” through two

examples.

CHAPTER I. INTRODUCTION

1. Rationale of the study

Our group implements this research project due to two reasons:

Firstly, as students at School of Foreign Language – Hanoi University of Science and

Technology, we have taken three translation semesters. Realizing and highly appreciating

the importance of translation skills for our future career, our group decides to choose do the

graduation paper on translation.

Secondly, we were assigned a document of marketing named “Essentials of Marketing”

that mentions the basic knowledge of the marketing system, marketing functions and

pricing. During the process of translation, our group realizes that the passive structures

appear with high frequency and variability, which is very suitable for the purpose of our

research.

2. Objective of the study

The research aims at answering the question:

What translation strategies are suitable with the passive structures from English

into Vietnamese?

With the purpose of clarifying features and translation strategies of passive voice, our group

hopes to help ourselves, other students and translators to understand deeply how to deal

with this phenomenon better.

1
3. Methods of the study

Content analysis which was the main method in our research was employed to pick out

passive structures from the document “Essentials of Marketing”. By consulting books from

School of Foreign Languages and other researchers’ studies about how to translate English

passive structure into Vietnamese one and other resources, we collected a list of strategies

for translating English-Vietnamese passive voice and then content analysis was used to

select the most appropriate strategy for translating each passive structure in the material. In

addition, statistics was applied in our research to identify frequency of strategies for

translating this structure. All of the three members in our group carried out independently

and gave the same result of the number of passive voice in the document with 127 passive

structures. This helped our project become more accurate and reliable.

4. Design of the study

Our research consists of four main chapters as below:

 Chapter I. Introduction

 Chapter II. Literature Review

 Chapter III. Study

 Chapter IV. Conclusion

In more details, the first chapter presents overview of the research in terms of rationale,

objectives and methods and organization.

The second chapter gives an overview of translation, overview of passive structure in the

document and strategies for translating them

2
The next chapter shows an introduction to the document of marketing, overview of passive

voice and strategies for translating English- Vietnamese passive voice in the document.

The last chapter provides a summary of our research as well as makes some

recommendations for further study.

CHAPTER II. LITERARTURE REVIEW

Passive voice is one of the most difficult structures in translating a document from

English to Vietnamese. For this reason, in our project, we focus on studying the translation

of passive voice as the base to apply in the given text “Essentials of Marketing”. The aim of

this section is to give an overview of translation, passive voice and some common

strategies for translating English-Vietnamese passive structures.

1. Overview of translation

1.1. Definition of translation

Translation plays an indispensable role in any era, especially in the context of globalization

today. Translation brings knowledge to those who are seeking new knowledge. It is not

merely an inter-linguistic process. It is more complex than replacing source language text

with target language text. Through thousand years of existence and development,

translation is a large subject and it has various explanations and each researcher has their

own opinions about definition of translation. Newmark (1995) defines translation as

“rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the way that the author intended

the text” (p.5). In this definition, he emphasizes the importance of meaning which the

writer intends in translation from one language to another. Having the same idea, the

Merriam – Webster Online Dictionary showed that translation consists of changing one

state of form to another, to turn into one’s own of another language.

From a linguistic point of view, Nida and Taber (1974) believe what is involved in the

process of translating is “reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent

of the source-language message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style”

(p.12). The definition indicates that translators must pay attention to two requirements

4
which are the equivalence in meaning and in style when they render a text from source

language.

Despite different ways of explaining translation from these researchers’ perspectives,

translation in all languages to our understanding has some common features in general.

That is the crucial element to express the author’s thoughts from source language to target

language in terms of accuracy, naturalness, concision.

1.2. Methods of translation

“Translation methods are divided into many categories” (Faculty of Foreign Languages,

2005) for example, word for word translation, literal translation etc. (p.23). However, to the

extent of our study, we only focus on the two main significantly noticeable methods

relating to strategies for translating passive voice from English to Vietnamese. These

methods are semantic translation and communicative translation.

To convey exact contextual meaning of the original, semantic translation attempts to

preserve the semantic and syntactic structures of the second language as closely as possible.

(Faculty of Foreign Languages, 2005). Therefore, a semantic translation tends to be more

complex, more detailed, more concentrated, and pursues the thought processes of the author

rather than the intention. (Newmark, 1995).

Meanwhile, communicative translation attempts to render the meaning of source text in

such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the

readership (Faculty of Foreign Languages, 2005). In other words, it focuses mainly on

transferring message of the sentence and the impact on the reader rather than preserving

author’s thought processes. Thus, a communicative translation is likely to be smoother,

simpler, clearer, and more direct in the target text.

5
2. Overview of passive voice

2.1. Passive voice in English

2.1.1. Definition of passive voice

According to Payne (2011), the term voice refers to the relationship between the subject

and the verb in a sentence. Passive voice is a grammatical construction in which the subject

of a sentence or clause takes the role as a patient of the action rather than the agent. (p.302).

Example: My book was stolen.

In this example, the subject “my book” is the patient of the verb “stolen”.

Sharing the attitude, Wang (2010) defines: “Passive voice describes the whole process of

certain event from the patient’s point of view. It is a marked form of voice.” (p.1).In the

passive sentences, there are often three typical signs: be, -ed and by, which have respective

semantic structure. Passive structures are divided into two kinds. They are passive with

agent and passive without agent, or, agentive passive and non-agentive passive. In the

agentive passive, the agent will not appear but will be contained or hidden in the context.

Example: The cookies were baked by Orna. (With agent)

Example: The cookies were baked. (No agent)

Ngoc Lam (2002) claims that when the subject receives the action, we use a passive verb

(the subject is what the action is directed at). It is explained that when we use the passive,

who or what causes the action is often unknown or unimportant:

Example: A lot of money was stolen in the robbery. (Somebody stole it but we do not know

who)

Example: Is this room cleaned every day? (Does someone clean it?-it is not important who)

6
Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman (1999) find out that passive construction employs the

highest frequency in scientific and technical writing.

2.1.2. Form of passive voice

According to Murphy (2011), the formation of the passive is:

Be (is/was/have been etc.) + the past participle

The passive forms of a verb are created by combining a form of the "to be verb" with the

past participle of the main verb.

Sometimes we can use get instead of be in the passive:

Example: I don’t often get invited to parties. (= I’m not often invited)

According to Ngoc Lam (2002), to change a sentence from active to passive voice, do the

following:

Active: S+V+O

 Passive: S + tobe + V- past participle + by + O

We decide which tense the verb is in, and change the verb to the passive, making sure that

“tobe” takes the same tense as the verb in the active sentence.

Example: Active: The company has ordered some new equipment.

 Passive: Some new equipment has been ordered by the company.

7
2.2. Passive voice in Vietnamese

2.2.1. The existence of passive voice in Vietnamese

In Vietnamese, there is some controversy of whether passive voice exists or not. In fact,

many Vietnamese grammatical and linguistic researchers do not agree that there is passive

voice in Vietnamese. According to Doan Thi Ngoc Sau (2010), Vietnamese is a non-

inflectional language. Sharing the same attitude, Bui Thi Dien (2005) claims that

Vietnamese is an isolated language in which the verb does not change in accordance with

person, tense, mood and voice. Therefore, active voice and passive voice do not exist in

Vietnamese like that in other flectional languages such as Russian and English.

On the other hand, the linguist Nguyen Hong Con (2004) states that the words “bị/được/do”

are seen as auxiliary verbs demonstrating passive function as thus possessing passive

feature. Standing at the neutral in position, Nguyen Kim Than (1977) accepts that those

lexical words “bị/được” convey the negative and positive implications respectively and

passive in Vietnam is also expressed by them or by structure “O do/của S + V”.

Accordingly, Vietnamese also has the way to represent passive voice through two specific

grammatical manners: formal word (bị/được/do) and word order (Bui Thi Dien, 2005).

Thus it does have existence of passive voice in Vietnamese. In the scope of our study, we

support for the idea that passive voice does exist in Vietnamese.

2.2.2. Form of passive voice

According to Faculty of Foreign Languages (2005), the passive voice in Vietnamese is often

expressed and recognized by the two words “được” and “bị”, but they convey very different

senses. The word “được” denotes to positive meaning while “bị” expresses negative

meaning. Here is the common structure of Vietnamese passive voice:

8
Patient + bị/ được + agent + verb

Or patient + bị/ được + verb + bởi + agent

Example: Jane bị một kẻ lạ mặt tấn công tối hôm qua./ Jane bị tấn công bởi một kẻ lạ mặt

tối hôm qua.

(Jane was attacked by a stranger last night.)

3. Strategies for translating English-Vietnamese passive structures

According to the material of Faculty of Foreign Languages (2005), two strategies for

translating passive voice include translating into passive one and active one. However, Luu

Trong Tuan and Bui Thi Dien carried out more detailed studies on passive voice and in the

papers of researching passive structures, Luu Trong Tuan (2010) and Bui Thi Dien (2005)

pointed out various strategies for translating English-Vietnamese passive constructions.

These five following strategies are most significantly applied in translation of passive voice

from English to Vietnamese.

3.1. Translate passive voice into passive structure

This is the first strategy and it is the simplest way to translate a document in general. Using

this strategy does not require translators to make any changes in sentence’s structure. Put it

simply, an original sentence in passive form is totally converted into the nearest target

sentence in passive one.

Example:

This camera is used to monitor all employees in the company.

 Chiếc camera này được sử dụng để giám sát mọi nhân viên trong công ty.

9
3.2. Translate passive voice into passive two-layered theme-rheme structure

To make the phrase “them-rheme structure” more understandable, Luu Trong Tuan (2010)

illustrated this strategy as “the active structure inside the passive structure”. Here is the

description of this strategy in passive structure:

Beneficent/Patient + Verb of experience + Actor/Agent + Action

(bị/được)

Moreover, it is noticeable to realize that the passive structure “bị/được + V+ bởi (by)

+Agent is not applied effectively for all sentences because it may cause unnatural sound in

Vietnamese translation.

Example:

- The little girl was bitten by the dog.

 (1) Bé gái đó bị cắn bởi chó.

 (2) Bé gái đó bị chó cắn.

- Shuji Nakamura was awarded the Nobel prize in Physics by the Norwegian Nobel

Committee in 2014

 (1) Shuji Nakamura được trao giải Nobel Vật lý bởi Hội đồng Nobel Na Uy năm

2014.

 (2) Shuji Nakamura được Hội đồng Nobel Na Uy trao giải Nobel Vật lý năm 2014.

Obviously, the second translations in both examples are much better and more familiar to

Vietnamese people’s understanding than the first ones.

10
3.3. Translate passive voice into impersonal active structure

If there is no actor or agent in the passive sentence in the source text, the translation will be

translated into impersonal active structure. In other words, this strategy hides the agent of

the sentence.

Example:

Some particular remedies should be used to cure dengue completely.

 Cần sử dụng một số loại thuốc đặc trị để chữa dứt điểm bệnh sốt xuất huyết.

3.4. Translate passive voice into parallel active structure

In his research, Luu Trong Tuan (2010) said that when passive construction is paralleled to

active construction in the original sentence, the active one should be used in the translation

to make it natural. The verb in the passive voice in English should be changed into the verb

in active voice in Vietnamese.

Example:

The disproportion between supply and demand sources may be often encountered in
business.

 Chênh lệch giữa nguồn cung và nguồn cầu có thể thường xuyên xảy ra trong kinh

doanh.

3.5. Translate passive voice into neutral sentence

According to the paper of Bui Thi Dien and her colleague Nguyen Hong Con (2004), this

type of sentence was considered as “a neutral structure between active and passive structure

rather than typical passive structure”. In addition, in the other research of Bui Thi Dien

(2005), when the sentence cannot be translated into active structure or the identification of

11
positive meaning or negative meaning in the passive sentence is not obvious as well, the

sentence should be translated into neutral structure.

Example:

- The dinner has just been prepared.

 Bữa tối vừa dọn xong.

- That house has been already torn down.

 Ngôi nhà đó dỡ bỏ xong rồi.

In short, three main parts mentioned in this chapter include overview of translation and

passive voice and the five strategies for translating English passive voice into Vietnamese

one. In order to understand more deeply about this chapter with practical figures, we will

continue the next chapter describing overview of passive voice in the given document of

“Essentials of Marketing” and strategies for translating passive structure in the material.

12
CHAPTER III. STUDY

Passive voice is one of the most challenging parts when contrasting English with the

Vietnamese language. Since the purpose of our research is to clarify strategies for

translating this grammatical structure from English into Vietnamese, it is necessary to carry

out content analysis and statistics. In order to enhance the reliability of this research,

content analysis is applied to pick up passive structures in the given text and analyze the

strategies for translating these constructions. Besides, statistics is used to identify the

frequency of strategies used in the data sources.

First of all, we go through the introduction of the document and the overview of

passive voice which describes the frequency of strategies for translating English-

Vietnamese passive structures in the given text. After that, we start to research five

remarkable strategies which are employed to render English passive voice to Vietnamese

passive structures.

1. Introduction to the document

The book “Essentials of marketing”, written by an Indian experienced author Manmohan

Joshi presents basic knowledge about marketing. It is divided into twelve main chapters

with different objectives for each one. In the scope of our graduation paper, we have just

been assigned to translate first four chapters in this document including “Market and

marketing”, “Marketing systems”, “Marketing functions” and “Pricing”. In more details,

the first chapter presents overview of marketing, its importance to the society and some

features of modern marketing. The second one consists of definition of marketing system

and marketing process. The next one depicts a classification of marketing functions and the

last chapter provides elementary understanding of pricing such as definition, objectives,

and procedures. Regarding the language in each chapter, it is utilized in a flexible and
13
coherent way. In addition, the author’s writing style is logical and clear enough for readers

to follow the contents.

2. Overview of passive voice in the document

During the translation process, our group has realized that passive voice is the most

outstanding language phenomenon appearing in the given document with 127 listed passive

structures.

The passive constructions have been picked out from the given text and translated into

Vietnamese in five different categories. The reason for this division is due to various ways

of dealing with the source texts in order that the target texts not only sound natural but also

the content of the document is guaranteed in terms of accuracy, naturalness and cohesion.

The five different translation strategies employed consist of translating passive voice into

passive structure, into two layered theme-rheme structure, into impersonal active structure,

into parallel active structure and into neutral sentence. The frequency of the above

strategies used in the document is described in the table and pie chart, respectively below.

Although one passive structure can be translated with more than one way, statistics here

gives the one way that our group considers it as the most suitable one for each passive

structure.

14
No. Name of strategy Frequency

Translate into neutral sentence

Figure 1. Frequency of strategies for translating English-Vietnamese passive structures.

15
As can be seen clearly in the pie chart above, translating into passive structure accounts for

43%, which holds the highest frequency among the five strategies. A common reason for

this phenomenon is that scientific documents are often precise and this book provides basic

knowledge in business which is understandable to most readers. The usage of the same

structure in translated version not only transfers absolutely precise meaning of sentence but

also maintains exact author’s thought process.

The second most widely used in translation is translating into parallel active structure with

21%. As Vietnamese people usually prefer to use active structure rather than using passive

one in both spoken and written language, this strategy is more familiar to Vietnamese

people’s understanding. Moreover, the existence of Vietnamese passive voice has still been

a controversial issue; therefore, it is better to use active ones when translating from English

passive to Vietnamese.

Meanwhile, the smallest frequency of translation strategies belongs to translating into

neutral sentence accounting for only 6%. It is rarely used because only a few verbs such as

change, revise, postpone, prepare are suitable with this strategy, so it is not commonly used

in translating from English document into Vietnamese one.

3. Strategies for translating English-Vietnamese passive voice

3.1. Translating passive voice into passive structure

The first strategy is applied for 55 out of 127 passive structures in the document, which

makes up 43% in total. This means that nearly a half of passive constructions listed use it in

translating from the source language to the target language. This is, as mentioned above,

because it not only requires no changes in structure in translated version but also maintains

precise meaning of the sentence. Examples of this strategy are illustrated below:

16
Example 1:

Now, production is carried on in large Giờ đây, sản xuất được thực hiện với số

quantity. lượng lớn.

In the above example, the passive contains no agent. In this case, the author does not need

to mention the agent or he does not know the agent.

Example 2:

Some of the products are distributed to Một số sản phẩm được phân phối tới nhà

manufacturers and the remaining goods are sản xuất và các sản phẩm còn lại sẽ được

distributed to the final consumers through a phân phối tới những người tiêu dùng cuối

chain of wholesalers, retailers, agents etc. cùng thông qua các chuỗi bán buôn, bán lẻ,

đại lý, v.v…

The passive structures in the above examples have very obvious meaning for everyone to

understand and it is not necessary to make any changes in the target structure. Thus,

translating passive voice into passive structure is the most appropriate strategy for

transferring such structures.

The passive voice in Vietnamese is often expressed and recognized by two verbs of

experience “bị” and “được”. Therefore, the structure can be drawn out like this: “được/bị”

+ verb (unchanged forms) like “được thực hiện” in the first example or “được phân phối” in

the second one.

17
Depending on the context of the document and the author’s intention, the verbs of

experience “bị/được” should be used in a flexible way to obtain a natural translation

because each word conveys different senses. Passive voice with “bị” often implies negative

aspect of meaning which often shows an adversity, a disadvantage or unfortunate events.

Meanwhile, the one with “được” denotes the neutral or positive aspect of meaning.

From the second example above, it is easy to realize that the author simply wants to show

two directions of product distribution in business to his readers. In this case, “được” is more

reasonably used than “bị” is.

The following example uses the same strategy:

What it offers for sale is determined not by Những gì công ty yêu cầu bày bán được

the seller but by the buyer. quyết định không phải bởi người bán mà

bởi chính người mua.

Here comes a common structure “by + agent” in English passive voice which is translated

as “bởi+ chủ thể hành động” in Vietnamese. This way of translating “by” is easily seen in

most of the structure. In this case, the author has to mention the agent of the action. The

indispensable agents mentioned here are “the seller” and “the buyer”.

Generally, in the context of economic theory, the use of word “được” in Vietnamese

passive structure is the most suitable way to translate from English passive voice.

3.2. Translating passive voice into parallel active structure

This strategy is applied when English passive construction and Vietnamese active one

parallel to each other in several certain situations. As a result, English passive verbs in the

18
original sentences are converted directly into Vietnamese active verbs in the translated

ones. This strategy is shown in the examples below:

The managerial attention is focused on the Chú ý quản lý tập trung vào cả thị trường

market and the consumer. và người tiêu dùng.

Obviously, the verb “is focused” can be rendered as “được tập trung” by strategy for

translating passive voice into passive structure. Therefore the whole sentence could be like

“Sự chú ý quản lý được tập trung vào cả thị trường và người tiêu dùng”. However, the word

“được” is omitted from the translated text both for brief and avoidance of repeating.

Since markets are geographically Về mặt địa lý, các thị trường nằm tách biệt

separated from the production place, với nơi sản xuất, do đó vận chuyển hàng

transportation is essential. hóa là nhiệm vụ cần thiết.

These kinds of sentences can be clearly translated into passive constructions as in the first

strategy using “bị /được nằm tách biệt”. However, adding “bị /được” seems to be

redundant in such structures. This version of translation makes the sentence awkward and

unnatural. Put it simply, “are separated” is directly converted into “nằm tách biệt” so that

the translation will be clearer and more fluent in Vietnamese.

Another example is:

The common usage of market means a place Thông thường thị trường có nghĩa là nơi

where goods are bought or sold. diễn ra hoạt động mua và bán các loại

hàng hóa.

19
In this example, it appears inversions in position of the subject and object in the passive

sentence. This means that in the process of translating, the subject of the English passive

“goods” has become the object of the parallel Vietnamese active which is located after

main verbs. This kind of transferring into Vietnamese active form still remains the semantic

meaning of the source text but it is different in structure and pragmatics.

In term of pragmatics, the conversion of this structure has changed information value,

expression value and style to fit with the context of the translations which appear in the

target text. For that strategy, it helps to ensure the logical, understandable, and very true

translation to the mindset of the Vietnamese.

When the price is lowered, the profit may Khi giá cả giảm xuống, lợi nhuận có thể giảm

come down but the sales will increase as nhưng doanh số bán hàng sẽ tăng vì có nhiều

more customers may buy the product. khách hàng mua sản phẩm.

The English sentence does not fit the usage of Vietnamese passive voice “bị hạ xuống”, it

should not be translated into passive structure as in the first strategy like “Khi giá cả bị hạ

xuống, lợi nhuận có thể giảm nhưng doanh số bán hàng sẽ tăng vì có nhiều khách hàng mua sản

phẩm”. If we keep the original meaning of the verb, the Vietnamese translation version will not

be very fluent. Therefore, we should change it into active voice to make it simple and natural,

as well as easier to read.

20
3.3. Translating passive voice into impersonal active structure

Luu Trong Tuan (2010) mentioned in his research that impersonal active structures are a

feature of the scientific texts. Therefore, in order to “attain higher communicative quality”

in the translated text, this strategy is recommended to be employed when translating

English passive voice to Vietnamese one.

The brief structure of translating English passive voice into Vietnamese impersonal active

structure is as follows:

N, be + PII (V) V, N (active)

In which N refers to noun and PII (V) refers to past participle of the verb.

This strategy is demonstrated in the following examples:

First customer’s need is known and then Trước hết, cần nhận biết nhu cầu của khách

production takes place; then the product is hàng, tiếp theo diễn ra sản xuất; rồi sau đó

sold at a profit. bán sản phẩm với lợi nhuận.

Here we can see that there is no alternative solution to this translation except for this

strategy. The author wants to emphasize the action rather than the patient, so the verb “cần

nhận biết” is inversed to stand at the beginning of the translated sentence. Therefore, this

strategy is the most suitable way to translate these similar sentences.

21
Demand and supply of goods should be Cần cân bằng nhu cầu và nguồn cung cấp hàng

balanced through storage and transportation. hóa thông qua khâu tích trữ và vận chuyển.

Although the agent is not mentioned here, it is implied that the agent may be manufacturers

or producers. In order to get a natural translation and increase its objectiveness, this strategy

is well applied for such structure.

Moreover, the above example can be translated into either impersonal active structure or

passive structure. If the latter strategy is used, the translation will be like “Nhu cầu và

nguồn cung cấp hàng hóa được cân bằng thông qua khâu tích trữ và vận chuyển”. It is also

acceptable to use this version of translation.

Let us look at another example:

The manufacturer must see that the price is Các nhà sản xuất phải nhận thấy rằng cần duy

maintained till his products reach the trì giá cả cho đến khi sản phẩm của họ đến tay

ultimate consumer. người tiêu dùng cuối cùng.

In these sentences, there is no agent, so it should be translated into impersonal active

sentence to maintain high communicative quality. Moving the verb “maintain” before the

patient “the price” in the translation emphasizes the importance of this action.

22
3.4. Translating passive voice into two-layered theme-rheme structure

Vietnamese people usually prefer to use active form in the spoken language to make a

natural sound rather than using passive form. As mentioned in the previous chapter, when

this strategy is used in the translated document, instead of standing behind “by” in the

passive structure “Beneficent/patient + verb of experience (bị/được/do) +V+by+ agent” as

usual, the agent’s position moves directly after the verb of experience and V moves to at

the end of the sentence. Such strategy is described in the following examples:

The main aim of assembling is to bring the Mục đích chính của việc thu thập là để đưa

products to a central place in order to hàng hóa tới một địa điểm trung tâm để

distribute them either for production or mang đi phân phối nhằm mục đích sản xuất

consumption purposes. The job of hoặc tiêu thụ. Việc thu thập do các bên

assembling is carried out by middlemen, trung gian, nhà sản xuất, v.v … thực

manufacturers etc. hiện.

As seen in the example, it is likely to apply the first strategy “translating into passive

structure” to translate this sentence such as “Việc thu thập được thực hiện bởi các bên trung

gian, nhà sản xuất, v.v…” Although this translation is acceptable; however, it is realized

that it makes the sentence more unnatural and inflexible. Translating into two-layered

theme-rheme is much more effective in this instance.

Instead of being the object, the agent becomes the subject of a complex sentence. Such

strategy is shown in the following examples:

23
These types of goods are purchased by Các loại hàng hóa này do người sử dụng

ultimate users or consumers for their hoặc người tiêu dùng cuối cùng mua để sử

personal use. dụng.

This sentence can be translated by using the first strategy. Another translation version of

“are purchased by ultimate users or consumers” could be “được mua bởi người sử dụng

hoặc người tiêu dùng cuối cùng”. As can be seen clearly, the second version is not as

natural and understandable as the first translation one. The objects “ultimate users or

consumers” become subjects of the action and the word “by” is not translated only by “bởi”

in Vietnamese but also by “do”.

Another example is:

Exchange of the goods or services takes Việc trao đổi hàng hóa hay dịch vụ chỉ diễn

place only when the prices are agreed upon ra khi mức giá đã được cả người mua và

by the seller and the buyer. người bán đồng thuận.

In this sentence, the passive voice consists of two agents “by the seller and the buyer”, so

the verb phrase “are agreed upon” should be translated into passive two-layered theme-

rheme structure to keep the naturalness of Vietnamese language. If we translate this passive

voice into passive structure: “Việc trao đổi hàng hóa hay dịch vụ chỉ diễn ra khi mức giá đã

được đồng thuận bởi cả người mua và người bán”, the sentence will not be smooth for

Vietnamese people.

24
3.5. Translating passive voice into neutral sentence

In the first four chapters of the book, not many passive structures in English translated into

Vietnamese use this strategy because it only accounts for a very small percent (6%), as

shown in the pie chart at the beginning of the chapter. This will be explained more closely

in several examples below:

This target may be revised from time to Mục tiêu này có thể thay đổi theo thời gian.
time.

According to thorough studies of Nguyen Hong Con and Bui Thi Dien (2004, 2005)

mentioned in the chapter literature review, when one sentence cannot be identified to have

positive or negative meaning, it belongs to neutral sentence. In other words, such sentence

is not a typical passive structure; therefore, we cannot apply the strategy for translating into

passive structure as usual.

On the surface, this above example can be translated into passive structure initially. For

example, “may be revised” can be translated into “có thể được thay đổi” or “có thể bị thay

đổi”. However, the author’s intention here is not obviously expressed whether this sentence

has positive meaning or negative one. As a result, this sentence should be translated into

neutral sentence to keep its objectiveness.

Only a limited number of structures are translated with this strategy because it is difficult to

identify the implication of the writer.

The purchase of such goods cannot be Việc mua những loại hàng hóa này không

postponed because they are daily thể trì hoãn vì chúng là những nhu cầu thiết

necessities of life. yếu hàng ngày của cuộc sống.

25
Similar to the first example, the structure “cannot be postponed” in the second sentence can

be seemingly translated into “bị trì hoãn”. However, it is acceptable to translate this

structure into “trì hoãn” because its meaning is also well kept. The intention of the author in

this sentence is not clearly identified to lean toward either any translation version in two

above ways of translating. Therefore, such kind of sentence does not belong to typical

passive structure. It exists between outstanding active and passive structure.

3.6. Translating past participle “Ved” in the passive structure

As mentioned in the previous chapter, the main structure of passive voice is:

S + be +Ved+ by + O

Under normal circumstances, when translating any passive structures, problems that most

translators usually pay attention to are the relationship between the agent and patient as

well as how to translate “be” correctly. However, a good translation requires more than

accuracy alone. During the process of translation, we have realized that translating passive

structure not only depends on translating these above mentioned factors but also relies

much on translating “Ved” in a flexible way in order to have smooth and natural translation

in Vietnamese.

This is illustrated in some following examples:

Buying may be done either directly or Mua hàng có thể diễn ra trực tiếp hoặc qua

through middlemen. khâu trung gian.

26
Apart from the past participle “done”, most words in this sentence are translated directly

using their common meanings. For instance, buying means “mua hàng” or middlemen

means “trung gian”. However, in this case, “do” does not possess the meaning of acting or

performing such as “làm”, “thực hiện” as usual.

In addition to select one out of five mentioned strategies to translate this sentence, first of

all, it is necessary to identify the meaning of “do” here. As it does not employ its original

meaning, this leads to paraphrasing the word based on the context of the document. “Do”

conveys the meaning of “happening” or “occurring” in this case.

Let us consider another example:

Business is run with an idea of earning Doanh nghiệp hướng đến mục tiêu đạt mức

profit at the maximum lợi nhuận tối đa.

According to Oxford Dictionary, the verb “run” in economic terms means to be in charge of

a business. The content of this sentence in Vietnamese is: “Doanh nghiệp được điều hành

cùng với mục tiêu đạt mức lợi nhuận tối đa”. Obviously, this translation version has an

unclear literary style with Vietnamese people. So the verb “run” should be translated into

“hướng đến”. It makes the meaning of this sentence easier to understand. The sentence is

more active and suitable with the expression of Vietnamese people.

From these examples, it is concluded that choosing right meaning of past participle “Ved”

based on understanding the context of the document” is also a very important task besides

keeping an eye on translating “Subject”, “Object” and “be” in the passive structure.

27
To sum up, in this chapter, our group studies about the uses of the given translation

strategies for passive structures in the text Essentials of Marketing. We have used all five

translation strategies in the whole text consisting of translating passive voice into passive

structure, translating passive voice into passive two-layered theme-rheme structure,

translating passive voice into parallel active structure, translating passive voice into

impersonal active structure, and translating passive voice into neutral sentence. We have

analyzed the frequency of use and the characteristics of each strategy to prove that the

strategies used in each specific structure is the most suitable way. Choosing the correct and

appropriate strategies for each sentence is very important for translating English-

Vietnamese passive structures. It is obvious that the translators have to identify carefully

the usages as well as the semantic features of the passive structures, and notice both the

meaning and the voice of the sentences to translate accurately and naturally.

28
CHAPTER IV. CONCLUSION

In this graduation paper, our group studied about translation strategies of English economic

document in Vietnamese: Essentials of Marketing. Passive structure was the grammatical

phenomenon that we have been discussed.

In the literature review chapter, we mentioned the definition and features of passive voice

in English and Vietnamese as well as the five translation strategies consisting of translating

passive voice into passive structure, translating passive voice into passive two-layered

theme-rheme structure, translating passive voice into parallel active structure, translating

passive voice into impersonal active structure, and translating passive voice into neutral

sentence. We conducted this paper based on existing information related to the thesis,

which has been done before and the primary data we collected.

In the third chapter, our group studied the uses of the five mentioned translation strategies

in the document with 127 listed passive structures. After that, we analyzed the frequency of

strategies and the characteristics of each strategy through passive structures in the

document. All five translation strategies have been used in the whole text. Translating into

passive structure holds the highest frequency among five strategies (43%). The second most

widely used in translation is translating into parallel active structure with 21%. The smallest

frequency of translation strategies belongs to translating into neutral sentence accounting

for only 6%. We also mentioned that translating passive structure not only depends on

translating these above mentioned factors but also relies much on translating “Ved” through

two examples.

Due to our limited time and knowledge, we only concentrated on studying strategies for

translating passive constructions from English into Vietnamese in the economic field

29
without considering how these structures are applied in other fields. Many grammatical

phenomena were used in the document such as passive voice, relative clauses, and

economic terms. However, our thesis only focused on passive voice. The last limitation was

due to the length of the given document of approximate 5000 words, so the generalization

and reliability of the thesis were not in high level. In the case of a longer document having

more passive structures, more than five strategies as mentioned above will be studied.

In short, after the process of carrying out this project, we suggested that translators have to

identify carefully the context, the meaning and the voice of the sentences to choose the

correct and appropriate translation strategies. It is suggested that the topic of translating

English passive structures into Vietnamese ones should be more investigated in a larger

scale than in our current study because passive structures are used widely in most fields,

and how to translate them in a flexible way in different fields is very important. Moreover,

we hoped that these five translation strategies were also applied flexibly in the other areas

of translation.
