Narrative Report

Last November 21-23, 2019, a plant tour was organized for second and
fourth year students of BS Petroleum Engineering of Batangas State University. It
consist of t plant or company visitation to companies and/or plants located on and
a trekking activity located within the provinces of Quezon, Laguna, and Cavite.
The tour buses left the departure point around 5:00am after clarifications
and reminders of the policies and rules of the tour and attendance checking.
Subsequently, after an hour there was a breakfast stopover and the travel to Cavite,
the first destination, was continued. Upon arrival, Hana Tech Inc., was the first
production facility that was visited by the students. It is a company that operates
in the Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing sector based on Welborne
Industrial Complex, Carmona, Cavite. The students were able to observe their
production room and the equipment and machine they possess. The company
fabricate ordered parts by using machines to make it out of materials such as
nplastics and alloys of metals. After that, the students went to Halliburton
Worldwide Ltd. Facility within the same location. Halliburton Company is a
multinational field service company. Its main office in the Philippines is located at
Makati City. Equipment such as bits, Pressure While Drilling (PWD), Logging While
Drilling (LWD), Measurement While Drilling (MWD), and batteries used in drilling
were witnessed by the students in the facility they visited in Cavite. The key
difference between LWD and measurement while drilling (MWD) is that whereas L
WD data are recorded in memory and downloaded when the tools reach the
surface, MWD data are transmitted up the pipe by means of a pressure wave (mud
pulsing) at 3 bits/s and monitored in real time. These are important and vital
operations to understand the nature, structure, and composition of the well for it
to be able to be drilled efficiently. It is emphasized how great the responsibility and
how high the risk people in the oil industry experience as a profession. One
miscalculation of improper connection may cost you a lot of money or even lives.
And that is also the reason why it is stressed in the student-tourist to be very careful
and mindful in everything you perform because it would be very important once
you are in the oil and gas industry. Then, the students checked in Monte Vista
Resort in Laguna to rest and get ready for the second day of tour.
CSA RESOURCES CORPORATION and Schlumberger Limited office both
located at Malabanban Sur, Candelaria, Quezon Province were the destination for
the second day. CSA provides General Engineering, Field Repair of Electro-
Mechanical Equipment, On-site Repair of Steam Turbines & Components and
Environmental Services. The CSA warehouse stores chemicals such as barite
powder, potassium chloride, Nt-plugs, bentonite, and Heco plugs that are mud
technology and the drilling areas and processes. The students visited the mud
mixing laboratory of Schlumberger facility. They create or formulate cement based
on the structure of the well and the properties requested by the engineer or
customer. It is a hit or miss process that involves a lot of testing to meet the
required properties. The students were shown chemicals such as accelerator to
hasten the time for the cement to form and the machines or equipment that
simulate the drilling procedure to test the formulated cement. After that, students
checked in the Dalampasigan Resort, also located within Quezon.
Lastly, a trekking activity in the Panguil River Ecopark located in Laguna was
set on the third day. The activity encompasses of a 30-40 minute trekking to
Ambon-Ambon falls along the Panguil river. Students were asked to obtain samples
from different locations and to characterize and describe why these rocks and/or
rock formation occur in that appearance and exhibit the specific properties. It was
a nature-amusing activity that not only reevaluates and reinforces one’s knowledge
on reservoir and geosciences but also made student be fascinated by nature and
appreciate its beauty. It also became somewhat a team building activity to
strengthen bonds within blockmates and classmates and promote solidarity.
Overall, students were able to have a glimpse of how the real work in the oil
and gas industry is. They were able to see and touch firsthand the equipment that
were mentioned and discussed during lectures and obtain significant takeaways
from professionals in the field of oil and gas itself especially in the drilling activities.
They were also able to apply the concepts introduced and discussed during the
Reservoir Geoscience course and apply them during the trekking activity.
