The compatibility of reservoir fluids should be checked prior to pumping any foreign fluids into
the formation such as workover fluids, solvents, fracturing fluids, and acid stimulation fluids.
By ensuring the compatibility of reservoir fluids, water and oil, we can minimize the risk of
creating permeability blocking sludge, emulsions, and precipitates.
The following procedure is used to test the compatibility of reservoir fluids with various
Acidizing fluids that will be pumped into the formation.
Equipment Required:
1. Obtain a well mixed, representative sample of acid from the tank truck after arriving on
location.
2. In a test bottle add 50 ml of acid sample and the required amount of Ferric Iron solution
and mix thoroughly. The Ferric iron concentration will be specified by the name of the
acid package. (For example, Platinum 5000 acid will require 5000 PPM of Ferric Iron
Solution. Add 2 ml of 125,000 PPM solution to the 50 ml of acid and mix well.)
3. Place the above sample in the water bath at B.H.T. to confirm additive stability for 30
minutes.
4. To 50 ml of acid add the required amount of iron solution as in step no. 2, mix well. To
the acid add 50 ml of freshly screened oil or condensate. Shake the mixture and then
place in the water bath at B.H.T.
5. Note the time for separation of the acid and the oil. Complete acid, oil phase separation
should occur in 10 minutes or less.
6. After the acid and the oil has separated 100%, shake the acid again to ensure 100%
separation of the fluids will occur.
7. Once the fluids have separated for a second time, allow the sample to remain at
simulated B.H.T. for an additional 30 minutes.
8. After 30 minutes, pour both the acid / oil mixtures and the stability test through a 100
mesh screen. The screen may be rinsed with hot water to simulate reservoir conditions.
No residue should be left on the screen.
9. Titration of the acid for acid strength can be conducted while the above tests are being
performed.
10. Label and keep the remaining portion of acid for at least two weeks at the closest Trican
Well Service base.

Add the calculated volume of acid to the predetermined water volume to make
up 1 m3 of acid. Additives such as surfactants, demulsifiers, inhibitors are
calculated on the total volume of mixed acid.
To determine the volume of water necessary to dilute acid to a definite volume of lesser
strength, use the following formula:

Equipment Required:
Procedure:
1. Observe the Normality of the Sodium Hydroxide solution in your test kit. ( N value )
Example: 1N, or 2N, or 5N.
2. Using a syringe, take 1,2, or 5 cc of acid to test and place it into the test bottle.
Example: If your (N value) of sodium hydroxide is 1N then use exactly 1 cc of acid.
Example: If your (N value) of sodium hydroxide is 5N then use exactly 5 cc of acid.
3. Add approximately 25 cc of distilled water, exact amount does not matter.
4. Add approximately 5 drops of phenolphthalein indicator solution.
5. Fill a 5, or 10cc syringe with sodium hydroxide solution exactly to the mark and add slowly
to the compatibility test bottle until the solution turns pink and slowly goes clear. Then add
the sodium hydroxide drop by drop until the test solution stays pink.
6. Determine exactly how many cc’s of sodium hydroxide it took to neutralize the acid, (turn
pink).
7. Calculate the strength of hydrochloric acid using the following formula;
*S.G. for 15% HCl = 1.075, S.G. for 28% HCl = 1.1421
*See Handbook for other strengths.
8. NOTE: Final acid strength should be within 10% of the desired acid strength.
The concentration of the acid will increase in the presence of IC-4 or IF-85. The
following table summarizes the increases observed.

The following procedure should be used as a guide when loading each 1000 litres of Mud
Clean-up Acid (12%/3% HCl/HF). Mud Clean-up Acid is also known as MCA or Hydrofluoric
Acid.
1. Add 594 litres of water to the tank truck. This is assuming 34% HCl acid is being used as
the concentrate. Reduce the water volume by the total volume of additives to be used.
2. Add all necessary additives to the water and mix thoroughly. The Defoamer and
Surfactants should be mixed first.
4. While agitating, SLOWLY add 48 kg of Ammonium Bifluoride (ABF) to the acid (48 kg/m³
acid). DO NOT DUMP THE ABF INTO THE ACID QUICKLY AS IT WILL SETTLE TO
THE BOTTOM AND WILL BE DIFFICULT TO DISSOLVE.
NOTE: 1. A Mud Clean-up treatment should never be used by itself. A preflush of HCl
should always precede the Mud Clean-up Acid Treatment. Consult a
Technical Sales representative prior to performing this type of treatment.
2. Mud Clean-up Acid is not to be confused with Mud Dispersing Acid (MDA).
SAFETY NOTE: Face shield should be worn in addition to all usual safety equipment.
1. The loadings for all chemical additives are calculated based on the volume of acid, and
not on the total volume of the acid solvent mixture.
2. The xylene must be pre-measured into a separate tank. Anti-sludging additives (ASA-2 or
ASA-60) are added to the solvent and mixed thoroughly prior to proceeding.
NOTE: Although anti-sludging additives are added to the xylene, their amounts are still
based on the volume of acid.
3. The acid is then blended separately by adding the remaining additives to the water and
then adding the raw acid. (Remember to subtract the volume of water based additives
from the water volume required.)
4. While circulating the Xylene/ASA mixture, the acid is then added to the xylene tank in
stages. ½ of the acid should be added and circulated for 15 minutes. The last ½ should
then be added and circulated for another 30 minutes with maximum shear. If there is
sufficient time, the acid can be added in 1/3’s for a stronger emulsion.
5. A thick and creamy emulsion should form. The blend should now be tested prior to
sending to location.
6. Do not add excess defoamer to an emulsified acid system. The blend will not foam and it
may destroy the emulsion.
Example:
Given 10 m³ of 70/30, the blend will consist of 7 m³ 15% acid and 3 m³ xylene.
1. Add 42 L ASA-2 and 70 L ASA-60 to 3 m³ xylene.
2. Add 3.93 m³ (594 L/m³ x 7m³ - 230 L of additives) of water to the tank truck. This is
assuming 34% HCl acid is being used as the concentrate.
3. Add all additives except the hydrocarbon (i.e. diesel or xylene) and the ASA (antisludging
agent) to the water and mix thoroughly.
4. Add 2.84 m³ (406 L/m³ x 7 m³) of concentrated acid from storage to the water blend. Mix
thoroughly.
5. Add the acid mixture in stages to the 3 m³ xylene mixture. Once finished, mix for 30
minutes with maximum shear. Perform compatibility testing at this point. (Note that the
titration strength will be approximately 10.5% due to dilution.)
SAFETY NOTE: Face shield must be worn in addition to all usual safety equipment. Emulsified
acid blends are flammable – proper safety precautions should be followed.

ACETIC ACID
Remarks
Acetic Acid is approximately 60% as efficient as an equal strength of HCl. That is 1000 litres
of 15% HCl will dissolve 220 kg of pure CaCO3, where as 1000 litres of 15% Acetic Acid will
dissolve approximately 128 kg of pure CaCO3. Acetic Acid gives extended reaction times on
reactive formations even at high temperatures. When HCl/Acetic Acid mixtures are used, the
HCl reacts first and the Acetic Acid penetrates deep into the formation before being totally
spent.
Remarks
Formic acid is approximately 75% as efficient as an equal strength of HCl. That is 1000 litres of
15% HCl will dissolve 220 kg of pure CaCO3, where as 1000 litres of 15% formic acid will
dissolve approximately 169 kg of pure CaCO3. Formic acid gives extended reaction times on
reactive formations even at high temperatures. When HCl/Formic Acid mixtures are used, the
HCl reacts first and the formic acid penetrates deep into the formation before being totally
spent.
Note: Water volume required should be reduced by the total volume of chemical additives.

Given:
Calculate:
1. Hole Capacity:
Hole Capacity (m³/m) = Volume (without excess) (m³) ÷ Plug Length (m)
2. Annular Capacity:
(NOTE: Can be calculated or found using the handbook)
Annular Capacity (m³/m) = Hole Capacity (m³/m) – [Metal Displ. of D.P. (m3/m) + Capacity of D.P.(m3/m)]
6. Mud Displacement:
Mud Displacement (m³) = Drill Pipe Volume to Top of Plug (m³) - Water Spacer Behind Volume (m³)
Example Problem:
Cement Top = 2330 m
Cement Bottom = 2545 m
Cement Volume = 12.75 t = 9.65 m³
Excess = 30%
Drill Pipe = 101.6 mm // 20.84 kg/m (Capacity = 0.005653 m³/m; Metal Displ. = 0.002455 m³/m)
1. Hole Capacity:
Caliper Log indicates a volume over the intended plug length of 7.42 m³.
Average Hole Capacity = Caliper Volume ÷ Plug Length
= 7.42 m³ ÷ (2545 m – 2330 m)
= 7.42 m³ ÷ 215 m
= 0.03451 m³/m
2. Annular Capacity:
Annular Capacity = Hole Capacity – (D.P. Capacity + D.P. Metal Displ.)

Yield
Yield is the final volume of slurry per tonne of dry cement. It is measured in m³/t and is the sum of the
absolute volume of the cement (per tonne) and the volume of mix water used. Neglecting shrinkage and
expansion, the wet slurry volume is equal to the dry set volume. The yield of Class “G” cement mixed at
1902 kg/m³ is 0.757 m³/t. Yield is most often increased or decreased by raising or lowering the water to
cement ratio. Density is inversely proportional to yield.
Density
The density of a slurry is its mass or weight for a given volume and is measured in either kg/m³ or lbs./gal.
The density of a slurry is a key factor in the compressive strength the cement will develop. The density
and yield of a slurry are a function of both the absolute volume of the dry cement blend and its water
requirement.
Retarding
The thickening time of a cement slurry is strongly dependent on temperature. Chemicals are used to
control the set time and avoid flash set in deeper wells. They are thought to function in part by binding
calcium (slowing acceleration) and/or coating the cement particles thereby slowing the hydration process.
Trican’s cement retardants are LTR, THR-100 and TDH.
Accelerating
At 22°C neat cement has a thickening time of approximately 8 hours. This time is further increased by
many of the additives used. To decrease the waiting on cement time, additives are used to accelerate the
setting time of the cement. Trican’s common cement accelerants are CaCl2, TA-1, TA-3, and SMS.
Thickening Time
The time it takes a cement blend to become essentially unpumpable (deemed 100 Beardon units, Bc)
while being constantly stirred is called its thickening time. This thickening time is a function of
temperature, pressure, density, composition of the cement itself, and the chemicals added to the cement.
Trican cement blends are tested with a pressurized consistometer to simulate downhole conditions in
providing an optimal thickening time; that is, a thickening time for a blend in a given area that is short
enough to allow for maximum early compressive strength while still being long enough to ensure adequate
pumping time. Chemicals which retard the setting of cement, lengthen the thickening time. Chemicals
which accelerate the setting of cement, shorten the thickening time.
Compressive Strength
The pressure required to crush a cube of set cement is deemed its compressive strength. This strength is
a function of many factors including time, temperature, pressure, density, surrounding media, cement
composition, and the chemicals added to the cement. Neat Class “G” cement mixed at 1902 kg/m³ and left
to cure in water at 25°C will develop a compressive strength of 30 MPa after approximately 2 weeks.
AEUB regulations require a compressive strength of 3.5 MPa after 48 hours on the upper most
hydrocarbon bearing zone or before drill out. Recommended compressive strength before perforating is
14 MPa. Normally, a cement with very high early compressive strength and a very short thickening time
will have reduced long term compressive strength. Early compressive strength is affected in the same way
by the same chemicals which effect thickening time.
Sulfate Resistance
2-
When set cement is exposed to water containing high sulfate ion (SO4 ) concentration, it can experience
2-
substantial degradation. This degradation is caused by SO4 reacting with a component of the cement
called tricalcium aluminate (C3A). The crystal that results from this reaction (ettringite) is larger than the
original components, forcing the cement to expand and break apart in the same way that ice will cause a
sidewalk to break apart. For the most part, sulfate attack is prevented by reducing the free C3A content in
the set cement. This can be accomplished by either reducing this fraction of the dry cement to less than
2-
2% (e.g. Class “G” HSR) or by adding SO4 (in the form of gypsum, CaSO4) to the dry cement. In the
latter case, ettringite crystals are still made, but because they are made in the unset cement rather than in
the set cement, the expansion does not cause degradation. (Note: Cement permeability also effects
sulfate resistance. For example, since the addition of fluid loss decreases the permeability of cement, its
use increases the sulfate resistance of cement.)
Expansion
During the setting process, the bulk volume of neat cement can shrink by as much as 0.5%. This
shrinkage reduces bond quality and can lead to fluid migration. This process is reversed through the
addition of either gypsum (CaSO4) or TA-1 to the cement. Both result in approximately 0.25% expansion.
In the case of gypsum, this expansion occurs through the formation of ettringite crystals during the setting
process. Given that ettringite is unstable at temperatures over 75°C, little or no expansion due to the
formation of ettringite will occur above these temperatures.
Thixotropy
Thixotropy is the ability of a liquid to gain gel strength once movement has stopped and to lose it once
movement renews. A non-cementitious example of thixotropy is ketchup. Thixotropy enables cement to
help support its own weight once pumping has stopped which helps to prevent loss circulation and cement
fallback. Thixotropy is usually created in cement by adding gypsum (i.e. through the formation of ettringite
crystals). Gypsum has the negative effects of entraining air and retarding set time. Similar to expansion,
since ettringite is unstable at temperatures over 75°C, thixotropic cements using gypsum are ineffective
above this temperature. Trican’s thixotropic cements (T-Mix’s, Trican SGC and Gastight 1750) use a
proprietary method of generating thixotropy without the use of gypsum.
Thermal Cement
Neat class “G” cement is stable to only 110°C. Above this temperature strength retrogression occurs: the
calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) crystals change form and size causing the cement to loose strength and
gain permeability. Thermal strength retrogression is prevented through the addition of a high
concentration of silica, usually silica flour. Trican thermal cements contain 40% of 325 mesh silica flour.
Free Water
The weight of the cement particles in a slurry can result in water being squeezed out of the lower portion of
the slurry. This water then accumulates at the top of the cement column. Although not fatal in vertical
wells, free water is a major concern in slant or deviated wells and in wells with potential gas migration.
Eliminating free water is accomplished by adding chemicals which bind the water. A few of the chemicals
which can be used to accomplish this include TWR-2, SMS, gypsum, gel, HEC and fluid loss control
additives.
Blend Type
API nomenclature uses a three number system for cement blends. The first two numbers designate the
ratio of absolute volumes of pozzolin (flyash) to cement. The third number designates the percentage of
bentonite gel used. For example, 0:1:4 “G” contains no flyash and has 4% (40 kg) gel. By comparison,
2:1:8 “G” contains twice the absolute volumes of flyash as class “G” cement as well as 8% (80 kg) gel.
TriSeal
TriSeal is designed to prevent loss circulation and cement fallback. TriSeal leaks off into high permeability
zones and reacts with the calcium components in the formation waters and mud filtrate to form a stiff silica
gel. This gel prevents cement from leaking off into the thief zone. NOTE: Because TriSeal will react with
the calcium in the cement, a water spacer of at least 1m³ must be pumped both before and after the
TriSeal preflush.
Optimum Flush
Optimum Flush is a polysaccharide based preflush designed to remove drilling mud prior to cementing.
Used either alone or with weighting agents, Optimum Flush will help to prevent channeling of the cement
through the mud as well as increase mud displacement efficiency. It is often used to carry weighting
material. Triflush surfactant can be added to Optimum Flush. The loading for Optimum Flush should be
3
13-15 L/m .
SAPP
SAPP (Sodium acid pyrophosphate) is designed to help remove bentonite (gel) based drilling muds by
chemically dispersing the mud thereby aiding in its removal. NOTE: SAPP should not be used in excessive
quantities or in wells which have a high tendency to slough in.
TriFlush
TriFlush is an anionic surfactant spacer that water wets the formation. Water wetting promotes better
contact and bonding with the cement and enhances oil/gas production. TriFlush should always be used
when displacing invert (hydrocarbon based) drilling muds.

The elongation of pipe due to a temperature change between surface and well
temperature is given by the following formula:
ΔL = 0.00001242 × L × Δ T
where: ΔL = elongation, m
L = length of string, m
ΔT = difference between surface and well temperature, °C.
(Ordinarily calculate the well temperature as the
average of surface and bottomhole temperatures).
The length of pipe being stretched can be calculated with the following:
L’ = 20,684 × Δ L × A
ΔF
Example:
A 38.1 mm x .109” wall coil string has become stuck in a 3500 m well.
Where is it stuck?
2. Mark the coiled tubing at this point (somewhere in the gap, between
the stripper and the bottom of the injector chains).
3. Increase the pull by some convenient number – say 5,000 daN (do
not pull over 80% of yield).
Thus:
A = 307 mm2
ΔL = 1.5 m
ΔF = 5,000 daN
L = 20,684 × 1.5 × 307
= 1905
5000
The stretch of tubulars (below their elastic limit) is described by the following formula:
ΔL = F × L × 0.04835
A × 1000
where: ΔL = stretch, m
F = pull force, daN (weight indicator value)
L = length of string, m
A = cross sectional area of tubular, mm2

3 × 164.3 m³/m³ N2 space factor @ 21 MPa and 65°C = 492.9 m³/m³ N2/fluid ratio
Using data from previous example, foam rate of 0.39 m³/min, ratio of 225
m³/m³ and N2 space factor of 240.3 m³/m³. Fluid rate is 0.2 m³/min
{(N2 ratio × fluid rate m³/min) ÷ N2 space factor m³/m³} ÷ foam rate m³/min =

For a pressure drop of 150 psi/1000ft at a rate of 1 BPM, this corresponds to a 150 x
2.261 = 339.15 kPa/100m pressure drop at 1 x 159.5 = 159.5 L/min.
Thus, at 159.5 L/min, a 4000 m string of 1.5" (0.102 wall) will have a pressure drop
of about 13.5 MPa.

Gas flow rates can be determined by flowing through a choke nipple and using the formula:
CP
Q=
GT
for SI units:
Reasonable field estimates for specific gravity and temperature of 0.60 and 300°K
(540°R) may be used for flow approximations when specific values are unknown, thus the
formula becomes:

The OIL AND GAS CONSERVATION REGULATIONS state that a fluid having a vapor
pressure greater than 14 KPa (2 psi) may not be used for hydraulic fracturing purposes.
When in doubt the vapor pressure should be checked with a field vapor pressure tester to
ensure the vapor pressure is below 14 KPa.
Field vapor pressure tester consists of an MSR fuel bottle with a brass cap and a 0-35
KPa (0-5psi) gauge.
Procedure:
1) Fill a clean Vapor pressure tester approximately 1/2 full (exact does not matter).
2) Secure lid and gauge and invert bottle once to gently agitate the fluid.
3) Place into water bath at 37.8°C and observe pressure after 15 minutes. If bath
is not available, place in warm location and observe vapor pressure. Check
the temperature of oil to ensure temperature is not above 37.8°C, or below the
actual pumping temperature.
4) Record the pressure when the reading has stabilized. If the pressure gauge
indicates a pressure of greater than 14 KPa or 2 psi then the fluid should be re-
sampled and re-tested. If it is still too high, then the Coordinator should be
contacted.
FORMULAS
Q = Quality
Q ÷ (1 – Q) = volume multiplier
e.g. 75% ÷ (1 – 75%) = 3
e.g. 21 MPa average bottom hole pressure @ 65°C average bottom hole
temperature @ 75% anticipated foam quality.
3 × 164.3 m³/m³ N2 space factor @ 21 MPa and 65°C = 492.9 m³/m³ N2/fluid ratio
e.g. Fluid Rate = 0.2 m³/min, pressure is 29 MPa @ 30°C average temperature, ratio
is 225 m³/m³
Using data from previous example, foam rate of 0.39 m³/min, ratio of 225 m³/m³ and N2
space factor of 240.3 m³/m³. Fluid rate is 0.2 m³/min
{(N2 ratio × fluid rate m³/min) ÷ N2 space factor m³/m³} ÷ foam rate m³/min = foam quality
{(225 m³/m³ × 0.2 m³/min) ÷ 240.3 m³/m³ N2 space factor @ 29 MPa and 30°C} ÷ 0.39 m³/min =
48%
Foam Density
Utilizing fresh water as the fluid to be foamed, density = 1000 kg/m³. Hole depth is
3000 m.
(300.5 kg/m³ N2 × 0.4848%) + (1000 kg/m³ × (1- 0.4848%)) = 664.24 kg/m³ foam density
