INTRODUCTION Tracing family history can be a fascinating pastime. Many thoughts come to our mind. Why did our ancestors leave their home and friends to come to an unknown country? What thoughts did they have of haw they were to survive weeks ona Sailing ship, different climate conditions, language problems to face etc. Were they ever sorry for coming here when faced with the hardships of raising a family and the privations of making a new home. Through this history, I trust that all will get to know to whom they are related. We forget so easily the ones who are not living close to us and we lose contact. Through these pages, I trust we will all once again be linked together. We thank God for Christian Ancestors who have taught their descendants how to live and walk in the Christian path. Many hours have been spent in compiling this book, most of them have been very enjoyable, and I trust you will all get as much enjoyment from reading these pages as I did from putting them together. As our Family Tree grows, add to it for yourselves so as future generations will know to whom they belong. Compiled by Merle Faulkner ABBREVIATION! His parents were Konrad and Maria Moller (nee Lies). Because of the militarisation of the country, it is understood that he left Germany at about seventeen years of age and went to South Africa. However, it would seem that he later returned to Germany as records show that he emigrated from Germany to Australia on the ship, "BEAUSITE", arriving on September Sth, 1863. He was naturalized on January 10th, 1870 at Ipswich. At the age of twentyseven years, Heinrich married Wilhelmine Louisa Wolter at Ipswich Reserve. Heinrich selected land at Mt. Walker on 21st July, 1868 (Portion 101, Parish- Mutdapilly, County-Churchill, 65 acres). Heinrich sold that block of land and selected a larger block in that area (Portion 120, Parish-Forbes, County- Churchill, 120 acres). On one of these properties, he established his first shop. While living at Mt. Walker, Heinrich became actively engaged in the building of Church Fellowships around the area. He was a man of deep spiritual understanding, with a real love for the Lord whom He loved and served. Later, on 16th April, 1881, he was elected a Deacon of the Engelsburg (Kalbar) Baptist Church. On July 18th, 1877, Heinrich selected a block of land at Teviotville (Portion 277, Parish-Fassifern, County-Churchill, 160 acres). The total cost of this block of land was forty pounds. Heinrich and Wilhelmine established a store at Teviotville near the railway line where they conducted a successful business as it was the only store in the area. Later they sold the store to a Mr. Jones, ‘the grandfather of the one time Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Mr. Clem Jones. Ouring the years 1884 - 1887 and 1893 - 1897, Heinrich was a member of the Goolman Divisional Board of the Goolman Shire Council. When he was over seventy years of age, Heinrich and Wilhelmine retired to Engels- burg (Kalbar). He died on March 19th, 1918 at the age of seventyseven years, four months and two days of (1) Senile Heart, (2) Heart Failure, (3) Exhaustion, and he was buried just behind the home where he retired, in the Kalbar Baptist Cemetery,by the late Pastor Carl Krueger. Eleven children were raised from the marriage and, at the time of his death, one son, Henry Freidrick, had predeceased him. The remainder of their children were still alive. Her parents were Christoph and Christina Wolter (nee Mitz). Her Grandfather was Joachim Wolter. They emigrated from Germany to Australia on October 14th, 1865. Wilhelmine Louisa married Heinrich Moller at the age of nineteen years at Ipswich, Queensland. She was one of eleven children. Johann Christoph Freid- rich (Fred.) Wolter married Louisa Eliza Rieck; Annastasia Ernastine Wolter married Freidrich Lobegeiger; Carl Freidrich Wolter married Freidrickia Wilhelamine Ernastine Rieck; one male and two females are shown as deceased on her father's death certificate. Nothing seems to be known of the remaining four children. Wilhelmine worked beside her husband, Heinrich, and cared for the needs of their children until the time of her death. Two sons, Henry Freidrick and August having predeceased her. Nine children were still alive. She died at Kalbar on December 5th, 1923 at the age of seventyfour years, ten months and twenty days of (1) Incarcerated Inguinal Hernia, (2) Shock. (3) Heart Failure, and was buried behind the home where they had retired, in the Kalbar Baptist Cemetery by the late Rev. Samuel Newell. Cc 4310 DEATH DEATH in the 189% cia Si Sd istrict o! ERECTED ‘By HER 1 OVING CHILDREN. - aes Eree oo AUGUST MOLLER was the eldest of the family of eleven children of Heinrich and Wilhelmine Moller. He was born on 3rd June, 1869 at Mt. Walker. As a child, he lived with his parents at Mt. Walker and Teviotville. In 1892, he married Helene Caroline Albertine Dieckmann and they bought land and farmed at Teviot- ville on the opposite side of the road to where Fred and Hannah later bought and lived. Thetr three eldest children, Hilda, Ernest and Henry, were born at Teviotville. Sometime after 1898, they moved from Teviotville and bought a farm at Templin. It was here that their five other children were born. When they first married, August and Helene, and then the children, attended the Engelsburg (kalbar) Baptist Church but when they moved to Templin, they attended the Boonah Baptist Church as the membership and congregation there was not as big as Kalbar and they felt they were more needed and could contribute more to help establish ‘the work of the Church in Boonah. Life on the farm was not easy for anyone, including the children. Bert tells of an incident that when George was born, Ernest had to walk from Templin to Teviotville to tell Grandfather Moller (Heinrich) that a son was born. This was no short walk and not a road to walk on either. Ernest, who was only eleven years old, had to walk through the scrub and bush, and he was so frightened because all around him the dingoes were howling! Bert was born at home at Templin. He recalls being told that Henry was sent to the neighbour's place to get old Granny Oertel, who was the midwife, to deliver him - no anaesthetic or epidural then. All the family worked together and worked hard on the dairy farm, milking and feeding cows, ploughing, making hay etc. Lena was always a good worker - she used to pick corn with George and Bert and could keep up with the boys, no trouble at all. In spite of hard work, they had happy times together as well as hard times, like when the barn burnt down and they lost all their corn and whatever else was inside. Then there were the times when the possums and wallabies would get into the farm and destroy all the crops. It was times like this when neighbours all worked together and families were brought closer together. As well as helping with the farm chores, Helene always Likedto rear chickens and ducks. You could go there almost any time and see hens and ducks with their brood clucking around together. Helene always saw to it that their family were well cared for, even if their clothes were patched and mended, they were clean and tidy. At the young age of fortynine years, on 7th August, 1918, August passed away, four days later, their youngest child, Phyllis, was born. After the death of their Father, Henry had to take over a lot of responsibility of running the farm and helping care for the family. August was buried in the Kalbar Baptist Cemetery in the grave of his Father. Helene died on 17th January, 1947 and was buried in the Boonah General Cemetery. Like the rest of the Moller family, they worshipped at the Engelsburg (Kalbar) Baptist Church, although it is not that they took any leading position in the Churc! They then purchased a farm at Roadvale and worked very hard on the farm there which, at that time, was just scrub land. It was during a time when Henry was work: ing felling trees, which all had to be done by hand as there was no modern machin- ery available those days and the work was hard and hot, that Henry caught a chill and was seriously ill with fever. His death occured shortly after this on 15th February, 1898 at the Ipswich General Hospital. He died of Typhoid Fever. Four months after his death, th ir second daughter, Henrietta, was born. Enna was then left to care for the two young children which, in thosedays, would have been a struggle for her as there was no such thing as Social Security avail- able to help financially. Her death occured on 26th June, 1953. Henry was buried in the Kalbar Baptist Cemetery and Emma was buried in the Kalbar General Cemetery. The follo wing tribute was written after his death. Our brother fell sick a few weeks before his death with typhoid fever and was taken to the Ipswich Hospital. Reports spoke of his improvement when, on the day of his death, he grew worse in the morning and, sinking very fast, died about 6 o'clock in the evening. His remains were brought home (about thirty miles) the next day and interred in our Church Cemetery at Engelsburg. The large gathering of friends at his burial showed the high esteem in which he was held. We all feel deeply grieved for his young wife and infant daughter. Many were the prayers that went up to Him who has promised to be a Comforter to the widow and a Father to the fatherless. May He bless and comfort them in their sad bereave- ment. Also the parents, brothers and sister of whom there is a large family circle, the departed being the first who broke the ring. Our brother was converted about twelve years ago and baptised on 23rd January, 1886 at Engelsburg and has been in connection with us since, until the day of his death. Blessed are they which die in the Lord. She lived with her parents at Teviotville and walked to and from Teviotville to Coulson to attend school each day. At an early age, she was forced to leave school to help work in the family store. On 20th July, 1904, she was joined in marriage to William Gerhard Windolf of Kalbar. After their marriage, they lived with William's parents, Pastor and Mrs. Windolfm in their home which is still standing today up by the Kalbar General Cemetery. Later on, they moved to the farm which William's brother, Paul, was working but who gave up farming for health reasons. Paul and his family then moved into the house with Pastor and Mrs. Win- dolf while Martha and William worked the farm at Fassifern Station (Silverdale). Martha and William worked hard on the farm as in the early days the land was just a lot of scrub so they had a big job to fell all the timber before beginning to cultivate the land and grow crops. All this work was done by hand, no modern mach- inery in those days. It was here they brought up their family of two daughters and four sons. Martha and William always had an interest in and took part in the work of the Kalbar Baptist Church. With their family, they worshipped regularly each Sunday. William sang in the Church Choir and also became a Church Officer. Later on, two of his sons were to follow in his footsteps. Archie became a deacon of the Kalbar Baptist Church and Henry a deacon of the Tent Hill Baptist Church where he was a member for over fifty years, during which time, he did a lot of lay preaching. Henry's interest also spread to Community needs and he served on the Gatton Shire Council as a Councilor for 22 years. Ma Ch -35- Martha's interest was in the Ladies Guild in the Church. She always Looked for- ward to attending the meetings. She was an excellent cook, her speciality being bread making - she knew how to turn out @ good loaf of bread in spite of no microwave or electric oven, just an old wood stove. She did a lot of knitting, crocheting and dressmaking. Sone times her sister, Johanna, would cone out and stay and together they would sew for the family and things needed for the hone. Martha was a very unselfish and caring person. Vera recalls an incident one christmas Eve, "There had been a heavy storm early that day and @ "swaggie" came to the house looking quite pitiful. He had been camping in the creek somewhere further up and the water came down and took his belongings with it. He had sore feet because his boots had been washed away and he was hungry, with not even a billy can left. Martha, bless her kind heart, asked him in and gave him a good hearty meal at the table on the verandah. She even cut the Christmas cake and gave him a slice. He was touched by her kindness and especially the Christmas cake. He was truly a poor lost soul but a very thankful one." Martha was always helping someone, never turning away anyone who needed help. She gave so much of her time to care for old Granny Koch and many, others. Once hen it was flooding, they took in a whole family for a few days, fed them and let them sleep in the hay shed. She would never turn anyone away. At age sixtyfive, William passed away at his home as a result of a tumour on the brain. In later years, Martha retired in Kalbar, living next door to the old ‘Moller family hone, the farm being taken over by her son, Archie. inen, due to failing health, she was unable to live by herself, she Lived with each of the family for a time until finally she made her home with her son, Harold. She passed avay, having lost her sight and hearing, on 12th July, 1972, at the Boonah District Hospital, of pneumonia and old age. Both William and Martha are buried in the Kalbar General Cemetery. He was born at Fassifern Scrub. with the family and later played the drum in the Church Band. On 16th June, 1907, he was joined in marriage to Ellen Krueg . Their marriage took place at the home of the Bride's parents in Kalbar. After their marriage, they lived in a house near Teviotville Railway Station for a while and then -42- they bought a farm at Charlwood. “Here they raised their’ famfly and lived for about twelve years, selling the farm on March 14th, 1920. John and Ellen always had a keen interest in the Baptist Church and as it was sonetines difficult to travel into Kalbar to attend services, especially over rough dirt roads and in rainy weather, John donated a quarter acre of land for the purpose of building a Church. A building was later erected and a Fellowship commenced. This is the property where the Charlwood Baptist Church still stands today. , In March, 1923, the family moved into a house in Boonah which John had built, his occupation then being a carpenter. During the First World War, John was called up for service but was never sent into action. Ellen was a keen dressmaker and very clever with her hands as she did a lot of crochet and needle work, a talent she has passed on to some of the family. On leaving Boonah, John and Ellen went to live in Brisbane. On April 7th, 1949, Ellen passed away. Later John made his home with their daughter, Doris (Harvey) in Brisbane where he lived until his sudden death on July 1st, 1966. Both John and Ellen are buried in the Boonah General Cenetery. However, I hall proceed to th best of my humble ability. ‘0. be born into a home with Christian parents is a God given privilege, and so it was for Bertha Emily Moller - the ninth of eleven children. Her birth place was Teviotville in the Fi ssifern district. There were ive brothers and Bertha was the fourth of six girls. She went to school in Teviotville which was very close to where her parents had a business. She had difficulty in arithmatic - par- ticularly "subtraction" - over which she was driven nearly to distraction. She did ask God to help her and vividly recalled how, one night in bed, it dawned on her how to subtract! Just an incident, but already she was pointed in the right direction when in need. I think my Mother attended more than one school because she told of how scared the kids were when going through scrub en route to school as aborigines lived in the area. Some of Mother's schooling was interrupted because she was prone to old how, in order to affect a cure, a red hot poker was thrust into a cup of stout and she had to drink the potion. Effective or not, I found this prescription a unique one! naemia. She Because the family was a large one and the male members were farmers, the females did not go out to service but assisted with household chores. A young aboriginal woman was hired to assist with the duties at one stage and was so thorough, she da knife to scrape the corners of the rooms. The family were ached to her, they offered to adopt her but the adoption did not eventuate. so at -49- Mother also told of how scared she used to be at night time and was sure there were Lions roaring in the area. It was a long time later that she worked out that the "Lions roaring" were her brothers snoring!! When an older sister married, she and her husband settled on a farm close by and Mother went to stay with them and lend a hand. One task she assisted with was the "scooping" of a dam, a heavy job indeed. Eventually, at twentytwo years of age, on 10th March, 1909, Bertha was married to a twentyseven year old farm labourer, Johannes Lobegeiger, at Siloam Baptist Church. In time, they moved to Fraser View and, in pioneering fashion, establ ish- ed a home. Four children were born in this period. Dingoes were numerous and on nights when Dad went shooting or fishing, they would howl around the slab house and jump up to the shuttered windows, rattling the wooden pins of what were locks. Snakes were common and one day, Mother drapped an apron of eggs because her little son, Sylvester (Bill), toddling behind, screamed as a snake reared in front of him, He was sure he had been bitten, but further investigation proved it was a “prickle” on his lower anatomy causing his disconfort, In the course of farming and raising a family, Mum and Dad lived at Fraser View, Amberley, Kalbar, One Mile (Ipswich) and back to Kalbar, with Mother quite adept at most farming chores. An eventful uprooting came when, in 1926, we moved as a family to Toowoomba. Shortly after our transition, the Depression was upon us and Dad lost his job at the Foundry and ended up on intermittent relief work. We younger ones were still at school and circumstances necessitated Mother having to do washing to augment, Dad's meagre wages. Those were the days of wood burning coppers and hand wringing. She worked hard and long and already her health was being affected. How I regret my thoughtlessness toward her at this time and the times I hurt her by not realising how tired she was. At all times, attendance at Church and allied meetings were a priority in her life. We children were taken to Church by our parents and encouraged to be regular at Sunday School and Christian Endeavour etc. We owned an organ, Dad had his home made violin and music was enjoyed by all. Nother loved singing and the early evening hours spent on the verandah listening to her singing hymns to the younger ones, nestled in her arms whilst in the rocking chair, is a cherished memory, especially the children's hymn, "Fair is the morning land". Inevitably it happened that family menbers moved away to jobs and marriage took place. Bill (Sylvester) died in 1946 and in 1947, Dad passed away. Two of the family remained at home but Mother's health deteriorated and in June, 1959, she received her “Home call". How we missed her, and still do, yet her influence lingers on as events and time unfold. Compiled by Myrtle Press. -50- BERTHA EMILY MOLLER JOHANNES LOBEGEIGER Their Family: 1. sylvester John 2. Later on, she moved to kalbar with her parents where they purchased a house. Before her marriage, she worked asa domestic for some people in the nearby neighbourhood. (Geibles and Greisbacks.) On July 14th, 1915, she was married to Ferdinand Fredrick Heit at Kalbar by Pastor Carl Krue . There were eight children from the marria After their marriage, they lived with Dad's parents for about four years before purchasing a farm of their own, a portion of Grand- father Heit's farm. Mum and Dad worked as a team all their life. Life on the land was hard with depression, droughts and floods, not that they lived in a flooded area but fered the effects of losing crops etc. Dad, like his Fatt , had many natural talents and when there was not much income from tl till farm, he went out doing carpentery, some of the buildings he built are nding today. During these times, Mum, with the help of the older child- ren, carried on the farm work, each one had chores to do - milking, hay making, corn picking, feeding of owls. The boys learned the art of s, pigs and ploughing with horses at an were the h rly age. Dad also took on road making jobs. Those se and dray days, no modern machinery then! Mum and Dad were both active in Church work and attended the Kalbar Baptist Church. Mum loved to attend the Ladies Guild, many times walking three miles to and From y hurch to attend the meetings. Dad was a Deacon for over thirtyeight rs and Church Treasurer for over thirtyone years. He was made an Elder of the Church in 1967. Mum also helped in providing food and comfort parcels to our boys in the service during the war and in providing goods sent to Mission Stations. @ war years, our relations in ¢ During t any were in a bad way financially and . As a result of this, Mum sent food parcels to them as often as possible and corresponded with them regularly, right hey manag to trace the Moller family hi -59- up to the time of her death. As a family, we may not have had alot of material things but we were always given love and, most important of all, were brought up in the Christian faith, always attending Sunday School and Church, our parents being our example. We had many happy times with Mum playing the organ and Dad the mouth organ- and the family gathered together at night singing hymns and songs. Mum was a good needle woman and cook and won many prizes for cooking, baking and jam making in the local shows. : After a long illness and considerable time spent in hospital, Mum passed away at sixtyfour years of age on November 27th, 1956 at the Boonah District Hosp- ital, having predeceased Dad by eighteen years. He passed away at "Lauriston", Ipswich, on August 3rd, 1974, aged eightyone years. Both are buried in the Kalbar General Cemetery. -o0000-~ ATINA HELENA MOLLER FERDINAND FREDRICK HEIT Their Family: 1. Allan Leslie 2. Olive Thelma 3. Dulcie Burnas 4. Lorna May 5. Selwyn Cecil 6.
