BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD

To accomplish anything in life, it helps if you have some idea of what you want as
the results of your actions. That's called setting a goal - A Great Big Hairy
Audacious Goal. The whole purpose of setting a goal is to plan your life rather
than take life as it comes.

The most important part of goal setting is knowing what it is that you want. Once
you decide what that is, write it down!
After you have written your goal down, keep it somewhere where you can see it
daily. Then you need to start the planning process and figure out the targets along
the way to accomplishing your goal. As you achieve each one, add another.

Sir Edmund Hillary did not get to the top of Mt Everest by taking a stroll. He had
a picture of the mountain on the wall of his New Zealand bedroom. As he looked at
it each day he worked out what he had to do to get to the top.

Begin by setting 20-year targets. List the personal achievements you want to
accomplish. Who and what do you want to be in 20 years? What do you want to own?
Where, and in what kind of housing do you want to live? What are the status symbols
you dream of? What do you want for your family? If you don't know what you want,
how can you expect to get it?

Take a hard look at the future and at yourself. Say, "That's the person I want to
be in 20 years and I'm willing and eager
to pay the price to become that person."

Once you have your 20-year targets sketched out, cut them in half and there are
your ten-year targets. Halve them again for your five-year targets. Do it one more
time for your 30-month targets. Then, set up targets for the next 12 months. Work
on this one carefully. Next, break the list down into months, weeks, and finally,
targets for the coming week and tomorrow. What you do today can have a powerful
impact on all your tomorrows!

Having an intelligent plan is your first step to success. With a plan, you know
where you're going. You'll know what progress you're making. And you'll have a
pretty good idea of when you can expect to arrive. Meticulous planning will enable
everything you do to appear spontaneous to other people.

Your goal can only be reached through the vehicle of a plan. One in which you
fervently believe, and upon which you will vigorously act. There is no other route
to success.

What do you want to achieve or avoid? The answers to these questions are your
objectives. How do you go about achieving your desired results? The answer to this
will be your strategy.
A good plan permits you to frame your life so that at some time in the future fact
and your dreams will meet.

Success or failure is determined on the drawing board.
