Notes
My Puppy theme began many years ago and just like other ideas it was filed in the ideas
drawer, patiently waiting for the wake-up call and the happy sound of the knitting needles
clicking. So 'Hooray at last', here they are - ten adorable easy quick-knits, five boys and five
girls, dressed in fanciful costumes.
The basic puppy measures 21cm [Bt/ain] in height from the soles of the shoes to top of the
head, not including the headwear. Each puppy only requires 40 grams [1t/zoz] of yarn
oddments and the same amount of stuffing. I have used light cream and fawn shades for the
heads, hands and ears, which compliment the colourful puppies'outfits beautifully.
The puppies will no doubt be favourites - amusing playmates

Ordinary pins should not be used as they can
pass into the stuffing between the knitted
stitches.
Tweezers are useful for turning small pieces
right side out and also for inserting small
amounts of stuffing
A red colouring pencil, for shading cheeks.
Black sewing thread, for the mouth stitches

A pair of 3mm [No 11, USA 2].

To work embroidered stitches on a stufled
item it is sometimes necessary to start and
fasten off the yarn ends invisibly lf this is
required, proceed as follows Thread a blunt-
ended needle with yarn required and knot end

Take needle through the stuffed item, passing
il between the knitted sts and bring it out at
the position required Pull the yarn to draw the
knotted end right inside the stuffing. Tug the
yarn to make sure the knot is caught in the
stuffing. Now work the required embroidered
stltches Pass the needle back through the
item to come out at a position between the
knitted sts. Pass needle back through item
again between the same knitted sts to come
out at a different position Repeat until yarn is
securely fastened off, then pull end of yarn
and snip off close to the knitted sts The cut
end will disappear jnside the knitted sts.
Turisted cords
Cut a length of yarn four times as long as the
measurement required Knot one end around
a door knob or hook and knot a loop in the
other end to fit around the index finger of your
right hand.
Now keeping the yarn taut, twist your finger
round and round in a clockwise direction,
steadying the yarn by holding your left hand
cupped around it close to your right hand
Keep twisting until, when relaxed, the strand
of yarn begins to curl tightly back on itself.
Fold cord at centre, bringing ends together
Allow yarn to twist tightly then even out the
twists by stroking the cord along the length.
Knot ends and trim to length
Toy sofety guidelines
A certain amount of common sense should
always be used regarding the safety factor in
children's toys. lt is important to ensure that
the toy you are making is appropriate for the
age group of the child for which it is intended
For example, children under 3 years of age
should not be given toys which have separate
tiny parts, or any small attached pieces which
might be pulled off
The materials used for the designs which
appear in this booklet are: knitting yarn and
polyester stuffing Do not add any other
materials such as wire, pipe cleaners, buttons
or beads Use only new, hygienic washable
stuffing which conforms to current safety
standards - your craft materials supplier will
advise
When sewing up the items always use large
glass-headed or plastic-headed pins. Ordinary
pins should not be used as they can pass into
a stuffed item between the knitted sts. Take
care to sew all the added pieces securely in
place - for example arms, hats etc. lf a yarn
cord is tred in a bow, sew through the bow so
that it can not be undone it pulled.

After working any item from the Basic
lnstructions always refer back to the
puppy you are making to check which item
comes next.
THE MAKING-UP PROCESS
The making-up process should be followed
in the exact order of the instructions, to
avoid any awkward situations in the
sewing Here is an example. Each girl's
skirt is sewn on to the body before the
arms are attached to the body, because it
would be difficult to sew on the skirt if the
arms were in the way
BASIC MA KING-UP:
LEGS, BODY AND HEAD
Join the row ends of body and head, from the
coloured threads to within 4cm lltlzinl of the
B & T sts at top of the head This seam will be
at centre back of the puppy. Gaiher along the
cast on sts of each leg, pull up tightly and
fasten off.
Join the row end of each leg Turn the piece
right side out through top of the head.
Stuff each leg to measure 9 5cm [3s/+in]
around Stuff body to measure 18cm [7in]
around at the 'waist'. Continue stuffing the
neck, then stuff head to measure 21cm
[8t/ain] around at centre. The neck will be
narrower than the body and head at this stage.
Pull up the B & T length of yarn tightly and
fasten off. Now continue stuffing through gap
in the seam, to round off top of the head
Close gap in seam.
To shape the neck, use a length of yarn in the
puppy's head colour. Starting at centre back
seam and leaving a iail end of yarn, gather
around the first knitted row of the head colour,
ending at the back seam with a tail-end of
yarn. Now pull up the gathers very tightly,
knotting the tail-ends. Knot again to secure
the tail-ends, then sew the ends into the neck.
BASIC FACE
Notes: Use black yarn for the eyes and
nose, black sewing thread for the mouth
stitches. When working the embroidered
stitches, start and fasten off the yarn and
thread ends at top of the head where they will
be hidden by the headwear.
Eges
The coloured thread marks centre of the face
Mark the eye positions with pins, in the 12th
knitted row above the head inc row, leaving
2 clear knitted sts to the left and right of the
marked centre.
The eyes are worked in back stitch as follows, Beginning with a P row, st-st 7 rows.
Bring the needle and yarn out at one of the B & T tightly
