Introduction

Greetings,

Congratulations on your interest in learning the

amazing Simple Lo Shu Square! Numerology has
fascinated people for thousands of years, and for
good reason. Every civilization on Earth since the
dawn of recorded time has had some sort of interest
in Numerology woven into their society. From the very
basics such as believing in lucky and unlucky
numbers, to the creation of elaborate systems to
determine the likelihood of future events.

nu·mer·ol·o·gy: n.
The study of the meanings of numbers
and their influence on human life.

We are all influenced by numbers every day of

our life. Our world revolves around numbers. Is there
anyone who has not had, at one time or another, a
strong feeling concerning a particular number? Most
people have a favorite number, and chances are that
yours has influenced an important decision at some
point in your life. We all have lots of numbers that are
intricate parts of our lives, such as our Social Security

1
number, our Driver‟s License number, our telephone
number, etc. The list goes on and on.

There really is no way to deny that numbers

play an important part in our being, and that in many
ways they serve to shape and influence it as well.
Some numbers influence us in large ways and others
in smaller ways. Certain numbers, like those
concerning blood pressure, can actually be a matter
of life and death if we choose to neglect them for too
long!

As you begin to work with the Lo Shu Square,

you will see right off that it deals with what is perhaps
the most important number in a person‟s life – the
number of the very moment of their birth. It is this
number that shapes everything that is to come.

St. Augustine of Hippo (A.D. 354–430) wrote:

"Numbers are the Universal language offered by the
deity to humans as confirmation of the truth."

That may sound like pretty heavy stuff, but

believe me when I say that becoming proficient with
the Lo Shu Square is absolutely within your grasp as
long as you have the interest. While it might sound
like a daunting task to learn the meanings of the
Square, all the numbers that can go inside it, and how
they all relate to each other, the reality of it is much
easier than that, and I will take you through it step by
step. In a very short period of time and by studying
2
the following text, you will be able to provide Lo Shu
Square Numerology readings to your friends and
family that are both entertaining and meaningful.

When learning a new skill, it is useful to have a

highlighter pen nearby while you read. This makes it
easy to highlight important points as you come to
them without having to go back and search for them
later.

One essential thing to remember about using

Numerology is that bringing your own upbeat attitude
and positive energy to the process is the most
important aspect! Our main goal with the Lo Shu
Square is to enlighten AND entertain. So find a
comfortable place to read, open your mind to new
thoughts, and enjoy your journey as we explore the

About the Lo Shu Square

(A Brief History)

Although the exact origins of numerology are

unknown, the art of Chinese numerology has been around
for at least 4,000 years. Chinese literature dating from as
early as 750 BC contains the story of Lo Shu, which
literally translates to "the book of the river Lo".

The story tells of a huge flood that occurred in

China at the time. The mighty King Yu was sitting on the
banks of the river Lo, trying to develop a plan to safely
channel the water out to sea when there emerged from
the water a turtle with a curious pattern on its shell. The
scales of the shell formed a perfect three by three grid of
squares, and within each square were a number of
distinct dots. The sum of the number of dots in each row,
column and diagonal added up to fifteen.

The number 15 was very significant to King Yu

because it was known to be the number of days between
the new moon and the full moon. Additionally, the number
5 was (and still is) highly respected in China, and this
number was located in the important center square of the
grid.

The Lo Shu Square quickly became the basis of

Chinese numerology and is still widely used to this day.
Although the entire system of Chinese numerology is vast
and complicated, the Simple Lo Shu Square is the easiest

4
and most accurate method for understanding what your
numbers mean.

The readings of the numbers have been modified

slightly to better fit with the Western way of thinking. For
example, in Chinese Numerology, the number seven is
the number of sorrow and troubles, whereas in Western
Society the number seven represents good fortune, and is
read as such. Other subtle changes such as this make the
Lo Shu Square even more intuitive and meaningful than
the original. In fact, there are a large number of
numerologists in China and Hong Kong who use this
version rather than the traditional version of Chinese
Numerology due to its simplicity and accuracy.

Depending upon how many of each number a

person has in their grid, you can tell a lot about their
strengths and weaknesses, their character traits and
more. As you become proficient with the use of the Lo
Shu Square, you will have at your disposal a tool that is
both powerful and entertaining. You will be ready, at a
moment‟s notice, to channel the wisdom of the ancient art
of Chinese Numerology!

5
Overview of the Square

Although the thought of learning Chinese

Numerology can sound daunting, the Lo Shu Square is
actually quite simple to master. It is this simplicity that
makes it accuracy even more astounding!

First, let‟s take a look at the square itself:

It is a very basic square made up of nine inner

squares. For those familiar with the game, it looks exactly
like a tic-tac-toe board. This is the shape the Emperor saw
on the turtles back so many years ago, and is the basic
shape used today.

6
The first thing to learn is where to enter numbers
into the square. The square accommodates the numbers
one through nine. We do not use the numeral zero in our
numerology has it has no meaning to us.

Each number has its own assigned square, and

any multiples of that number that occur will always go into
the same assigned square. Starting at the bottom left is
the number one. Then above is two and three. The
number four goes in the bottom square of the middle
column, with five and six in the squares above it working
up. The right column is filled out by finishing the pattern
from bottom to top with the numbers seven, eight and
nine.

So the square assignments look like this:

3 6 9

2 5 8

1 4 7

7
What numbers are you going to enter into the
square? A birthdate of course! This is the most important
number in a person‟s life, and it is the number we use with
the Lo Shu Square to start our profile.

First, write out the birthdate of the person you are

going to do a square for in the following fashion:

For October 27, 1953

Write: 10-27-1953

Next, enter the numbers into the square the way

they are assigned. If there is more than one of the same
number, they all go into the same square with a comma to
separate them. Remember that we do not use the zero.

The square for the birthdate above should look like this:

3 9

2 5

1,1 7

8
As you can see, once you understand the
placement it becomes very quick and easy to place all of
the numbers of a person‟s birthdate into the Lo Shu
Square. This is the layout that will be used to do their
profiling.

Notice that both of the ones went into the same

square. If you had a third number one it would also go into
same square along with the first two number ones. Also
notice again that we did not use the zero.

Please take a few minutes to write out a few

sample squares so that you know how to place the
numbers, and so that you will have something to work
with in the coming sections. You can draw the square out
on anything that you choose, but it might be a good idea
to print out a stack of sheets with a three by three table so
that you have a clean and attractive place to work on.

In the next section we will discuss how to begin

interpreting the numbers that we have placed into the
square. We will first discuss how to interpret what are
called „Arrows‟, and then will move on to interpreting
single and multiple occurrences of each individual
number.

You are now well on your way to mastering the

Simple Lo Shu Square!

9
Reading the “Arrows”

After the birthdate is properly entered into the

square, the first thing to do is to interpret the “arrows” that
are present in the layout of the numbers. An arrow is any
three squares either horizontally, vertically or diagonally
that contains numbers or spaces. This is also called a
“line”.

Here is an example of how to spot arrows:

March 7, 1961 = 3-7-1961

3 6 9

1,1 7

The top row containing the numbers three, six and

nine is an arrow (or „line‟).

Likewise, the middle row containing three blank

squares in a row is an arrow.

10
Remember that arrows can go horizontally,
vertically, or diagonally, and include either three numbers
in a row or three spaces in a row.

Here is an example of a diagonal arrow made up of

three blank spaces rather than three numbers:

January 2, 1946 = 1-2-1946

6 9

1,1 4

Pay no attention to which way the arrow is pointing

in the diagrams, as this is for illustration only and doesn‟t
matter to the reading of the square. We are only
interested in identifying the pattern.

Please take the time now to make sure that you

understand how to spot the arrows in the square once it is
filled out. On the next page we will jump right into how to
interpret them!

11
3

Line of Spirituality – Numbers in 3, 5, 7

This line of numbers indicates a deep sense of

spirituality and a strong faith, although not necessarily
connection to an organized faith but rather one born of the
heart and developed over time. This person may achieve
deep inner serenity.

6 9

2 8

1 4

Line of Skepticism – Spaces in 3, 5, 7

This line of spaces indicates a person of a more

questioning nature, someone who does not always take
things at face value but rather digs to find the truth. Such
a person will take the advice of others with a grain of salt
until they‟ve made up their own mind.

12
9

Line of Determination – Numbers in 1, 5, 9

This line indicates a person of great determination

answer and will continue to work on a problem or project
until it is solved, finished, and put to bed. They take great
pride in their work.

3 6

2 8

4 7

Line of Contemplation – Spaces in 1, 5, 9

This is a rare configuration but can develop in

several ways. These people will usually consider others
before themselves, but will eventually consider how they
will be personally affected by interaction with others. They
also frequently ponder the meaning and ways of their life.

13
3 6 9

Line of Intellect – Numbers in 3, 6, 9

This line shows clarity of thought and typically a

person of above average intelligence. This person may
have a tendency to place logic over feelings and so must
be careful of this behavior so as not to be perceived as
uncaring by others when in fact they likely have a warm
heart.

2 5 8

1 4 7

Line of Memory – Spaces in 3, 6, 9

This is currently a rare line as everyone born in the

th
20 century has a nine in their square. When it does
occur it can indicate a person who is easily distracted.
They need to force themselves to pay attention to detail if
they are to finish the task at hand.
14
2 5 8

Line of Emotional Balance – Numbers in 2, 5, 8

This is one of the more desirable lines. This line

indicates a well-balanced person emotionally and
spiritually. It is someone who is in touch with their feelings
and handles them well. They also typically have a strong
sense of faith. They can convey this sense to others and
so are generally good people to be around.

3 6 9

1 4 7

Line of Heightened Sensitivity – Spaces in 2, 5, 8

This line of spaces indicates someone who can be

easily hurt. They are extra sensitive to the comments of
others. This can often make the person shy and the need
to work to overcome this. On the positive side, these
people are loyal and make excellent instructors.
15
1 4 7

Line of the Practical – Numbers ONLY 1, 4, 7

This line is a person who has a practical, straight

forward view of life and approach to things. They might be
seen as materialistic even though they generally are not.
They are good with their hands and may excel at creative
endeavors such as art, music or writing.

Line of the Planner – Numbers ONLY 1, 2, 3

This is the line of people who like to plan things.

They tend to be very organized in their life and their
possessions. They like to think ahead and they typically
like the comfort of routine. They make good architects or
similar vocations that require attention to detail.

16
6

Line of Self Assurance – Numbers in 4, 5, 6

This indicates a person who has strong confidence

and a high energy level. They throw themselves into
things believing they know the right way to do it and
always want to show others. Sometimes this can make
them seem pushy to people that do not know them well.

3 9

2 8

1 7

Line of Frustration – Spaces in 4, 5, 6

This line is usually of a person who always has a

high set of expectations for themselves and others, and
can get easily frustrated when those expectations are not
met. This person needs to learn over time that progress is
not always as fast as they would like.

17
9

Line of Activity – Numbers ONLY in 7, 8, 9

These people have high energy levels and express

themselves through constant activity. If the line of
Determination also appears, this person could verge on
hyperactivity. These people may also be great at starting
projects but then become easily bored and move on,
leaving others to finish what they have started.

You will notice that in a few places we use the row

or column of numbers but do not use the row or column of
spaces. This is intentional and is part of the system of the
Lo Shu Square.

Please take some time to study the arrows that

may appear in the square. When you are ready, move to
the next section and we will learn how to interpret the
individual numbers that are within the square.

18
Reading the “Numbers”

After you interpret the arrows in a Lo Shu Square

you will move on to interpret the individual numbers. As
we know, there may be multiples of an individual number
within a square, and this changes the meaning. As you
already understand where the numbers fit into the square,
we will not use diagrams for this portion of the instruction.

As you go through the meanings of the individual

numbers, please pay attention to a pattern that develops.
The first occurrence of a number by itself will have a
specific meaning. Most often times, but not always, when
there are two of the same number it will tend to somewhat
reverse the original meaning had there been only one of
that specific number. If there are three occurrences of the
number, it usually, but again not always, amplifies the
original meaning of the single occurrence of the original
number. Four of a single number is rare, but continues to
amplify the original meaning.

If you keep this pattern in mind, it will be much

easier to understand and remember the meanings of the
numbers. In this way you do not have the task of
memorizing each and every configuration of multiple
numbers that can appear. You will become comfortable
with this as time goes by.

19
One 1 –

A person with one 1 is likely a good speaker, but

they can have difficulty expressing their own feelings to
others. Sometimes this will lead to difficulty with others as
they will say what they believe others want to hear.

Two 1’s –

Two 1‟s indicates a balance between being a good

speaker and also being able to honestly express one‟s
own inner feelings. These people have no trouble
revealing their most innermost feelings to others in an
appropriate manner.

Three 1’s –

Three 1‟s in a person‟s square usually indicates

that they are not only a good speaker, but that they are a
„talker‟. They like to speak their mind, and at times can
appear to talk too much without listening to the other
person. These people may need to learn to tone it down a
bit at times.

20
One 2 –

The person with one 2 in their square likely

possess some intuitive powers and heightened sensitivity.
These types trust their own feelings and do well following
them. This person may well on occasion see things before
they happen, like thinking of a friend and suddenly the
phone rings and it is the person they had thought of.

Two 2’s –

Two 2‟s can show a balance between intuition and

sensitivity. People with two 2‟s may be of above average
intelligence. These folks can become quickly frustrated
when other people do not see things that to them are
painfully obvious.

Three 2’s –

Three 2‟s creates an imbalance that may result in

hypersensitivity. This person may be overwhelmed by
their intuition and thereby have trouble expression
themselves due to inner conflicts. A person such as this
needs to learn to be careful how they present themselves.

21
One 3 –

This person is most always someone with a very

good intellect and a strong memory. This is someone who
likely has a pleasant disposition and is able to cope with
life‟s problems without letting it affect their attitude.

Two 3’s –

A person with two 3‟s may have a good intellect

and strong memory, but they tend to be a dreamer and
can waste much time using their gifts in a frivolous
manner. They may need to learn some self-discipline to
stay grounded and use their intellect and memory for
productive purposes.

Three 3’s –

Three 3‟s in a square shows a bit of an overload of

intelligence and imagination. This people are great
thinkers and innovators, but they must be careful not to
get carried away. If this happens, they can have
difficulties developing relationships because they are so
absorbed in what is going on in their own minds.

22
One 4 –

This is the single number of a person who has a

very practical outlook on life. Much like folks with the Line
of the Practical in their square, they have a straight
forward view of life and approach to things. They might be
seen as materialistic even though they generally are not.

Two 4’s –

Someone with two 4‟s may show great

organizational ability, but has a tendency to miss the
practical side of things. At times they can throw caution to
the winds, and they must learn to be careful when
choosing friends, lest they be lead down the wrong path.

Three 4’s –

The presence of three 4‟s shows an exceptional

level of practicality and organizational skills. This person
likely executes tasks in a highly efficient manner and
expects the same of those nearby. They are probably
good with their hands and with numbers, although these
talents are not always fully developed.

23
One 5 –

One 5 is the most desirable number in a Lo Shu

square. A single 5 shows a compassionate understanding
of others a very strong ability to motivate and encourage
other people. This person has a balanced approach to life
and love that is an example to others. They make
excellent family members, spouses, lovers, and teachers.

Two 5’s –

Two 5‟s in a chart shows a person who is so

compassionate and enthused that it can be seen by
others as a bit overbearing and meddling. This person has
a great and loving heart, but must learn to communicate
properly or their energy may be misunderstood.

Three 5’s –

A person with three or more 5‟s in their square has

the potential to take their compassion for life and others to
a whole new level. They have tremendous amounts of
energy and would do well to find outlets that benefit both
themselves and others in the most positive way.

24
One 6 –

This is the number of a very strong creative ability.

Someone with one 6 likely has strong emotional feelings
towards home and family and seeks stability in those
areas. Very often they achieve this mental and emotional
stability in their lives through creative undertakings.

Two 6’s –

While these folks seek stability in the areas of

home and family, they may do so in a manner that comes
across as overprotective. They also may be so involved
with caring for others that they neglect their own
wellbeing. They may need to remind themselves to
actively seek creative outlet throughout their lives.

Three 6’s –

Anyone with three or more 6‟s can easily become

overly concerned with stability and caring for others. Their
gifts are highly developed and they are in tune with the
emotions of others as well as their own. These folks can
produce great self-expression through art, music or writing
if they so choose.

25
One 7 –

People with one 7 in their square usually learn best

through the school of hard knocks. They need to make
their own mistakes. While this makes for a thorough
learning experience and development of common sense,
it can make life tougher than it needs to be.

Two 7’s –

On the other side, two 7‟s is a person who has

more of a tendency to learn from the mistakes of others
and avoid them all together. They are strong observers of
the actions of others and can figure out how to incorporate
positive behaviors they have seen into their own lives
without experiencing the pain themselves.

Three 7’s-

Three or more 7‟s in a square show someone who

may have experienced great personal loss or very hard
times in their past. They likely have built up a great deal of
inner strength from these circumstances, and with that
also a good deal of wisdom and a realistic outlook on life.

26
One 8 –

A single 8 is the number of a very detail oriented

person. They are probably very organized in their life and
their possessions and prefer aspects of their lives to exist
in an orderly and familiar fashion. These people make
great problem solvers and do well is many vocations.

Two 8’s –

The two 8 person is restless by nature, and this

tends to lead to a life that is not as structured or
organized. They may become bored easily if stuck in the
same job or if there is not even challenge in their life to
keep them stimulated mentally and emotionally. They may
have a tendency to mess things up just to experience
change.

Three 8’s –

While these people may seek variety and change

early in life, they quickly start to settle down and become
creatures of habit. They can take this behavior so far that
they get „stuck in a rut‟ and need to be reminded to get out
and live a little!

27
One 9 -

Everybody born in the twentieth century has at

least one 9 in their square. For this reason, a single 9
carries no significance for us. For reference, this is the
number of the humanitarian and it represents our highest
ideal.

Two 9’s -

Two 9‟s in a person‟s square is the sign of above

average intelligence. These people learn quickly and
excel at careers that require thinking. However, they must
be careful not to come off as aloof when speaking to
others whom they perceive as not as intelligent.

Three 9’s –

Someone with three or more 9‟s in their chart has a

very highly developed intelligence. While this will serve
them well to get them through life, they must guard
against becoming socially isolated without realizing it. This
person may need to make a conscious effort to stay
involved and not become locked in their own mind.

28
Doing a Profile

Now that you understand the system, there is

nothing complicated about actually doing a profile for
someone. You can draw the square on a piece of paper or
anything that is handy, or you can print some up yourself
very easily as we mentioned at the beginning.

Once you have the square ready to work with, you

will want to write the persons birth date above it as we did
in the examples. Next, fill in the numbers inside the
appropriate squares. After the square is complete you can
begin the profile reading.

Start off by identifying the arrows in the square.

Show them to the person for whom you are reading. Draw
an arrow through them or circle them if you want to
illustrate what you are referring to, then just tell the person
what each arrow means according to what you have
learned. It‟s that easy.

Next, start reading the individual numbers. Begin

with the square that would contain the 1‟s. If the square
has a 1 (or multiple 1‟s) in it, relate to the person what the
meaning of the number (or numbers) is. If the square is
empty, simply move on to the square that would contain
2‟s. Continue in this fashion until you have covered the
entire Lo Shu Square.

29
A Sample Reading

Here is a sample reading for a random person born on

October 28, 1955.

October 28, 1955 = 10-28-1955

2 5,5 8

1,1

The Arrows

Determination – This person has great determination and

fortitude. They will not long take „no‟ for an answer and
will continue to work on a problem or project until it is
solved, finished, and put to bed. They take great pride in
their work.

Emotional Balance - This line indicates a well-balanced

person emotionally and spiritually. It is someone who is in
touch with their feelings and handles them well. They
have a strong sense of faith and can convey this sense to
others. They are someone that people like to be around.

30
The Numbers

Two 1’s – This person has a strong balance between

being a good speaker and also being able to honestly
express their inner feelings.

One 2 – They likely tend to trust their own feelings and do

well following them. They may well see things before they
happen and possess great foresight.

Two 5’s – At times the owner of this square can become

so compassionate and enthused that they may be seen
by others as being somewhat overbearing and pushy.

One 8 – This is a very detail oriented person. They are

very organized in their life, possessions, and business
dealings. This person is a great problem solver.

One 9 – There is no significance to this.

That is a very short profile strictly by the meanings

as printed. As you practice your own readings they will
become more in depth and you will begin to fill out each
area of discussion with more detail. Even so, you can see
that just this short reading is extremely accurate for the
person whose birth date I used: Bill Gates, the founder of
Microsoft.

Please remember that even though you may be

doing this as entertainment, a profile can become very
personal to the person for whom you are reading. Always
read with compassion and kindness in your heart.

31
A Final Word

Start by doing a few profiles for your friends and

family. Whether you approach this very seriously, or just
as light entertainment, you will find that most people are
quite interested in this type of exercise. That‟s because it
is about them, and is based on the most important
number in their lives. Soon you will be getting requests to
do the Lo Shu Square wherever you go!

In the beginning you may want to keep this book

nearby in case you need to reference the meaning of a
number or arrow. This is not a problem. As a matter of
fact it can be a benefit to show people that this is actually
based on a real life ancient system, and is not something
that you are just making up as you go.

Even if you do approach this as light entertainment

at the start, I guarantee that after working with the Lo Shu
Square for a short time you too will be amazed at the
accuracy of the profiles you will develop. Likewise, your
skill will improve at a very rapid rate.

I wish you the very best of luck and joyful

experiences as you begin your work with the Lo Shu
Square. I have every confidence that you will both enjoy
and succeed!
